My Review of Frank And Oak’s Smart Layering Coat & Jacket

Frank And Oak has new members fill out a quick style profile that captures your sizing, style, and other preferences. (You can update your profile at any time if you want to change things up.)

I’ve only noticed recently that Frank And Oak lets you ask for specific types of items before they put together your options for the month. You can request at least three types of items, like shirts, jeans, or accessories. Frank And Oak will then use that info when putting together your Style Plan picks.

Frank And Oak will email you as soon as your personalized monthly picks are ready. They’ll have pre-selected three items based on your preferences, but you can select other items from your monthly options instead, edit the sizes they’ve picked for you, or deselect items, so that your order fits your budget. (Frank And Oak picks three items for you, but you can order as many or as few as you want.)

The Skye Recycled Wool Coat in Cardamom, Size Medium – Retail Value $269.00, Member Price $235.50

I was sooo excited to see some of Frank And Oak‘s new outerwear items in my picks for the month. They’ve designed a “system” of outerwear that can be mixed, matched, and most importantly, layered up to provide the style and warmth you’re looking for. This wool coat is what they describe as a “top layer.” It’s pretty pricey, even with the Style Plan discount, but I find that most Frank And Oak pieces I get end up being worth the big ticket price. For one, they last. The denim doesn’t get slack after a bunch of wears, they wash unbelievably well (and that’s from someone who isn’t all that careful about their laundry), and the fit stays the same even after months of wear. This coat seems like it’s going to be in a similar boat—the recycled wool (which is cool from a sustainability perspective) is thick, soft, and sturdy. It’s not stiff, but it’s hearty enough that I was getting warmed up just wearing it around my office. The coat also has a silky lining, roomy pockets, a secret inner pocket, and little snap-shut tabs in the wrists and collar for mittens and such.

In short, the coat feels as high-end as the price suggests. Really the only thing I struggled with was the cut, which wasn’t as flattering as it could’ve been on me. I’m already broad through the shoulders and arms, so I’m used to looking a bit like Vince Lombardi in straighter-cut peacoats with boxier shoulders. If I had my way, the arms would be a smidge roomier, the shoulders a little less square, and the silhouette would kick out a bit from the waist down, rather than being more rectangular. I think they’re going for a unisex vibe with the cut, which I honestly love. It’s just that I think that aesthetic best works with narrower or straighter body types than mine. (Something where the coat can hang casually over shoulders in almost an oversized way.) I like the overall design and practicality of the coat too much to be put off by these little fit details, so I’ll hang on to it. But FYI if you’ve got similar shoulders to mine, the coat may hug more than it hangs.

The Skyline Water Repellent Packable Puffer in Black – Retail Value $129.00, Member Price $120.00

This sleek puffer jacket is considered a base layer in Frank And Oak‘s Smart Layering system. Unlike the Skye coat, which had a silhouette that wasn’t 100% ideal for my body type, I was actually pleasantly surprised by how this bomber-style jacket suited me. It’s hard to knock a black jacket, especially one with Thinsulate lining and a ton of secret pockets. Check these out:

This layer feels light as a feather—it’s barely bulkier than a blazer—but it’s surprisingly warm. They offer the same basic style as a sleeveless vest, too, if that’s more your thing.

Okay, let’s put it all together! Wearing the topcoat over the black quilted jacket is definitely warm and cozy, if a bit tight through the shoulders. Of course, I’m wearing a turtleneck under it all, which probably adds to the bulkiness. (I always try coats on with thicker tops, just so I know how the coat will fit with my actual winter wardrobe.)

Verdict:  Frank And Oak Style Plan is a fun way to add to my wardrobe in a sustainable way. (Did you know Frank And Oak just became a Certified B Corporation? They’re taking sustainable fashion seriously.) The looks are high-quality and capture the cool, yet versatile style I like. As for the Smart Layering system? It’s, well, layering. Nothing revolutionary about the concept. But the recycled, cruelty-free materials are a huge plus for me—I love knowing that my coat isn’t just super snuggly, but stylish and earth-friendly to boot. I think the biggest obstacle with the Smart Layering system is that it requires you to purchase multiple pricey pieces. However! Each of the individual items I tried were awesome on their own. (If I had to pick one item, I’d probably go for the longer coat, which is probably the best, most versatile match for the Pennsylvania winter.)

            To Wrap Up:

            1. The long coat is perfect for you and the color is absolutely adorable on you. It is a very flattering piece for you. I hope that you are able to keep it.

            2. I don’t know what you mean about the longer coat not being flattering on you, I think it looks great on you.
