Sephora Favorites: Iconic Hair Review

I was drawn to this kit because it was the perfect mix of items I have sampled before and fallen in love with and some new items that I have been hoping to try! There are a lot of the same brands that I sampled in the Hair Holy Grails Summer Essentials Kit but with different products which is always fun! I figured it was a safe bet that I would find some value in this kit. The packaging is quite nice with these rose gold sparkles and the large window, but I'm not sure I'll be able to find a great use for it, so I will probably pass it to my daughter for one of her art creations!

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt, 1.35 oz - Estimated Value $8.59 (Buy the full-size 8.33 oz for $53)

This purifying shampoo smells light and clean and while I have heard of this brand before, I've never actually tried any of their products. The consistency is creamy but slightly coarse thanks to the sea salt and just a little bit was enough to scrub my scalp. I think this little jar will last me a few uses! It left my hair squeaky clean and I mean really squeaky, although it did not feel drying. I will definitely be using as a detox from product build-up!

amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask Mini Size, 2 oz – Retail Value $12

I love amika products and their cute packaging. This nourishing mask is something I've received in boxes before and while I like it, I think of it as more of a conditioner than a mask. There is no strong or lingering smell and it leaves my hair feeling smooth and soft. It is gentle enough to use daily and while it works decently enough in my hair, I don't think it's intense enough to qualify for a mask for me since my hair is on the dryer side.

Moroccanoil Treatment, 0.5 oz – Estimated Value $10 (Buy a 1.7 oz bottle for $34)

This is a popular subscription box product that I have sampled several times before and it's one that always gets used but isn't necessarily something I would go out and purchase. It works well to add some shine and smooth my hair out a bit and it smells nice. It is infused with argan oil and can strengthen, detangle, and even speed up your drying time. If it is a new product for you, this sample size will be plenty big enough to test out before committing to a full size since just a little bit goes a long way!

Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer Mini, 2 oz – Retail Value $13

I received a bottle of this in the Hair Holy Grails Summer Essentials Kit and this is one product that I reach for often! The scent is light and fresh and it can be used on both wet and dry hair. I like using it as a pre-treatment before drying and styling, but I also find myself using it for touch-ups, although I do have to use it sparingly when my hair is dry. This seems to work well to add some shine and make my hair more manageable after washing!

IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm Mini, 1.7 oz – Retail Value $15

This is my favorite product that I received in the Hair Holy Grails Summer Essentials Kit and part of the reason I was drawn to this kit! It is something I use quite frequently and it smells so good with a light tropical coconut scent! I use it on wet hair and it works well for me whether I am wearing my hair natural (which is curly) or blow-dried and straightened. It always manages to add some shine and smooth my hair out. It is very lightweight and can even be used on dry hair to add some volume and texture for a fun tousled look.

Drybar Triple Sec 3-in-1 Finishing Spray, 0.35 oz – Estimated Value $2.17 (Buy the full-size 4.2 oz for $26)

This is a tiny sample, so much so that I'm really not even sure I actually got enough product out to consider myself as having tested it! This is supposed to be an unscented formula, but I found it to have a pretty strong sweet amber smell. I think it provided a little bit of volume in my hair, but it was also mostly air that sprayed out, so that could also have accounted for the lifted look!

Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast Mini, 3 oz – Retail Value $15

This sample size is quite generous and I am glad because it is a fantastic product! It smells amazing, very fresh and sort of woodsy and I was impressed with the volume I achieved. It provided a little bit of texture and was a great product to refresh and volumize my hair throughout the day.

This is my hair after having straightened it the day before and then wearing it up all day as I was out at my daughter's soccer game and running errands in warm, humid weather. I took my hair out of the ponytail and sprayed it in a few spots root to tip and then tousled it slightly. I was impressed with the volume I achieved and thought it did a pretty decent job of revitalizing my hair after a long day!

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo, 1 oz. - Estimated Value $11 (The 1 oz size on Sephora's site comes in a jar instead of a tube, but it looks like this is the same product!)

This is a product that has been showing up on my Instagram feed and I have been so tempted to try it since my scalp gets very dry and itchy in the winter. The consistency is like watery charcoal toothpaste and it even has the strong peppermint smell to go with it. I've never been very impressed with Briogeo products, but I actually like this one! It left my hair feeling squeaky clean, although it didn't lather up enough to really cover my hair without using quite a bit of product. The peppermint smelled so nice and was very soothing to my scalp. I'm excited to have this to try out this winter when my scalp is dry and in need of a little extra love!

