Skylar July 2019 perfume subscription review

Skylar Scent Club
4.2 overall rating

Skylar Scent Club is a monthly perfume subscription that includes one limited-edition clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free scent.

The founder, Cat, became especially conscious of product ingredients while working for The Honest Company and quickly realized she couldn't find a truly clean perfume she enjoyed. She also realized tons of other perfume lovers were looking for the same thing, so Skylar was born!

Skylar July Scent of the Month: Salt Air

open skylar book, featuring bookmark on top of perfume roller

First off, the packaging is gorgeous. Each month the rollerball comes in a little scent "book" complete with a bookmark you can store inside with space to jot down your thoughts about each fragrance. I actually keep a little scent journal with notes on perfumes that I try and this speaks directly to my inner perfume geek.

I tend to hoard perfume, and I will freely admit that many of mine are probably not super "clean". I honestly can't say I have spent too much time thinking about the ingredients that I spray on my neck each morning... maybe I should?

Skylar scents are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. They are also made in the US (in Los Angeles, to be exact!) and have no synthetic dyes. If you are someone who is super ingredient conscious and want more info, check out the Skylar Dirty List and their perfume philosophy. I am personally really curious about the quality and scent of such clean perfume.

Let's check out this month's scent!

Salt Air, 10 ml - Retail Value $29.00 ($20.00 for club members)

Scent Notes: Driftwood, Sea Salt, Seaweed.

This is a rather sophisticated sea-themed scent that I liked immediately. The first thing that hit my nose after the dry down was a beautiful blend of sea greens, water, and salt. I absolutely adore "salty" scents but authentic ones can be hard to come by! The woods really don't begin to make an appearance until 10-15 minutes have passed (at least on my skin) but they balance out the more aquatic notes quite beautifully and give this oceanic scent a layer of complexity that I wasn't expecting. This scent reminds me much more of summer on the New England coast than something more tropical, and as someone who lived for years in Boston, this suits me just fine and is even bordering on nostalgic.

It is also worth noting that when you first apply this scent, you will likely smell the carrier alcohol if you sniff right away. I promise all of that will disappear as soon as a few seconds pass and it dries. Organic sugar cane alcohol is a healthy alternative to other commonly used carriers but it can sometimes cause a scent to smell a little sharper than some more traditional perfumes in those first few moments.

I also want to say that I found this scent to be significantly lighter than some of my others. This is because Skylar doesn't use many of the chemicals (like phthalates) that give traditional perfumes that super strong presence and longevity. I still found this scent to stick around for almost 4 hours on my wrists and even longer in my hair. This might be longer or shorter on your skin.

Verdict: As someone who loves perfumes, this subscription was an obvious win for me. The fact that the limited-edition scents arrive in such pretty packaging was an added bonus, as I am someone who expects her perfumes to look as good as they smell. I am admittedly much less ingredient conscious than I should be, and while I will still wear my old favorites, it is reassuring to know that if I ever do go totally clean, Skylar has me covered with unique and lovely options. I am happy to add their beautiful fragrances to my growing collection and I really look forward to next months scent.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Is this an easy sub to cancel if and when I decide I no longer want to continue? Thank you

I got a Skylar scent in the Sephora Clean Fragrance sampler and I love it! Unique yet still complex which I prefer and often find lacking in Indie and start up fragrance brands. This sub looks very intriguing.

Hi Rosanne,

I just re-tested the coupon code and it worked for me. Maybe try typing it in instead of copy + pasting? Or a different browser? Sorry!

I’ve been subbed to Skylar since last month, and I so regret now signing up sooner when I first heard about it when they launched. Last month’s scent was sooo beautiful, and I was just charged for my July perfume today, so hopefully I’ll be getting it soon! I also love Salt Air types of perfumes, so I already know I’m going to love this one. 🙂

I am really super excited to see how the scents change as the seasons do. I got a chance to smell Junes and it was so beachy and delightful! Then July is literally a breath of fresh air!
