The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Info

Here is the info sheet for the products included.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - R And Co

R+Co PARK AVE Blow Out Balm,1.7 oz – Estimated Value $9.86 (buy the full-size version for $29)

I like that this blow out balm adds softness and protects from heat, and it smelled good with a scent blend of orange, cardamom, fig, guava, and amber. This didn't weigh my hair down, but if you have fine hair you probably want to start with a small amount of this first.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Oribe

Oribe Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream, 0.5 oz – Estimated Value $4.40 (buy the full-size version for $44)

I love a lot of products from Oribe, but this isn’t one of them. There wasn’t anything particularly bad about it, but I didn’t feel like it made a noticeable difference in my hair to justify the premium price that Oribe sells their products for. Like all Oribe products, though, this smelled great.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Shampoo

Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo, 1.35 oz – Estimated Value $5.40 (buy the full-size version for $34)

I am a very critical judge of shampoos - if it isn’t hydrating, I don’t want it near my hair. Luckily, this shampoo lived up to its claim of being a moisture shampoo, and I was really happy with how my hair felt after using. My hair didn't feel dry or tangled.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Conditioner

Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Conditioner, 1.35 oz – Estimated Value $5.40 (buy the full-size version for $34)

I love that we got the matching conditioner! This was like a tall drink of water for my hair, and I loved that it made things much easier when it came time to comb my curls. It is rare that I find a shampoo and conditioner duo that I like as much as this one, but I will take it.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Bumble

Bumble and bumble. Repair Blow Dry, 2 oz – Retail Value $15

This may be my favorite styling product in this kit - I love it. It really added softness and shine to my hair, and it also works as a heat protectant so you don’t have to use multiple products to make sure your hair is safe. I found it to be lightweight while still being nourishing, and I could also see myself using this on dry hair at the ends to help with split ends.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Number 4

Number 4™ Jour d'automne Smoothing Balm, 1 oz – Estimated Value $5.88 (buy the full-size version for $30)

I like how multi-use this smoothing balm is - it can minimize frizz while also protecting against humidity and heat damage. Since I have dry hair, I found this to be nourishing, but nothing about it seemed particularly special.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Amika

amika Brooklyn Bombshell Blowout Spray, 2 oz – Retail Value $10

This spray adds volume, body, and shine without weighing hair down, and I would say that it delivers on what it claims to do! I definitely didn’t find this to be heavy on my hair, and when I was done blowing my hair out I definitely noticed that there was a boost in volume, too.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Brush 1 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Brush 2 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Brush 3

Spornette 2" Square Heat Styler – Retail Value $26.70

This brush definitely isn’t for when I want to wear my curls naturally, but I thought it helped to smooth my strands when I was trying to blow out my hair. I would never pay this much for a brush, but I am happy to add it to my arsenal of tools at a discount.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Dryer 1 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Dryer 2 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Dryer 3 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Dryer 4 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Dryer 5 The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Dryer 6

amika Mini Ionic Hair Dryer in Lemonade – Retail Value $60

The fact that this kit comes with a mini Amika blow dryer was definitely what made me want to try this - I needed a new blow dryer, and I have been really curious about Amika tools. Along with being adorable, this thing packs a punch! It can take mostly dry hair to fully dry in five minutes, and it took less than thirty minutes for me to get my towel-dried hair fully dry and blown out. I actually use this on the lower heat setting, because I find the higher setting to be too strong.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Curls 1

Here I am with mostly dry hair.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Curls 2

And here is my head five minutes later using the diffuser head. I was amazed!

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Step 1

I decided I needed to see what this blow dryer could really do, so I set aside some time to blow out my hair. I don’t really do it (at all), and I am no expert, but I was happy to give it a try. I started out with towel dried hair and the amika Brooklyn Bombshell spray combed through.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Step 2

Next, I pinned most of my hair up with a clip and I ran the Bumble and Bumble cream through my hair. Using the air concentration nozzle and a fine tooth comb, I gave my best efforts at blowing it dry.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Step 3

Here is what one layer looked like when I was done. My hair looked so soft and shiny! I then repeated the processing, letting out a layer of hair at a time.

The Birchbox Blowout Kit May 2019 - Finished Look

Here was the finished look (wearing the scarf from my May Oui Please box, review coming soon!). This is definitely a different look for me, but I liked it! I am definitely thinking about picking up the heated straightening brush from amika to smooth out the ends of my hair that loves to curl (or a straightener, in general—I don’t own one!).

Verdict: I think this was another stellar discovery kit on Birchbox’s part - the value is high, and the quality of the brands sent are impressive. I am loving my new mini blowdryer, and honestly, it works well enough that I don't currently feel the need to get the bigger version. Birchbox promised a total value of $152, and by my math, this kit has a total value of $142.64. That is a little below, but I definitely feel like the value is there for $53 ($48 plus $5 shipping).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this Birchbox kit is still available.

Coupon:  Check out all the free gift with purchase coupons, and don’t forget to add your free sample pack with any $35 purchase.

Value Breakdown:  This box cost $53 ($48 + $5 shipping) and I calculated a total value of $142.64. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • R+Co: $3.66
  • Oribe: $1.63
  • Alterna Shampoo: $2.01
  • Alterna Conditioner: $2.01
  • Bumble and Bumble: $5.57
  • Number 4: $2.18
  • Amika Spray: $3.72
  • Spornette: $9.92
  • Amika Blow Dryer: $22.29

Thanks for the great review! I was strongly thinking of ordering this set, but like others, was concerned about the power of the little dryer.

Jessica, your curls are GORGEOUS! I would pay to have your lovely locks!

Hi Jessica, thank you for another awesome, thorough review.

On a side note, I also own and recommend the Amika straightening brush. I have very stubborn, coarse hair, so it takes a lot for me to get excited about hair products and tools. I have the first version of the brush. It gets my hair straighter than any iron ever has, and my hair STAYS straight (always the most difficult part for me!) until the next wash. I don’t even use any styling product, (besides a heat protectant, of course). The brush gets my hair calm, blown out, or pin-straight depending on how much brushing I do with it. It’s the only tool I don’t regret buying and I wish I got sooner!

Completely agree with you about the Amika heated brush. I usually let my thick, wavy and frizzy hair dry naturally then I use the brush. It only takes about 5 minutes and I have smooth, straight hair with zero frizz. My only complaint is after awhile, any product you use can gunk up the plastic bristles and it’s very hard to clean. I’m thinking of buying another one soon.

Thanks for your review of this kit. I just purchased it but didn’t realize how MINI the dryer was until I got it. I was concerned that it might not stand up to the demands of my thick, wavy and frizzy hair. But it looks like it handled your curls just beautifully. I have new HOPE!
Thanks again!

I love Amika tools. I have the smoothing/straightening hot comb and it’s fantastic! I bought this kit and plan to share it with my mom. We have very different hair. Mine thick and wavy hers straight and thin.
