Every month, Birchbox sends samples (and sometimes full-sizes) of new and exciting beauty products from top brands for $15/month. They allow subscribers to pick between a curated box (all samples revealed) or a single sample choice with the rest of the items arriving as a surprise. Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes and is a great way to discover new makeup, hair care, and skincare products without breaking the bank.

This review is of the "After-Party" curated box.

Birchbox October 2019 "After-Party" Curated Box #5 Review

There are two info cards in this month's Birchbox. One details the included six items and has "Trick or Treat" tips on how and when to use certain skincare products. The other card talks about how to get $5 off and a free box for yourself when you buy a gift subscription for the beauty-lover in your life.

thisworks deep sleep pillow spray, 5 ml- Estimated Value $1.93 (Buy a 75 ml full size for $29.00)

I have tried this spray before, though I will admit I have no trouble sleeping. My husband does though, so I like to keep lavender sprays handy in our bedroom for the sheets and pillows. This spray adds a nice relaxing vibe to bedtime.

JUARA Coconut Illipe Hand & Nail Balm, 0.27 oz- Estimated Value $2.16 (Buy a full-size 2.5 oz version for $20.00)

I get my nails done pretty regularly, and one of the things I have tried to become more regular about is cuticle care. Hauling an oil around in my purse is never a good idea, but this balm makes cuticle care on the go a snap. It is a heavier cream with a rich finish and a natural coconut scent. I also found it works wonders for dry elbows!

Wilma Schumann Skin Care Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads, 2 pairs - Estimated Value $7.20 (Buy 5 pairs for $18.00)

These are super common in Birchbox assortments but I absolutely love them so I totally don't care! I like to stash them in the fridge and use them underneath a sheet mask at the end of the day to de-puff and calm down the delicate skin under my eyes. They always leave my under eye area looking refreshed and youthful.

Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $17.85 (Buy the 1 oz for $105.00)

Lactic acid is an anti-aging powerhouse for your skin. This AHA promotes cell turnover, helps fade pigmentation spots, boosts your collagen, and keeps your skin hydrated! If you are looking to keep your skin looking healthy and smooth as you age, you need this in your routine. This Sunday Riley formula is expensive, but I would be shocked if you didn't notice skin improvement by the end of this little tube. If this is a little out of your price range, I recommend trying The Ordinary Lactic Acid formula instead. It has none of the bells and whistles but it is still awesome for exfoliation!

HUM Nutrition Daily Cleanse, 6 ct - Estimated Value $2.50 (Buy a bottle of 60 for $25.00)

This was another repeat for me, and I can't say I saw a huge difference with these. I also am not someone who cares nearly enough about vitamins though! Since this is the sort of product it is hard to comment on in terms of obvious visible differences, here is more info from Birchbox:

When green juice just isn’t enough, HUM Nutrition has us covered. This 100 percent natural supplement detoxifies the body from the inside out, cleansing the liver, bowel, kidneys, lungs, and skin with a potent blend of herbs and minerals. Organic chlorella algae acts like a magnet to attract and filter harmful pathogens while beetroot stimulates blood flow and toxin removal. Other cleansing botanicals include red clover, dandelion root, and milk thistle (to name a few). Natural minerals including zinc and copper work together to boost the immune system and keep skin smooth, soft, and clear.*

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips, 0.1 oz. - Estimated Value $2.90 (Buy a full-size 0.5 oz for $14.50)

Finally, our last item this month is a little tube of cult-favorite Dr. Lipp Nipple Balm! There is only one ingredient in this stuff, and that is medical grade lanolin. Though lanolin is incredible for dry lips, elbows, hands, and more, it is an animal product, so if you are vegan, pass this long to a friend. I personally love this when my lips are super chapped from the cold.

Verdict: This curated Birchbox has an estimated value of around $34.54 which is okay for a $15 box. A lot of these items were repeats, but that can be a good or bad thing depending on if you love the products! I am always happy to get more of those eye pads and another travel-sized tube of one of my favorite basic lip products. The Sunday Riley was another high note, as I use some form of lactic acid religiously in my routine. The cuticle and hand balm was another awesome basic to have close by, and though I was less into the nutritional supplements, the other items made up for them.

To Wrap Up:

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I was so mad when I saw I would be receiving this curated box. I selected the Good Genes as my sample choice and they sent me this curated box. I did not want this curated box. I didn’t choose this box because I had received these products in previous boxes and wanted to try something different. Birchbox will also send you 1-2 sample choice items even if you don’t select one.

4 out 6 samples I received and seen and are far from new. The only saving grace is that there are 10 different boxes to pick from.

I was so annoyed: I had selected the GG as a sample choice and ended up with this curated box. If I had wanted the curated box I would have selected it in the first place! I have one more month of this sub and I’m out. It has been a disappointing year of repeats after repeats.

I wish they wouldn’t put supplements in the boxes. There isn’t enough to see any difference. They usually deter me from selecting a box because I don’t see a point in the sample.

Supplement samples help you see if you like the taste and texture of the supplement. Surely that counts for something?
