Brown Sugar Box “Home Refresh Edition” Review
Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini magazine that highlights the theme of the box, list the products included and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box is all about making your home a sanctuary for peace and relaxation.
The warmer sunny weather is here so now is also a good time to switch up your hair and skin routine. This article offers great tips like hydrating and exfoliating your skin and getting a good hair trim. The next article provides tips for planning a top-notch staycation.
Izzy and Liv will be at this year’s Essence Fest. This is less of an article and more of an ad highlighting Izzy and Liv tees that can be worn at the festival. Included is last month’s Clique t-shirt with a 40% off discount code for subscribers. Brown Sugar Babes are invited to share pictures of themselves on social media for a chance to win a free box. Highlighted are pictures from last month’s box.
Finally, there’s an awesome “Don’t Kill My Vibe” playlist with all the hits! There’s also a page with Brown Sugar Box FAQs.
The back cover of the magazine has a picture of a beautiful black woman in a field of purple flowers and invites you to join the Izzy & Liv members-only lounge on Facebook.
“Sweatpants, Hair Tied, Chillin’” Tee – Listed Retail Value $28
In the song Best I Ever Had, Drake proclaimed that his girlfriend is the prettiest when she has on sweatpants, hair tied, chillin’ with no make-up on. I see Izzy and Liv has a thing for turning lyrics into t-shirts! I do like the sentiment, color, and lettering on this t-shirt. It’s super cute, soft, and relaxing.
Wall Tapestry/ Lightweight Throw, 71” x 71” – Listed Retail Value $30
This large 71”x71” wall tapestry or lightweight throw features one of four dope illustrations seeping with Black Girl Magic. It can be hung on the wall to freshen up your décor or thrown across the loveseat and used as a light blanket. The material is thin and stretchy. It’s an odd choice, in my opinion, for a throw or tapestry. It feels more like a dress and in fact, many of the Brown Sugar Babes have turned them into wrap dresses! I received the tapestry of the gorgeous sister with the amazing afro. I love the colors and geometric patterns.
Versatile Satin-Lined Turban – Listed Retail Value $18
I feel like satin-lined hair coverings is a black girl essential! This turban is already pre-tied and structured in such a way that it’s very easy to put on. The satin-lining keeps hair protected and frizz free. It comes in four colors and I got the black turban. It’s comfortable and cute and one of the few hair coverings I would wear outside the house.
Pose Candle Co. Incense Sticks with Holder, Amber – Retail Value $12
Posh Candle Co. is known for its fragrant candles and is a subscription box fave. I was excited to see another product from this company – these incense sticks and wooden holder. The incenses are vegan, hand-dipped and come in a resealable bag. There are three scents and I received the Amber. I usually don’t like incenses because the fragrance is so strong but this Amber scent isn’t overwhelming and smells good.
Brown Sugar Babe Pillow Cover, set of 2 – Listed Retail Value $25
I’m always swapping out my pillow covers. It’s a quick way to change up the vibe and move your décor from season to season. Included in this month’s box is two of four available designs. I received the Brown Sugar Babe with the faux locs and the one with the braided bun. The pillows have a silky soft texture and the material is thin. However, it’s sturdy and opaque which is great. There is a tiny zipper encloser. For some reason, the zipper doesn’t run the full length of the pillow so I ended up stretching the seams of the pillow trying to get my fluffy West Elm pillow inserts inside. Aside from this design flaw, these pillows are nice with a bold pop of color.
The Verdict: I’ve been a Brown Sugar Box subscriber from the very beginning so I’ve seen every box. It’s no secret that it’s one of my favorites and a brand with a mission that I love to support. I love the theme and all the items included in this month’s box.
This “Home Refresh” theme is dope! I really like it and it’s unique compared to other Brown Sugar Box themes. There were fewer items than usual in this month’s box but everything that was included was nicely done. My favorite items are the t-shirt and turban but honestly, I liked all of the products. They are all well made aside from the short zipper on the pillowcases. Another thing I noticed, that many may have overlooked, was the design and layout of the magazine. It really was designed well and I especially love the layout for the article “5 Way To Make Your Home Brand New.”
For me, this box would rank among the best for 2019! I haven’t received a Brown Sugar Box in a while where I like and could see myself using every item. Looking forward, there was another vendor delay with next month’s box so those are expecting to ship a little later than usual. I hope it’s worth the wait!
