Sephora Beauty Sleep Set Review

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep hair mask

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep hair mask

Sephora Collection Hair Sleeping Mask - Retail Value: $5

Hair masks are not something I do often, so this was different and fun for me. I love that the package comes in two compartments: one for the mask formula and one for a hair cap! I slept in this and then washed my hair the next day and I did feel that it was softer! Less static-y, too. I'm not sure if it felt stronger, but my hair is pretty fine anyway so maybe that's just not something my hair ever really feels. For $5 this is awesome!

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep hum pills

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep hum pills

HUM Nutrition Beauty zzZz Sleep Supplement, 7 day supply - Estimated Value: $2.30 (Buy a 30 tablet supply for $10)

I think including some HUM supplements in a favorites kit is a great idea. I've seen their supplements on Sephora's website before but never ordered them. The ingredients are pretty clean, and each pill has 10 mg of b6 and 3 mg of melatonin. These definitely help me fall asleep faster - they say to take one 20 minutes before bedtime and about 20 minutes after I could tell myself feeling noticeably more sleepy. However, I have a 1 and 3 year old and if I have to get up for them in the night, I didn't feel like it helped me get back to sleep afterwards. I am happy that it didn't seem to keep me from hearing them/the baby monitor. I also noticed the two or three nights I've tried these, I had pretty weird dreams.

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep origins cream

ORIGINS High-Potency Night-a-Mins™ Resurfacing Cream with Fruit-Derived AHAs, .5 oz - Estimated Value: $13.50 (Buy a 1.7 oz full-size for $45)

First of all, I am delighted by the "Night-a-mins" pun. This is a two-in-one, overnight moisturizer and peel with fruit-derived AHAs to help brighten and even your complexion. I'm really happy to have tried this night cream because it's a new favorite for me! It smells good, feels calming and hydrating, and I feel like my skin has just responded really well to it.

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep hot cacao mix

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep hot cacao mix back

Four Sigmatic Mushroom Hot Cacao Mix with Reishi, 1 packet - Estimated Value: $2 (Buy a 10-packet box for $20)

This is a hot cocoa mix that has reishi mushroom in it to help "diminish stress and promote restful sleep." I was definitely intrigued by this, and pleased that Sephora included another non-skincare/makeup product in this favorites set! However, when I viewed this on Sephora's website, I noticed under the "what else you need to know" section of the description, it says:

WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

I'm not really sure what all that's about! But, I was less excited to try it. I did dip my finger and taste the powder, though, instead of mixing up a whole beverage. It tasted much sweeter than I was expecting - something about mushrooms just prepared me for an earthy, bitter taste. It's not too sweet, and I got more of the cocoa flavor than anything earthy/umami, so I would expect it to mix up into a pretty decent-tasting drink, especially if you mix it with almond milk or something.

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep lip balm

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep lip balm open

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, .08 oz - Estimated Value: $2.29 (buy a .7 oz full size for $20)

What a lovely lip product! It's a "mask," I think because it's quite thick and easy to apply heavily but I've been wearing it at the beginning of the day, too. It's thick, creamy, melts onto my lips, and feels great on. A little goes quite a long way. This definitely feels luxe and pampering to me, and I expect to purchase the full-size once this runs out. They have a vanilla variation, which I am all about.

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep fresh lotus cream

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep fresh lotus cream open

FRESH Lotus Youth Preserve Dream Night Cream, .23 oz - Estimated Value: $7.19 (Buy a 1.6 oz full size for $50)

FRESH products have a lot of hype but I haven't really loved any of their products I've tried, until this one. This feels so emollient on my skin! It melts right in and still feels effective and dewy. The application feels so refreshing!

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep algenist cream

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep algenist cream open

Algenist Power Recharging Night Pressed Serum, .23 oz - Estimated Value: $10.93 (Buy a 2 oz full size for $90)

Algenist is a brand I grew to love while I worked at Sephora. They make some really effective anti-aging products. This one is a "pressed serum." It feels very firm and dense to the touch but melts into a serum when you rub it on your skin. My skin felt very moisturized and when I woke up, my skin still felt soft and hydrated. The description claims that this will "provide a smooth, supple, and radiant complexion in as little as 10 days," so I'm looking forward to working my way through this sample consistently night to night to see what I notice in that time!

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep sunday riley

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep sunday riley open

Sunday Riley Luna Retinol Sleeping Night Oil, .17 oz - Estimated Value: $15.13 (buy 1.18 oz for $105)

Ah, my beloved Sunday Riley. I know her products have a lot of hype, but I think they earn it! A little goes a long way with this oil - you don't need to use more than a couple of drops. The smell is, admittedly, a little strong but it's not too bad with the small amount you need. It reminds me a little of licorice? And don't worry, the color doesn't make your face look blue or anything weird. This oil is packed full of retinol and helps skin plumpness, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, redness, and pores. Pores and redness are where I've personally noticed the most difference from this oil. I will always be excited about Sunday Riley in a subscription box and fortunately, she seems to be in quite a few lately!

