Birchbox The Keep Your Curls Kit Review

Birchbox Curl info

Here is the info sheet for the products included.

Birchbox Curl rene

Rene Furterer Style Vegetal Sculpting Gel, 0.5 oz - Estimated Value $2.60 (Buy the full-size 5 fl oz for $26)

This gel isn't specifically for curly hair, and it has a strong hold that leaves a bit of a crunchy finish. It also has denatured alcohol near the top of the ingredients list, so ultimately this is a miss for me.

Birchbox Curl bb

Bumble and bumble. Curl Defining Creme, 2 oz - Retail Value $16

I've tried this before and it is definitely a product I need to use in conjunction with another one- it leaves my hair soft and shiny, but on its own it doesn't provide the hold to keep my curls defined and springy. This paired well with both gels included in this kit, however, and I liked the light floral scent.

Birchbox Curl amika

amika Nice Cream Cleansing Conditioner, 2 oz - Retail Value $10

I'm definitely team cleansing conditioners all the way for curly hair- I actually own the full-size version of this. I picked it up during the Sephora Memorial Day sale when it was discounted even though I had never tried it before, and I am glad I did. I love it, so having this smaller size will be perfect for traveling. It does a great job of helping my hair to feel clean without being stripped, and it provides great slip for combing through my hair.

Birchbox Curl moroccanoil

Moroccanoil® Treatment Original, 0.34 oz - Estimated Value $6.80 (Buy the 1.7 oz version for $34)

I love when I receive products in subscription boxes that I have purchased before- this argan oil treatment is one of them! This definitely adds softness and shine to my hair, and it doesn’t make my hair greasy, either.

Birchbox Curl briogeeo

Briogeo Curl Charisma™ Rice Amino + Quinoa Frizz Control Gel, 0.75 oz – Estimated Value $2.73 (Buy the full-size 5.5 oz for $20)

Unlike the other gel in this kit, this doesn't leave my hair crunchy, making it perfect to fight this southern humidity I am facing! I used a little bit distributed through the ends of my hair before scrunching my curls and air-drying, and I was happy with the end result.

Birchbox Curl shampoo

R+Co BEL AIR Smoothing Shampoo, 2 oz - Retail Value $14

My curls are a harsh critic of shampoos and this one didn't make the cut. It was a little too stripping for my hair so it was left feeling a touch dry, which is the main thing I try to avoid when washing my hair

Birchbox Curl conditioner

R+Co BEL AIR Smoothing Conditioner, 2 oz - Retail Value $14

This conditioner was better than the shampoo, but I won't be reaching for it regularly. It did an okay job of adding moisture back to my curls after using the shampoo, but ultimately my hair still was left bit dry. This did help with frizz though, so if you have an oilier scalp this duo may be perfect for you.

Birchbox Curl oribe

Oribe Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler, 20 mL – Estimated Value $3.03 (Buy a full-size 8.5 oz for $38)

I love a good leave-in conditioner- they help to keep my curls from tangling when they are dry so that I don’t have a ton of knots the next time I shower. This leave-in has that great Oribe scent (I don’t recommend this brand if scented hair products bother you), and this definitely made combing through damp curls easier and helped to prevent tangles once my hair dried. If I ever run out of haircare samples, this would be my top choice for a full-sized leave-in conditioner.

Birchbox Curl curl keeper

Curl Keeper by Curly Hair Solutions™ Leave-In Conditioner, 1 oz - Estimated Value $2.25 (Buy the 8 oz version for $18)

I am always happy to see Curl Keeper products- they're affordable, but I always get good results when using them. This leave-in conditioner is no exception, and it has a balmier texture compared to the Oribe, which is more fluid. This definitely helped to cut down on frizz, and a little bit went a long way.

Birchbox Curl comb

Birchbox Wide Tooth Comb

This wide tooth comb does the job, is comfortable to hold while I am fighting tangles, and comes in a pretty blue color. That is really all I need from a comb.

The Verdict: I love kits like this that include exclusively curl products- it can be hard to find samples of products that work for curly hair, and I appreciate this well-curated assortment. Several of the products were travel-sized, too, which makes this kit feel like it has more of a value. However, value-wise, Birchbox promised a total value of $94, and by my math, they did come up short with a total value of $71.41. That total doesn't include the value of the comb, but I think it is safe to assume the comb doesn't have a $22+ value. I still recommend this kit if you have curly hair, but I wish Birchbox would be a bit more accurate in their value estimations.

So many of these products are loaded with silicones or I’d consider purchasing.

I’m always interested in trying new products for my curls even though I do already have some favorites that wok pretty well. I’m confused by the smoothing shampoo & conditioner though…aren’t smoothing products intended for straight (aka smooth) hair?

I thought the same thing. Maybe smoothing frizz from curls? But I thought of straightening myself lol
