Facet Jewelry Box (Bead Stitching Version) May 2019 Review
I am never sure whether I’ll be working on a project for days or just a few hours with this subscription.
The first thing you see when you open the box is this full-color booklet. I haven’t shown you all of the pages inside, because part of the subscription fee is for the projects that are included. (Lately, I’ve been noticing some of the projects are from older issues of Bead & Button magazine, so if you’d like to do some similar projects, check out this series of books, especially numbers 10 and 11.)
This is a really nice-looking booklet, honestly, but I’d expect nothing less from the folks at Bead & Button (I’ve been a subscriber for a while now). There are also links to online resources if you need a little help with a technique.
This bracelet is basically a right-angle weave where you do the embellishment as you go instead of at the end. The Rizo beads (long light blue drops with darker coating on one side, if you’re not familiar with the shape) provide some textural interest. There is a length chart for this one but I’ve been burned in the past by those and ended up with bracelets that were too short, so I just periodically wrapped this around my wrist and kept going until the two ends almost touched, then added the clasp.
This took what I’d call an intermediate amount of time. I broke it up into two sessions. The pattern was super easy to learn so after the first few units; I just kept going without the need to refer to the instruction booklet, which sped things up a lot. I had beads of all types left over at the end, but I tend to make short bracelets because I have small wrists. The only materials needed here were scissors (though I’d suggest these shears for cutting Fireline as it may mar your scissors because it is pretty tough stuff).
Berry and Vine Earrings
These were super quick to work up. I don’t have a lot to say about them, to be honest. I think they are cute, and this is definitely the sort of pattern you could make or modify over and over again to use up small quantities of leftover beads. You once again need something to cut the Fireline and a pair of round-nose or similar pliers and that’s it. Be careful that you do not drop any beads here (except some of the seed beads, you do get plenty extra of those) because you get exactly the number you need.
Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Facet Jewelry Box, but you get the materials and instructions for making two complete pieces of jewelry. I was happy with the instructions and all of the materials provided this month (including the amounts, and that we got size 11 needles to go with 6lb Fireline, so threading was easy).
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Boxes go out after the 20th and people who sign up before the 15th will get that month’s box. If you sign up after the 15th, you may still be able to get that month’s box, but this is not guaranteed.
Value Breakdown: At $24.95 per box, you are paying about $12.48 per project.
