Premium Gentleman’s Box “The Commuter” Fall 2019 Review

We received this coupon for 10% off at North Accent which makes one-of-a-kind watches.

Included in our box was this booklet full of nice color photos that provides information on all of the brands and the products including their retail values. They also highlight the theme for this quarter, “The Commuter,” and it feels like a good fall box! The curator even notes that “fall is leather weather” and our box certainly goes along with this adage. He also reminds us of their recent shift to a focus on quality over quantity. Let’s check it out!

Leather Backpack by Modern Made Man – Listed Value $169.00

Our fall box revolves around this backpack made from premium leather by Modern Made Man. It features padded shoulder straps and is designed to be a versatile minimalist style so you can use it for any occasion. I love the look of this warm light brown bag and I think it has a lot of great features. The leather is smooth and soft and I actually thought it was faux leather at first (I am NOT a leather expert) and I did try to verify the materials by searching for a tag within the bag but could find none. While the outside is sleek and nice-looking, the (nylon?) interior did have a bit of a smell that seemed to dissipate once I unpacked it and let it sit for a while.

This bag features a ton of pockets including a small pocket on the front and two larger compartments for the main section of the bag. The front section features a zippered compartment along with several smaller pockets for organization of pens, cards, and other essentials while the larger back compartment opened up to reveal a large open section and a laptop or tablet pocket with a strap. The strap had two different snap options so you could easily adjust it to accommodate whatever you’re carrying. I was really impressed with the interior layout and was considering stealing this for a diaper bag, but I did have a tiny issue with the front main compartment because of the way the liner was sewn. It kept catching on the zipper, which drove me a bit crazy.

I thought that the bag looked really nice, but my husband claims this isn’t really his style. I think he is definitely in the minority though because I think there are a lot of people who would love this bag’s sleek and versatile style.

Leather Portfolio by Armoir Fashion – Listed Value $69.00

I was really not sure what I would find inside this envelope but was pleasantly surprised to find this rugged, heavy-duty leather portfolio. I much prefer the look of this full grain cyclone cowhide leather, personally, as did my husband. It just suits our style a little bit more. I love that it came with a care card and a nice guide to the layout of our portfolio.

There are multiple pockets and slots for anything you might need; a credit card holder, pen holder, tablet holder, smartphone pocket and a section for any loose leaf papers you might have. It is pretty hefty in weight and I think it would do nicely to protect your items without being too bulky.

Leather Corditos by Andar – Listed Value $18

The last leather item in our box is this set of three corditos in various colors. These are so very simple, but such a stylish way to keep your cords wrapped up and organized! My husband liked these a lot too and while they are small and simple, they seem to be well made from soft full-grain leather. The also provided us with a coupon code for 20% off their site.

3-Close Fold Umbrella by Gentleman Collective – Listed Value $59.00

Our last item comes from Gentleman Collective, a company that donates fifteen percent from your purchase to the Children’s Aid Foundation which funds programs for children in need in Canada. I always love a company that gives back! This umbrella is so classy and pretty fancy for a simple black umbrella! The cover itself is really nice and even features a zipper which makes it feel very official. The handle is this nice sturdy, substantial curve of walnut wood and it opens with the touch of a button. The coolest (and most surprising thing that I happened upon by accident) is that the button also closes the umbrella too! Fancy! Once closed, you just manually slide it down the rest of the way to lock it into place. The frame is made from black coast metal and fiberglass and opens up to a wide 23 inches. This is by far the fanciest umbrella that we have ever owned, and it will be such a classy way to stay dry when my husband heads to work on a rainy day!

Verdict:  This Fall Premium Gentleman’s Box was full of leather items that felt suitable for the season. My husband and I enjoyed the commuter theme and thought all of the items were useful and nicely made.  I think the umbrella was probably his favorite item because it is something that he was in need of and this one was both stylish and high quality. The leather portfolio was probably my favorite and felt like a pretty unique item that isn’t something that everyone has. The little leather corditos were really cool, too. My husband and I both also liked the backpack and how well-organized the interior was. I’m not sure if he will make an exception and use this even though he claims it is not his style (he’s slowly branching out!), but either way, I thought it was a great item to go with our theme and the rest of the box. The total value of this box came to $315 which is great for a $100 box!

  1. Very disappointed with this box. The portfolio is very small and does not fit a legal pad. It is well made, but if it can’t be used for the only thing I am going to use it for, it is garbage. The umbrella handle is rickety. The backpack is not my style. I didn’t mind so much when I got the box, because I really just wanted the portfolio and the umbrella, but those items aren’t great.

  2. The backpack is $129. on their site (and comes in a choice of colors). Maybe it’s a different configuration?

    • Yes, the one on the ModernMadeMan website is pretty different from the one that came in the box!

  3. This box looks nice although I’m skeptical of the relatively low retail value of the backpack. In my non-expert opinion, an item with so much “premium” leather would have a much higher RV. Also, what do they mean by “premium” anyway? That’s a very vague term…

Although all items seem useful (I do miss the silk tie and hanky), the questionable leather (to me, at least) and the gimmicky subscription process make me stay away from this sub.

  4. This is a great box. Thanks for all the pictures.

    • Thanks for reading, Zo! 🙂
