This card details the items in the box and provides some tips on how to use them. Now, on to the items!

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 lip gloss

MAC Cosmetics Lipglass in PRRR, .08 oz – Estimated Value $14 (Buy a .1 oz full size $17.50)

I don’t have a lot of exposure to MAC products, so I tend to be pretty excited to get something from them in a subscription box. This lipglass is really nice, and almost the full-size, too. It doesn’t feel sticky on my lips, and the color is a pretty warm, peachy pink with a high shine finish. The color is light and subtle and I feel like the peachy sheen just brightens my complexion and finishes my makeup look nicely for the day.

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 acne patch

Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Invisible+, 6 patches – Estimated Value $2.77 (Buy a 39 patch full-size box for $17.99)

These patches are interesting – they’re soft little discs that go over acne (works best on whiteheads) and helps heal them! I tried on one overnight and it was really weird but cool how it turned white like it drew out and absorbed the stuff blocking the pore.

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 dr jart

Dr. Jart+ V7 Priming Moisturizer, .16 fl oz – Estimated Value $4.54 (Buy a 1.69 fl oz full size for $48)

This moisturizer is vitamin-packed and helps to brighten, hydrate, and protect your skin. It also works to mattify your complexion and as a primer to help your makeup apply and wear better.

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 purlisse

Pūrlisse Coconut Oil + Coffee Sugar Body Scrub, .7 oz – Estimated Value $4.20 (Buy a 6 oz full-size for $36)

Have you tried the bulletproof coffee trend where people put butter or coconut oil in their coffee? That’s what this scrub smells like. It has coconut oil, coffee, sugar cane, fruit extracts, and other seeds and oils. Just rub this all over in the shower and rinse – it helped me wake up and I loved the smell of the coconut and coffee together.

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 alterna hair

Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Restructuring Bond Repair Leave-In Heat Protection Spray, .85 fl oz – Estimated Value $6.48 (Buy a 4.2 oz full size for $32)

This leave-in heat protection spray from Alterna helps strengthen, protect, and repair your hair. I’ve been using this for the last few washes and I really like it! My hair definitely feels a little stronger and healthier after styling.

LARITZY Pressed Blush in Forbid, .1 oz (Full Size!) – Retail Value: $24

I’m torn between the lip gloss and this blush for my favorite item this month! This blush goes so well with the gloss. The formula is very pigmented, so a little goes a long way. I found it was best to use a light hand when applying to blend it right. It has a matte finish, too. I did find it a smidge powdery but nothing too bad as long as you tap off excess before applying to your skin.

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 swatches

Here are the swatches of the lip gloss and the blush. You see what I mean about how well they go together? They pull together a makeup color story really well.

Birchbox Sample Choice July 2019 modeled

Here’s how they look modeled, along with a base of the Dr. Jart+ moisturizing primer.

Verdict: This was a great Birchbox for me! I love everything this month (isn’t that always a great feeling??) and I also got a full-size blush that will last me a long time. I estimated that this box has a value of $55.99, which is an excellent value out of a $15 box!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Sample choice boxes are curated based on your beauty profile, so what you get will likely differ from what I received this month (but should be even more personalized to you).

Value Breakdown: At $15 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Acne Patches: $.74
  • Moisturizer: $1.22
  • Body Scrub: $1.13

  1. I loooooove that Purlisse scrub! I got a sample in Ipsy a few months back I think and whenever I used it at night, I’d wake up with actually glowing skin, even if I skipped my skincare routine!
That blush and lip gloss look great together too!

  2. Ouch! With their new program the curated boxes I want are gone when I go to choose. I got another darn eye liner this month and I have a 100 year supply of that. I rarely use eyeliner and lately I just ditch almost everything in the box because I really did not get to select something I desired. I used to be an “Ace” and I know they get first choice but I don’t want to buy a bunch of products just to be able to pick something I really want.

Birchbox was my first subscription (I was an early adopter) and I just made sure my sub is off of auto-renewal. I thought the curated boxes were such a good value but now they seem to be sold out all the time. The frustration I have at the end of the month and getting stuff I don’t really want has led me to realize their new program is just not delivering.

  3. I love this box, the lip and blush especially. Had I known sample choice boxes could be so nice, I would have given it a try. I have not done so yet because so many people on here have said you get garbage when you let them pick. You look so pretty with those colors. Thanks for showing us how they look on!

    • Thank you, Annika! And I think the sample choice boxes can be hit or miss, but I get hits more often than not. I like that you get to pick one of the samples; often when I look at the curated boxes there’s one or two main samples I would choose them for, too. Thanks for the compliment and thanks so much for reading!

  4. That Laritzy blush is beautiful. I’ve been looking for a good warm-toned, coral blush. For some reason sub boxes only send me cool-toned pink/mauve blushes (presumably because I’m fair-skinned).

    • Charlotte, I agree – I’m loving the corals this Summer!

  5. The turning white is a chemical effect of exposure to air or body heat for a gimmick, and has nothing to do with the contents of the blocked pore.

The lip gloss worked very well for you, but just looked like zombie makeup on me. I love anything Dr Jart or Alterna, so this was a win month. And the box is so pretty, for a change!

    • So how come only part of the patch turns white then? Shouldn’t the whole thing?

      • No – the chemical that causes that effect is only smeared on a portion of the patch.

    • Maybe that is why those patches never work for me. They show up in Vegan Cuts and K-beauty boxes pretty often (different brands, but the actual products always seem the same).

  6. I also chose the MAC lip gloss & received the Dr Jart moisturizer.

I only got 5 items, though. Pretty cool that you got 6! I’d love to see the Mighty Patch sample in one of my boxes.

  7. Love your haircut! Thanks for the review. I’ve been unhappy with Birchbox and hoping they change it up with newer brands. But after seeing this box I’d have been happy to get it.

    • Thank you, Becca! I haven’t loved my last couple boxes but I liked this one and am hoping to keep it that way for future boxes since they’ve “improved” their boxes. Thanks for reading!
