Sephora Favorites: Clean Makeup Kit Review – July 2019

Sephora Favorites Clean Makeup Kit Review- July 2019

Sephora releases new “Favorites Kits” all the time and the most recent one to catch my attention is the Clean Makeup Kit. Over the past year or two, I’ve gotten increasingly interested in changing over all of my beauty products to non-toxic so this kit is the perfect way to test out a few brands.

FYI – this Sephora Kit is still available for purchase here!

Sephora Favorites: Clean Makeup Kit Review

Everything in the kit comes in a sturdy little box (that you can keep and reuse) with a plastic insert that securely holds each item. I can appreciate the absence of a separate info card as they’ve just captured all of the needed info on the back of the box.

Bite Beauty Multistick in Cashew, 0.07 oz. – Estimated Retail Value $10.61 (Buy a full-size 0.17 oz. for $24.00)

Oh wow- I simply LOVE this! This reddish-brown multi stick can be used on cheeks, lips, and eyes or anywhere you want some soft color. I’ve been using it almost exclusively as an eyeshadow and it’s so velvety and wonderful. It’s a little hard to see with my eyes open on camera, so I photographed it with them closed. Just a hint of color to elevate my eyes a bit. I dab the stick right onto my lids then use my fingers to blend it out. It’s a little weird at first but I got the hang of it pretty quick.

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara Mini in After Midnight, 0.1 oz. Sample Size – Retail Value $13.00

I didn’t have a lot of expectations going into this mascara since my previous experience with natural mascaras have been gentle and not as bold, but this really impressed me right off the bat. The pigment is dark, and the wand (which has round bristles but also a sort of comb on one side) really delivers a plentiful amount of product that really makes my lashes look longer and more voluminous. This baby packs a big punch in a small package.

ILIA True Skin Radiant Priming Serum, 0.15 oz. – Estimated Retail Value $7.80 (Buy a full-size 1 oz.  bottle for $52.00)

I really would have preferred another more makeup-y item in the kit than this “serum” but I suppose it’s supposed to pull a double-duty as a primer as well. I put a few drops of this clear pleasant-smelling serum onto my face in a thin layer after cleansing and it left me feeling slightly sticky- like I sometimes do after using a sheet mask. Perhaps it’s meant to feel this way to allow the makeup to sort of adhere to it, but I wasn’t a huge fan. Maybe I just am not familiar enough with primers?

ILIA True Skin Serum Foundation, 3 Samples, 0.06 oz. Total – Estimated Retail Value $3.24 (Buy a full-size 1 oz. bottle for $54.00)

At first, I was all “bleh- foil packet samples” but then I realized: how else am I supposed to test out foundations? The sample pack I received lists all of the shades on the back but came with three called “Tavarua (SF 2), Chios (SF 6), and Maraca (SF 9).” As you can see by the swatch, the palest one (Tavarua) matched my hand the best so I went with that one (although I realize my face is probably slightly different). I got one full face-worth out of the sample and was impressed by how light it was even though it gave me pretty good coverage. I like knowing there is a clean brand I can turn to once I run out of my current and now discontinued BB cream.

Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer, 0.23 oz. – Estimated Retail Value $ 11.96 (Buy a full-size 0.5 oz. bottle for $26.00)

I’ve been wild about highlighters for some time now. Powders, sticks, liquids- give all of it to me! This illuminizer has a gorgeous amount of shimmer to it that when used sparingly makes a fantastic highlighter. It can also be mixed with foundation or moisturizer to give your skin an all-over glow. A little of this goes a long way so this sample size is just perfect. See it swatched on my hand below.

LAWLESS Seal the Deal Loose Setting Powder in Classic Translucent, 0.35 oz. – Estimated Retail Value $13.23 (Buy a full-size 1.05 oz. for $36.00)

I used to use setting powder a lot more than I do now. These days I prefer a dewier look and will use a spray to set my makeup. This petite loose powder is a nice size for travel and has a pale creamy beige tone to it. It gets rid of any shine that you may be trying to avoid and gives the skin a soft matte finish with a light dusting of a brush. This may be especially good for those who want to keep the glistening look to a minimum throughout the day during these steamy humid months.

rms beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick in Temptation, 0.04 oz. – Estimated Retail Value $7.47 (Buy a full-size 0.15 oz. tube for $28.00)

This is quite a bit darker on that it appears on the website but still a very nice deep reddish mauve/rose shade. The formula is extremely creamy and it glides on effortlessly. For some reason, I’m not loving this color on me, so I’ll be passing it on to Megan who likes the satin finishes more than I do.

Swatches for multistick, luminizer, and lipstick on Marne's hand

Here are hand swatches for the Bite multi stick, Josie Maran highlighter, and rms beauty lipstick.

The Verdict: The latest Sephora Favorites Clean Makeup Kit is a great way to try popular clean beauty brands without having to spend a ton. Out of the seven items, I really loved a solid four of them (mascara, multi stick, illuminizer, and foundation), with the setting powder still being great even though I prefer a dewier look. The ILIA serum and rms lipstick color weren’t my faves but I was happy to try the lipstick formula since I’ve been curious about the brand. All in all- this is pretty unbeatable for $28 and had a value of about $67.31.

  1. I just ordered this kit and check this $59 palette that’s now down to $38. Too Faced
    Natural Lust Palette
    ITEM 2192920
    Price: $38.35 $38.35

So I ended up reaching free shipping but used my 50 play points and got 4 free extras. I’m glad I saw this. Thanks great review.

  2. Currently on sale for $14!

  3. Thank you for the review! I actually received the Ilia Voxbox from Influenster about three weeks ago with all full size products that included the True Skin Serum Foundation, True Skin Serum Liquid Highlighter in Nova, True Skin Concealer, and the Mini Mascara same as you in this review. I loved all of the products, and the mascara was surprisingly one of my favs! I fell in love with the wand and as for the foundation, concealer, and liquid highlight, I was really impressed too! I love the light feeling, yet great coverage. Also, I love the clean ingredients list and they are all great for summer.

  4. I returned this set. The sizes are too tiny and that foundation sample is a joke.

  5. Geez! that shade range on the foundation is tiny!

Love that Bite Mulitstick on you! perfect easy summer makeup!
