Sensory TheraPlay Box April 2019 Review
Each box includes a motivational quote card and this month's bright inspiration comes from Hans Christian Andersen. They also included a booklet listing all of the items, their value and a brief description of them along with pictures. On the back, they include a nice thank you and their contact information.
They always include a disclaimer card as well which I think is helpful in ensuring that materials are used properly. I have a background in Education and taught Special Education, so I think it’s important that they note that you are responsible for determining if it is appropriate for your child. Every child has different needs and some may mouth things more than others, for example, which means not all items will be safe for them.
Sensory Genius Stress Balls by Mindware - Retail Value $9.95
These stress balls are perfect for stress relief and for fine motor development. In addition to being nice and bright, each ball is a different level of firmness creating less or more resistance depending on your needs. The levels are firm, soft, and squishy, and I think all of them are somewhat firm and I like the soft texture on the outside of them.
Mega Stretch Lemur by Club Earth - Listed Value $6.99
This stretchy lemur is cute and perfect for my animal-obsessed son. He is soft and stretchy and his tail moves. This is a great tactile toy that is fun to manipulate, but unfortunately, after a little bit of light play, our little lemur is already falling apart. He has a little circle on his belly where he was sealed up, but it seems to be coming out. Fortunately, all of the little styrofoam balls from inside are contained in a plastic bag within the lemur so it hasn't made a mess. I can probably salvage it with some super glue, but I'm not sure I want to take the risk since we have a 1-year-old crawling around!
Globby by Schylling - Retail Value $5.99, Listed Value $9.99
This fun stress toy is made out of a thick latex that feels pretty durable. This firm toy is also a bit stretchy making him a great stress reliever and fidget toy. His angry little face is pretty fun, as is his name! Amazon reviewers mentioned that theirs broke, but so far, we haven't had any issues.
It takes a bit of strength to squeeze him which makes me think this would be a great therapeutic tool for working the muscles in your hand and strengthening them.
What's Going on Here Cards by Eeboo - Retail Value $11.99
I love receiving items like this in boxes! This set of cards features different picture scenarios that your child can use to describe the scene and what they think is happening. This is great for building their conversation and communication skills, and for having them make inferences. They can also use picture clues to help identify emotions in others, which I think would be especially helpful for those who have trouble regulating emotions.
There is an information card for the adult and the rest of the cards feature an illustrated scene on one side with a set of questions on the back for helping to guide the conversation. My kids enjoyed looking at these cards and in addition to trying to identify what was going on in the picture, we had some fun developing our own stories based on the cards. There are 50 in total (not including the parent cards) so there are a lot of different emotions and options for conversation!
Brain Tools Imagine by Tangle - Retail Value $5.99
I have been enjoying this silent fidget toy since we received it! I think the reason it appeals to me is that it has a latex-free rubberized layer that features different textures in the form of little bumps. It's almost like a firm gel coating that is soft to the touch and I find it to be very relaxing.
The pieces twist and turn and the shape opens and closes making it the perfect fidget toy for keeping hands busy and minds focused!
Play Dirt Bugs-in-a-Jar by Play Visions - Retail Value $9.93, Listed Value $14.99
This last item was completely unique to us and I thought it was a fun concept and I knew my kids would love it. It reminds me a bit of moon sand (I think? I get everything that isn't Play-Doh all mixed up!) in that it's light and silky to the touch. It comes out in separate pieces, but if you press them together it will stick and form some larger pieces and it is able to be molded.
The dirt looks pretty realistic and they even included some cute little rubber bugs inside for play! You can bury them under the dirt and dig for them for some tactile exploration. It is not sticky so it won't stick to little hands!
The kids begged and begged to play with this stuff so one day I complied, but I left daddy in charge and came back to quite the mess on the floor! Fortunately, since this stuff is smooth and not sticky like sand, it was fairly easy to clean up. Also, even though some ended up in the trash there is still more than enough for them to get a lot more play out of it!
Verdict: I always love seeing what Sensory TheraPlay Box will send each month since the curation is so unique and the items are usually big hits in our home. I think the Dirt Jar was probably the favorite item for the kids this month, while I really appreciated the conversation cards and all the various fidget and stress-relief toys. Although these are meant to help with those who have sensory processing issues or trouble regulating emotions, I think that these are skills that almost anyone can benefit from exercising and these toys are especially helpful in aiding that. As for the value this month, with a combination of retail and listed values, I total $50.84 which is a few dollars higher than the $47.86 box ($39.95 plus $7.91 shipping).
