Love with Food Deluxe April 2019 Box Review
The information card has changed yet again, probably due to Love with Food getting bought out by Snacknation, so there aren’t really themes anymore:
There was a little product literature this month, but not much. It actually had to do with the items in the box, too!
Legendary Foods Buffalo Blue Wing Seasoned Almonds (1.5 oz) – Buy 4 oz for $5.99
These are a repeat item, but they are pretty tasty, so I don’t mind all that much. They are lower in sodium than I would’ve expected for a savory food, and for some odd reason they contain steviol glycosides (sweeteners related to stevia and/or extracted from the stevia plant), though they don’t taste sweet to me. They will give you bad breath for sure, though (they have garlic).
B Bar Brownie Bar (1.5 oz) – Buy 12 for $19.20 (found here for $17)
These have about half whole grains (from oats), which is not really noticeable to me, but then I usually eat 100% whole grain products, so I am used to a rustic texture. One has 13 grams of sugar, though, which is quite high for a single serving snack (there are at least four different forms of sweetener in the ingredients list). Think of this more like a cookie than a healthful snack and you’re probably better off. It does taste pretty good if you’re a fan of sweet chocolate (which I am). This has some soy protein added, but it’s a small amount and this is not a protein bar.
Tomer Kosher Beef Stick, Original (0.9 oz) – Buy 10 for $15.50 (found here for $14)
I’ve been a vegetarian for over 25 years so this is not for me, and my husband (my usual tester for non-vegetarian products) doesn’t like meat sticks, so I dropped this off on the “free snacks” table at work. This is not a strictly vegetarian box and you will receive snacks like this from time to time. I find I have been receiving more of them lately and I can’t be sure if it’s because of meat-heavy diet trends (like keto and paleo) or whether it has something to do with the Snacknation takeover of Love with Food.
Bobo’s Oat Bites, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip (1.3 oz) – Buy 10 for $15.40 (found here for $13)
We received these in a different flavor last month. They are completely whole grain, which I appreciate. They are fine to eat but tasted like neither peanut butter nor chocolate chips to my husband and I (we split this). There were very few chocolate chips to be seen.
Blue Diamond Almond Nut Thins, Sriracha (2 oz)
This must be a new flavor because it is not on the Blue Diamond website. This is quite a generous quantity of these – 2 oz is a lot more than you usually get to sample for a cracker or chip from Love with Food. These are definitely spicy but I am a fan. The texture is great for a gluten-free product, too. (These are almond flour based, as you might expect from the name.)
Just Date Syrup (sample) – Buy 8.8 oz for $6.99
This is made just from dates and is meant to be used as a liquid sweetener. It also has some minerals like potassium and magnesium. It’s not a super neutral flavor but it worked well enough in my oatmeal. I don’t usually buy liquid sweeteners because I rarely use them and they tend to crystallize before I finish them up, but this was fun to try.
Country Archer Turkey Jerky, Hickory Smoke (1.5 oz) – Buy 10 for $30 (found here for $22)
This was another one for the free snacks table at work. This is made from antibiotic-free turkey in California and although it contains some soy sauce, it is gluten-free. This does also have Worcestershire sauce so although there are no fish ingredients on the label you may want to avoid it if you have fish allergies.
Skinnyjimmy!, Chocolate Peanut Butter (0.74 oz) – Buy 24 for $29.99
Jimmybars and these, their miniature counterparts, have been in food subscription boxes for about as long as I have been receiving food subscription boxes. They have a bit of texture from soy protein crisps that actually works because there are also peanuts and peanut butter blended in so there is some smoothness in between the crisp parts.
Pop’d Kerns, Sea Salt (1.25 oz) – Buy 12 for $13.44 (found here for $12)
I have come to the conclusion that I am just not into half-popped popcorn snacks. They seem to be popular, but I’d rather just have regular popcorn. There is nothing wrong with these, per se, and they’re actually quite high in fiber, which is great, but I think they’re just not for me for texture reasons (I did eat them as I have trouble keeping track of the various brands of this type of snack, but there’s nothing that really makes these stand out over other items of the same type).