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep murad eye cream

MURAD® Retinol Youth Renewal Eye Serum, .17 oz - Estimated Value: $28.90 (buy a .5 oz for $85)

I never go without an eye cream, and this one is like a drink of water. It feels so refreshing. I really enjoy using this, but I also have to add the disclaimer that I don't have mature skin or under-eye circles on a regular basis, so I can't speak to the effectiveness on that regard.

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep belif mask

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep belif mask back

Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep belif mask open

BELIF Aqua Bomb Sleeping Mask, .33 oz - Estimated Value: $4.43 (buy a 2.53 oz for $34)

This little mask pod is so cute! It's almost like a little mini tupperware for your mask sample. Right after I opened this set, I heard a recommendation for this sleeping mask on one of my favorite podcasts and was excited to try it out. It's a cool, jelly formula that I think lives up to the "aqua bomb" name in the way it feels. I woke up noticing a difference in my skin's softness. It's great to actually notice a difference after using a product only once! I'll probably be able to get a total of 4-5 uses out of this sample packet.

The Verdict: I think this is a great Sephora Favorites kit! Sometimes I start to feel a little self-conscious when I am writing a review and feel like I'm raving about each product, but I really was pleasantly surprised while testing these samples. Everything was new to me except for the Sunday Riley oil, and I can say I'll be using up every one of them (except the reishi cocoa mix). These samples are quality and feel luxe, and the value is definitely there for the $36 price. They claim a $99 value and my estimates add up to $91.67 so I'd say they were accurate with that. Oh! And I just need to offer a friendly reminder to only use retinol products in the PM!

If you fall in love with the Algenist I have found it at TJ Maxx & Marshall’s for $14.99!! The full size! All the ingredients are the same and I checked the packaging and from the looks of what I saw online, it looks just like a packaging change. Great way to save $80!!!

Prop 65 is like tax, it’s every where in Cali.😅 You pump a gas, buy a cup of coffee, getting meds, go shopping, grocery et cetera.

DawnS

Just as an FYI in CA even all of the Starbucks have the Prop 65 warning up.

Reply ButtonReply

Haley Faye

Oh, good to know! Thanks – maybe I’ll go ahead and try the cocoa mix out then 🙂

Amy

That warning is required for products that contain any 1 of 300 ingredients that 1 in 1,000 people have reported issues with. Most of those ingredients are trace elements that are naturally found in plants including organic produce. (I’m a former buyer for Whole Foods Market.)

Julie B

I had the same thing happen with melatonin. I’ve had insomnia for years and of course everyone recommends melatonin, but to me it’s not worth having the unpleasant vivid dreams I had.

Haley Faye

Thanks for this input, Julie. We tried kid doses of melatonin with my now 3-year-old about a year ago during a really rough sleeping period, and he seemed to have very similar reactions as I did. He was having bad dreams or seeing things in his room or something weird like that. It’s just not a fit for us, either!

Amy

This dosage is too high and disrupts our internal body clocks, causing increased dream activity. MIT recommends only 0.3 mg. to lull you to sleep.

Pam

the prop 65 warning is just a formality because of the foil packet. there’s no lead in mushrooms.

Kay

Thank you for the review! I would love more of Sephora kits/sets to be reviewed!

Ks

Lead is found (naturally) in mushrooms. That’s all it is. If you eat mushrooms or anything else that is grown in the ground or has contact with water, you are subjected to various lead exposures.

Reply ButtonReply

Suzanne

It’s probably also because of the cocoa powder, it has some lead in it too. California’s warnings are a little crazy, baked goods all get a cancer warning.

And all coffees 😀

I love the LANEIGE, Lip Sleeping Mask. That small size lasts quite a while.

Serena

I wish there were fewer products with retinol. I’m breastfeeding and can’t use it.

Reply ButtonReply

Heather

I would discuss that with your dermatologist and the mother baby risk line! All the research actually shows that even In pregnancy retinol is fine.

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

“I’m not really sure what that’s about!”

Uh.

There’s literally a website printed right there that you can go to to get more information on “what that’s about.” It’s also very Google-able. California requires cancer warnings on a whole lot of stuff. Here’s a news story about it: https://www.businessinsider.com/california-cancer-warnings-coffee-2018-4#drinking-coffee-2

If you’re going to purport to put up informative reviews, you might consider including some information in them. Your hot chocolate is fine.

Melatonin makes me have weird dreams too. I can’t take it.

Reply ButtonReply

AmberC

I purchased those from HUM, and I didn’t experience any effects whatsoever. Didn’t make me sleepy, and I didn’t stay asleep. I don’t think I had any weird dreams either (well, weirder than normal)
