Gwynnie Bee May 2019 Review
This review is of the 3 items at a time subscription from 4/21 through 5/20:
LUCKY BRAND - Bandana Print Olive Henley Top
Although it is getting late in the season for long sleeves, this cotton tee by Lucky Brand was super lightweight and comfortable. The sleeves have almost a dolman cut, so the roominess through the body made it very breezy. I like the pattern a lot but was not completely in love with the colors. This was fun to wear around town.
NY COLLECTION - Tie Front Plum Multi Shirt Dress
I had really mixed feelings about this synthetic blend dress, but in the end, I think it is just too unflattering to wear. The positives include the color and pattern, and I love the collared neckline. I also really love the self-tie at the waist; I thought that part was flattering and stylish. I wish it had just gone into an A-line or even straight skirt from there! Unfortunately, it went into a ruching frenzy throughout the skirt. Ruching is a great feature used sparingly, and on parts of the body, you would like to draw attention to, such as a flat stomach or curvy hips. In this case, I felt like the ruching was not well executed.
VINTAGE AMERICA BLUES - Lace Up Printed Lara Henley
I love the vibrant colors in this cotton-blend bohemian top! I think the pattern is beautiful, too. The lace-up neckline is also really cute. The only issue I had, and this is really my own fault for not un-closeting it soon enough, is that it was super hot. The fabric does breathe, but it was a really thick woven cotton. It was just not practical to wear at this time.
LUCKY BRAND - Border Print Bandana Navy Peasant Top
Although this top was also long sleeved, it was another piece from Lucky Brand made from really lightweight cotton knit. I absolutely love the print on this one! I think the floral stripes are both clever and attractive. I came close to buying this piece.
MODCLOTH - Beet Print Babydoll Dress
I try to get a picture here and there of me actually wearing my Gwynnie Bee rentals out on the town, so I had my 13-year-old son snap this picture outside of a shopping mall while we were out together. It has been so long since I wore a babydoll dress! I forgot how comfortable and easy they are. This one is made from a cool cotton poplin, and I just can't get over how cute the beet print is! I enjoyed wearing this piece.
RENEE C - Pink Floral Fit And Flare Dress
My 13-year-old also took this picture outside of a church where he had just performed in a chorus concert. I am not usually a fan of pale pinks, but the print on this one was lovely, and the pink was vibrant enough to make it work for my skin tone. The synthetic blend fabric had a striped texture to it that made it very interesting and stylish. I also liked the open neckline on this dress. This was another piece I enjoyed wearing.
GILLI - Navy And White Twofer Fit And Flare Dress
Over the past year or so since twofers have come back into fashion, I have tried a lot of them, and I have to say that I think Gilli's are the most well-executed and best for my figure. This is another piece that I should have taken out of my GB closet before the weather got this hot, but it was so cute I wore it anyway. The top is a stretchy cotton knit blend, and the skirt is a textured polyester. I love the patchwork effect on the skirt!
JOHNNY WAS - Lace Trim Royal Blouse
Clothing by Johnny Was is typically pretty expensive, but to me, it is not always clear why. This piece, however, was completely obviously a very expensive piece. It is silk, first of all, and the embroidery is gorgeous! Embroidery is not easy to do on silk, so I appreciated that as well. The lace trim on the back is a wonderful stylish detail! The lace around the hem, however, is divine. I have never seen a honeycomb pattern in lace like this before! It's just beautiful. I felt really special in this top. I also thought it looked pretty good on me (despite being a bit too big and definitely too long).
The Verdict: Gwynnie Bee is so awesome! This month there were a couple of pieces that I should have pulled out of my closet due to the impending heat, but otherwise, it was a fantastic month. I especially loved the two dresses from ModCloth and Renee C, and the top from Johnny Was was gorgeous! I love being able to wear pieces that I otherwise would not choose. It helps to push me out of my comfort zone a bit. You never know what will look good on you if you don't get the chance to try!