Madegood Vanilla Crispy Square (0.78 oz) – Buy 12 for $14.40 (found here for $12)
This is a repeat item. However, these are vegan and I have to admit is kind of nice to have a snack like this from time to time (Rice Krispie treats are not vegetarian since marshmallows have gelatin in them). My only real quibble is with this company saying they contain vegetables. “Vegetable extracts” is last on the ingredients list, after salt and vanilla flavor, and even though the vegetables include highly colored ones like spinach, carrots, and beets, this snack has no color, so you’re not really getting vegetable nutrition from this snack. Enjoy it as a vegan/vegetarian Rice Krispie-style treat, instead.
Papa’s Skinless Popcorn Pops, Sweet and Salty (0.42 oz) – Buy 10 for $37.90 (found here for $19.99)
The idea here is that there’s no popcorn shell here so it can’t get stuck in your teeth. That is a good idea but, based on the size and texture of the pieces, I don’t think this is really popcorn (pieces are much too big and the wrong shape and texture). I think it is some sort of puffed snack made from corn. I would be interested in trying these in another flavor, but my husband and I both thought these tasted kind of charred or something.
PBFit (0.84 oz) – Buy 8 oz for $7.98
This is a type of product that I regularly buy. I can’t actually tell the difference among the 3 or 4 different brands out there (including PB2 and some others). My husband puts this in his oatmeal and I put it in smoothies. We have also made peanut butter and banana pancakes with this to keep the calories down. (Neither of us mixes it with water and eats it like peanut butter…) Anyway, we are fans.
Popcorners, White Cheddar (1 oz) – Buy 12, 7 oz Bags for $30
I have mixed feelings about this. I am elated to have received a flavor other than Kettle Corn (which I really don’t care for but keep getting, time after time, in food boxes). The white cheddar is good. But, I am not a fan of the texture. These are like kind of chewy in a way that makes me think of something that is starting to go stale.
Pure Protein Bar, Strawberry (1.76 oz) – Retail Value $1.99
I didn’t photograph the package open because I was planning on dropping this one off at work, as well – these contain gelatin so they’re not vegetarian (and my coworkers are not going to pick up opened packages, you know?). However, my husband ate this one before I got it to my office. He said it basically tasted and had the texture of a whey protein bar, and he’d be OK with me buying them if they didn’t have gelatin (we buy protein bars *I* can also eat so we don’t have like 6 boxes on the counter). He said it was weird that the package recommended drinking 8 oz of water when eating the bar. We figure it must have something to do with sugar alcohols because there is almost no fiber in these.
Double Dutch Caramel (1.16 oz) – Buy 15 for $21 (found here for $18)
I am never going to complain about stroopwafels. No, they are not particularly good for you. (And if you have allergies, please note these contain wheat, soy, dairy, and eggs.) But they taste very good, and I don’t feel too guilty about eating like half of one if I give my husband the other half.
Tone It Up Protein Bar, Peanut Butter Chocolate (1.41 oz) – Buy 4 Bars for $7.99
These are vegan and contain plant-based protein. I have had quite a few flavors of these by now. They have almost no fiber and are low in fat. I have to admit, this is probably not what I would reach for when I wanted a protein bar. They have these pea crisps that give me the impression of trying to provide bulk while lowering calories, but the calories are not a whole lot lower than your average whey protein bar (these are 170, Quest and OhYeah! One bar is between 180 and 230, typically).
The Daily Crave Veggie Chips (0.6 oz) – Buy 10 for $11.20 (found here for $10)
These are mostly made from potato starch with a bit of beet or spinach or tomato powder for coloring. They are pretty plain on their own but they are substantial enough that they would be good (and neutral) for dipping.
Verdict: There were 17 items in the April 2019 Love with Food Deluxe Box. This is an improvement over the last few months of 2018 when there were fewer than 15 items per month. Some items were things we had received before (Buffalo wing almonds, Madegood bar), and a few were not vegetarian (this is not a strictly vegetarian box), but there were some old favorites (toffee! seaweed!) and a few new discoveries so I was basically happy. Now that it has been a few months since SnackNation took over Love with Food, my overall impression is that things are improving. I noticed fewer kid-friendly options this month, which is fine by me, honestly, although that could change next month, of course.
