Skylar September 2019 perfume subscription review

Skylar Scent Club
4.2 overall rating

Skylar Scent Club is a monthly perfume subscription that includes one limited-edition clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free scent.

The founder, Cat, became especially conscious of product ingredients while working for The Honest Company and quickly realized she couldn't find a truly clean perfume she enjoyed. She also realized tons of other perfume lovers were looking for the same thing, so Skylar was born!

October 2019 Skylar Scent of the Month: Fall Cashmere

skylar booklet in shades of brown and autumnal orange

This is my fourth month of this subscription and I am still SO impressed with the gorgeous packaging. Each rollerball scent "book" lives in a beautiful row on my desk, and I only wish I had signed up earlier so I would have scents 1-3 to complete the collection. Inside the book is a note on the fragrance itself as well as layering recommendations with other Skylar scents.

It's worth noting that Skylar scents are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. They are also made in the US (in Los Angeles, to be exact!) and have no synthetic dyes. If you are someone who is super ingredient-conscious and wants more info, check out the Skylar Dirty List and their perfume philosophy.

Let's check out this month's scent!

Fall Cashmere, 10 ml - Retail Value $29.00 ($20.00 for club members)

Scent Notes: Caramelized Vanilla, Roasted Almond, Spiced Ginger

Ok, full disclosure before we begin. I can't handle "fall" scents. I have never had a Pumpkin Spice Latte and I can't stand when my home smells like cookies or other foodstuffs (that I can't actually eat) so I regift an absurd amount of candles, diffusers, and other items each autumn. I legit feel like I might be the fall version of a grinch.

All that aside, I have subscribed to the Skylar Scent Club for a few months now and I trusted their blends and visions from that first sniff. Even a scent that I didn't think I would like (based solely on the notes) really grew on me and became a cherished addition to my perfume collection. Even so, I was still really pleased that this month didn't appear to be going a PSL route.

My faith was well placed this month, as it has been every single month I have opened a beautiful Skylar Scent Club box. I applied the perfume directly to my wrists without even sniffing first, because the listed notes really excited me! Hot vanilla and a whole lot of cinnamon were the first elements to register, but the scent reminded me much more of a luxurious and slightly exotic spice blend than a cinnamon roll. Give it a few minutes and it transforms into something extra creamy and warm, with a strong almond middle, and the "cinnamon" takes on much more of a bright ginger note. The ginger adds so much sophistication and distinctiveness to this fragrance! I also found also a little bit of musk somewhere in there too, which only adds to how luxe this scent feels after that initial dry-down. The base feels like an assortment of woods (sandalwood??) and resins that really define all of those moody fall feelings and establish this scent as something way more than just a little sexy.

I wore it out to dinner the first night I had it and asked a friend for her opinion since I thought it was a little unusual for me. She said:

I love it. It actually feels exactly like something you would wear. Your perfumes are always a little heady and smell like something that hasn't yet happened before.

Hey, I'll take that! This is absolutely a fragrance I will be wearing all season.

metal rollerball tip

Skylar perfumes usually feel lighter than so many others due to the natural and clean ingredients used to make them. This one has a ton of staying power and great sillage on my skin. It lasted all day! This could be totally different for you, as skin chemistry plays a huge role in these factors.

Verdict: Skylar and I are pretty much going steady these days. I have a lot of love for this brand! I highly recommend this subscription to perfume and clean beauty aficionados. You won't be disappointed. This month's scent is brilliant, warm, creamy, and sultry. Instead of falling to normal fall scent tropes, the Skylar team made something new and exciting, but still totally autumnal. As if the perfume wasn't spectacular enough, the packaging continues to be beautifully done, and opening it feels so, so special. I didn't think it would be possible to top September's scent, but they really delivered another favorite. This is another that I would gladly purchase as an entire full-size bottle (hint hint!!)

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Decided to try this out, mine arrived today. Very pleasantly surprised it’s not the cliche cinnamon sticks, pumpkin spice and chemical apple smells that dominate this time of the year. Actually finding this subtle and yummy without it being too food-y.

I didn’t know you can swap out different fragrances for the monthly offering! It is wonderful that the company gives this option. That said, I think I will try to stay the course, since the subscription typically offers scents that are not available for purchase. I have been eyeing the sampler. It would be fun to try some of the layering suggestions!

I swapped this one out for Willow because the food-y fall scents aren’t my thing. However, I’m excited to read that the scent is still great. That’s always encouraging. This is totally my new favorite sub.

I had concerns too but I knew they did things a little differently. This one took me out of my comfort zone, but I totally love it.

I love this sub, but I swapped out this scent for one of the core scents because I feel the same way about fall/spice/vanilla. I really appreciate that I’m able to do that, as I did the same thing last month. I wish I signed up earlier in the year, since lighter spring and summer scents are my favs. There are a couple of earlier scents I wish I could purchase. I really love Capri and might have to splurge on a big bottle of it.
