Brown Sugar Box August 2019 “The Boss Women Edition” Review
Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini magazine that highlights the theme of the box, lists the products included and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box has everything you need to boss up and get work done!
This article describes the theme of the box and lists all the items included in this month’s box. The next article highlights five work outfits that are fun, fresh, and fashionable.
Up next are four podcasts that every black professional need in her life. I plan to check out the “Yes, Girl” podcast from Essence. The next article speaks to the importance of being able to embrace your natural hair in the workplace. Luckily, I live in Atlanta and get to be surrounded by beautiful naturalistas like myself every day.
It’s Okay to Take a Break spoke to me on a personal level. I used to use all my PTO! Lately, I’ve accrued way more than usual which is evidence that I’m not taking enough personal time off. The next spread features Brown Sugar Beauties rocking items from last month’s box.
This boss women playlist has all female artists, empowering lyrics, and uplifting beats perfect for motivating you to push forward, boss up and be great. The magazine also provides answers to the most frequently asked questions. On the back cover is an invitation to join Izzy and Liv in their members-only lounge on Facebook.
Build My Empire T-Shirt – Listed Value $28
This is the perfect T-shirt for a day of handling business. I love the colors and the inspiration to keep building.
Izzy & Liv “Vibranium” Thermos – Listed Value $15
Hard work requires hydration! This thermos keeps hot and colds drinks at the perfect temperature. This is a remix of the first Brown Sugar thermos which was hugely popular. Subscribers, impressed at its ability to keep cold drinks cold for a surprisingly long time, started speculating that the thermos was made with vibranium – the fictional metal from the movie Black Panther. I like this thermos, but I hate the heavy branding. The Izzy & Liv label is almost as large as the quote itself!
Like a Boss File Folder Set – Listed Value $10
Daily, I’m challenged with getting and staying organized which is key to making sure you’re taking care of business. These file folders can help you get organized. I like the cute designs. It’s a big upgrade from my plain manila folders.
Say It Loud Letter Board – Listed Value $18
Letterboards are super popular right now. I like the concept but keeping up with all those little letters and deciding what to put on the board sounds like a lot of work. Also, the letters are supposed to be pre-cut, but I had a difficult time removing the letters without scissors. I also couldn’t help but want to remove all the extra plastic from the letters. This is going to be a hard pass for me – too much work!
Minding My Business Desk Plaque – Listed Value $12
This is my favorite item in this month’s box. I love the play on words and the fact that I am both handling business at work and also trying my best to mind my own business! This plaque will serve as a reminder to stay away from office politics!
Brown Sugar Lunch Tote – Listed Value $15
Another remix to a popular Izzy & Liv item, this lunch bag made of 100% neoprene, and features beautiful and strong black women. I loved my last lunch bag and got so many compliments. When it went missing, I was sure someone swiped it. I found it months later after my failed attempt to organize the kitchen! I’m happy to add this lunch bag to my collection.
The Verdict: I’ve been a Brown Sugar Box subscriber from the very beginning, so I’ve seen every box. It’s no secret that it’s one of my favorites and a brand with a mission that I love to support.
As a boss, I totally connect with this month’s theme! Apart from the letterboard, I liked all the items in the box. I love the remix on the thermos and lunch totes. I think it’s a unique way to bring back popular items in a new way. The desk plaque and the It’s Okay to Take a Break article from the mini magazine were my favorites this month.
I have two minor critiques. (1) I see a lot of heavy branding on this month’s items and I hope we aren’t trending in that direction again. At one time, this was my biggest complaint. (2) A boss women box with no stationery or pin? I felt like these items were missing from an otherwise well-curated box.
Overall, Izzy & Liv rocked this month and offered a fun mix of items! What will they have in store for us next month?
