Jeffree Star Summer Mini Mystery Box Review
Velour Liquid Lipstick in Self Control – Retail Value $18
Self Control is matte lilac purple that was a part of the Limited Edition Love Sick collection. I was able to find this for sale from Beautylish, but as a whole this is a shade that is no longer available. I was a bit bummed to see this shade- while with mystery boxes you know it’s luck, especially with someone who loves bright and outlandish colors like those offered by Jeffree Star, this definitely isn’t a shade I can reach for today. I will say though, it looked better on me than I thought! Lilac will never be an everyday shade for me, but I could definitely see myself wearing this when I am participating in Mardi Gras festivities or cheering on LSU.
Here I am wearing Self Control.
Velour Liquid Lipstick in Yummy – Retail Value $18
According to what I can see online, this was from the 2018 Summer collection. Yummy is a burnt orange with muted glitter, and while I never really thought myself to be an orange lipstick person, I am surprisingly in love with how it looks on. This mystery box was my first chance to try the (mega-popular) Velour Liquid Lipstick line, and I can see why they are loved by many. I prepped my lips with a good lip mask, and then both lipsticks glided on smoothly with no feathering. They were transfer-proof until I started eating oily foods (which will break down almost every liquid lipstick), and I thought they were pretty comfortable, too.
Here I am wearing Yummy.
And here are the shades swatched on my arm.
Jeffree Star Cosmetics PopSocket – Estimated Value $14
PopSockets are no longer available for sale on the Jeffree Star Cosmetics website, but there are many people reselling them on platforms like Poshmark, Mercari, etc. for varying prices. In order for this item to meet the promised $50 value of the box, I estimated its cost to be about $14, which is a lot for a PopSocket. This was my “exclusive mystery box item,” though I think the bigger mystery boxes actually received a custom mystery box shade. I am not one to have a neon orange pop socket on my phone, but I have multiple friends who would be happy to have this so I will pass it along.
The Verdict: This was my first chance to try the Jeffree Star Cosmetics line, and while initially I was disappointed to pull out a purple and orange lipstick, the colors are starting to grow on me. Plus, I definitely appreciate being able to try these products at a discount, and I can see why the liquid lipsticks are so popular. The value of the two liquid lipsticks added up to $36, so the PopSocket would need to have a $14 value to meet the promised $50 value. That being said, I would still try my luck with his next mystery box!
To Wrap Up:
Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, this is now sold out. Mystery boxes are offered a few times a year, so stay tuned for the round!
Value Breakdown: This box cost $25.95 ($20 + $5.95 shipping) and I calculated an estimated total value of $50. That means you’re paying approximately the following per item:
- Self Control: $9.34
- Yummy: $9.34
- PopSocket: $7.26