DevaCurl Supercream Coconut Curl Styler Mini Size, 3 oz. - Estimated Value $15 (while the mini is listed as being 1.5 oz the photo attached is a 3 oz bottle like the one I received. I think the $15 for a 3 oz makes sense considering the full-size cost of $28 for a 5.1 oz bottle!)

In the Hair Holy Grails Summer Essentials Kit I received the DevaCurl Wave Maker Touchable Texture Whip and I was pretty happy to try it on my daughter and her crazy curls. When I saw that this kit included a different DevaCurl product, I was excited to see how this one would work out for her! This one smells delicious with a light, sweet coconut scent.

I think this one worked even better in her hair! It's a bit thicker in consistency and really did a great job of separating and defining her curls while giving them just enough bounce.

OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil, 0.33 oz - Estimated Value $3.52 (Buy the full-size 3 oz for $32)

I love OUAI products and I actually already have a larger travel size bottle of this, but this cute little bottle will be perfect for my purse! A little bit goes a very long way with this stuff and I actually prefer to use it on my skin instead of my hair since it tends to make my hair look a bit greasy. If I use it on the underneath and the ends of my hair, it does work well to freshen it up a little. I'll use this as more of a perfume and body moisturizer, although I have to admit, this smaller size does not smell as strongly of rose as the larger bottle I have does. Keep that in mind if you're interested in this because I don't think this faint scent is representative of the full-size version!

Kérastase Resistance Blow-Dry Primer for Damaged Hair, 0.68 oz - Estimated Value $4.93 (Buy the full-size 5.1 oz for $37)

This is another brand I have heard of but never tried and I will be using this entire tube because I was so very impressed with it! To start it has this nice grapefruit scent that is strong out of the tube but very light in my hair and it made my hair so smooth and shiny when I blow-dried it.

Here I only have the front sections of my hair dried, but this is simply after using a blow-dryer and a round brush. Normally I have to use a straightener to achieve this level of smoothness and straightness! While I probably won't purchase the full size (I'm trying to be more ingredient-conscious and this contains methylparaben), I will definitely be saving this stuff for special occasions when I want shiny, straight hair!

The Verdict: This kit was the perfect mix of items that I already knew I loved (IGK, Bumble & bumble, OUAI) along with some safe choices (amika, Moroccanoil) and a few new discoveries (Living proof., DevaCurl, Briogeo, Kérastase, Christophe Robin). I'd say it was the perfect kit for me overall. The only real disappointment was the DryBar spray because I really didn't feel like the sample size allowed me to give it a thorough try. I am also a little disappointed that this small bottle of OUAI hair oil smells nothing like the larger version that I already own. Other than that I was able to stock up on some favorites and try a few new things that did amazing things for my hair! I am estimating the total value to be about $110.21 which is just over their promised retail value of $110. I think it was a pretty great kit for $45.95 ($40 + $5.95 shipping)!

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this kit is still available for purchase!

Value Breakdown: This kit cost $45.95 ($40 + $5.95 shipping) and I calculated a total value of $110.21. That means you’re paying approximately the following per item:

  • Cristophe Robin: $3.58
  • amika: $5.00
  • Moroccanoil: $4.17
  • Bumble & bumble: $5.43
  • IGK: $6.25
  • Drybar: $0.90
  • Living proof: $6.25
  • Briogeo Scrub: $4.59
  • DevaCurl: $6.25
  • OUAI: $1.47
  • Kérastase: $2.06

While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Another great DevaCurl product to try for Liv is their gel. I use the light hold one but they also have a strong hold. It isn’t crunchy like most gels, but it really holds them. I used to use this coconut cream until I discovered the gel 🙂

They have Briogeo in there but no Ouai? Briogeo is horrible, particularly when held up against Ouai!

I was tempted to get this set, but I think the price is high for no full size products. Great review tho! cute kiddo! also do not really care for Briogeo! wish we got more amika in sub boxes, it’s my fav!

Thanks, Jennie! 🙂 and a full-size product would have been nice! It would be awesome if they would do the coupon thing like they do for the perfume sample boxes! Then you can redeem for the product you love most! lol

I agree. Cute kiddo! Love her hair! I am not a fan of briogeo. I think the price point is too high.

I actually think Sephora is failing. Their customer service has gotten poor. Their sales are “muh…” There are other stores with better customer service out there. A few of my friends are refusing to shop there due to how they were treated, they are Rogue. But not for the coming year.
