Lip Monthly January 2019 "New Year! New You!" Review

This month's theme is “New Year, New You" and they included a little note as well as a card to promote their Love Me bundle which is now available on their site.

Each month, Lip Monthly sends their products in a little makeup bag. The bag is small, just a bit bigger than my iPhone plus (which doesn't fit inside) and has a soft material on the outside. This bag isn't my favorite design (although Washington Redskins fans like my husband might appreciate this burgundy and gold!), but it is fitting for January!

Manna Kadar Miracle Balm - Retail Value $19

I really liked this balm and felt like it was very hydrating. It contains argan oil, vitamin A and vitamin E and while it said you could use this for cuticles, I think it was a bit too sticky for that. It didn't feel sticky on my lips at all though, so I'll keep this solely as a lip balm!

This balm gave my lips a nice glossy finish and it is supposed to blend to match your lip and skin tone and I think it definitely enhanced my natural coloring. Also, thanks to Haley for giving me the idea to hold the tubes up in photos after reading her reviews!

Hola Neon Liquid Lipstick in The Easy Sell - Retail Value $17 (found here for $10)

The packaging of this lipstick is fantastic! The bright colors on the box and then the shiny gold accents on the tube gave it such a nice presentation.

Other than the nice color, that's about the only positive thing I could find in this lipstick after testing it out! This matte lipstick was horribly sticky and tacky on my lips. It felt so uncomfortable and when I tried to remove it, this stuff would not budge! It was made a little better by adding some Miracle Balm on top, but once that wore down it was back to being tacky.

This is what my lips looked like after rubbing it off and the bottom is where I tried to remove the swatch from my arm. This is after SCRUBBING my arm with my Makeup Eraser and waterproof micellar water! So I guess you could definitely say this lipstick is long lasting, but it's just a little overkill for me. Even an hour later I was still trying to get this off my lips because they had started to get a nice thick uneven line around the edges. Needless to say, this was not for me! It seems to have pretty positive reviews from what I've seen, so maybe I just got a bad tube?

Cougar Mineral Lipstick in Sangria - Estimated Value $4.80 (based on this list price of 5 for $23.99)

This Cougar lipstick is my new go-to lip color! This went on with a nice subtle shine and wore down nicely and evenly, although it did lose its shine after a while. This particular lipstick wasn't listed on their site and when I searched, I only came up with this sold as part of a set at Groupon and Walmart.

It wasn't incredibly long lasting, but I really thought the color was flattering...until I came into the room with it on and my two-year-old asked me, "what's that on your face?" Rude! But that won't stop me from wearing this.

Doucce Relentless Matte Lip Crayon in Winterberry - Retail Value $22

This lip crayon could easily replace the Cougar lipstick as my go-to shade because it was so similar in color, but just a touch darker and without the shine, since it is a matte crayon. I was so surprised to see how red it looks in the photos on the Doucce site. I guess this is why buying lipstick online is so difficult!

My lips are a bit dry here, probably due to my scrubbing attempts after the Hola Neon the night before, so it doesn't look quite even here. I still thought it was a nice shade and pretty flattering. It actually wore down a little unevenly for me, but just touching it up with a bit of the lip balm really seemed to bring the color back to life.

Here is it with the lip balm over it. I guess the Miracle Balm might have to go to the top of my list this month since I could wear it with everything!

Swatches from top to bottom, Miracle Balm, Doucce, Hola Neon, Cougar.

Verdict:  This month was a great selection from Lip Monthly and I was actually in need of some more berry type colors which both the Cougar and Doucce products delivered! The Miracle Balm is perfect for a winter product since it is hydrating and leaves my lips looking glossy despite how chapped they actually feel! That Hola Neon was a big no from me due to the stickiness, but I did like the color and I was impressed with the incredible staying power. I estimate the total value of the items to be $62.80 which is great for a $12.95 box.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

THE WORST SERVICE EVER! DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY.
I originally paid for a 6 month subscription last October, I then waited three months for the first bag. Which I only got once I contacted them several times. The second bag never came, so I disputed the original charge with my credit card company figuring the fact of them not providing the product I PAID for would be enough info for them. Unfortunately my credit card company sent them the payment right back 2 weeks later. Lip Monthly did end up sending two bags that they “missed” sending me – but NOW again three months later – they have sent nothing more. I keep contacting them to ask after MY NEXT bag – and they give me the run around.

Consider your money just GONE with no hope of getting the product you’re owed if you give this company your money. IF you get something – count yourself lucky.

I wrote a very long, very informative post on this thread re: the history of Lip Monthly, what they are doing now, etc. My post never showed up. There was no offensive content. There were no links to other sites. There was absolutely no reason why my comment should have been filtered out. I don’t feel like taking the time to write another comment now. I’m just wondering why I should waste my time writing when it isn’t going to get posted?

First, I want to thank you for reviewing this subscription, and I hope you will continue to do so. There are some variations in the products, so not everyone will get the same colors.
I have been subscribed to Lip Monthly for a little over 3 years now. I have heard tales of bad customer service, but I have never had any issues. When I started, we received 4 lip products per month and one non make-up item every month, but they changed to only sending the 4 lip products at some point. There was a time, as Linda mentioned previously, when we could choose a color for one or two of our products, but like she said, they weren’t always good options. Because I have been subbed for so long, I still get the bag for $10 per month versus the $13. The way I look at it is that I get to try items for $2.50 each. There are a lot of color misses for me, too (personally, I like the bright colors and the deep colors, but no neutrals for me, thanks!), but I’m not out that much money, and it’s worth the $10 for the fun of opening a surprise bag. I utilize the MSA swap site, and I often use the little LM bags as a way to further protect the items I am sending (like, if the bubble mailer isn’t enough but bubble wrap would be over the top).
I would also like to mention that some people complain about the brands that LM sends, but this month they sent the exact same brand and color as Allure in the Doucce “Winterberry,” and Birchbox has sent the Manna Kadar balm before, so some of their products are right up there with the other beauty boxes.
Finally, they have recently revamped their website and I think they are trying to make some other changes or something, too. However, customization is no longer an option at this time.

Thank-you for your detailed review!
They were doing a try-for-$5 deal this month, so I’ve signed up to try it. Not sure if I need that many lip products, so I probably won’t do every month, but if all goes well, maybe I will purchase a box every few months and hope that I like one or two of the products in it.

Mascara and eyeliner too

I’ve always had the best luck getting those random mascara mistakes off by rolling a Q-tip in any brand of hand, face or body lotion until the cotton is moistened and then basically erasing even the most resistant waterproof mascara.

Almost any kind of oil (argan, coconut, jojoba, almond, olive etc) will get pretty much any liquid lipstick off. Any time you get a lippie that just won’t budge, you can rub just a little oil into it. It will soften it up and you can wipe it right off.

I was going to say that…Vaseline or baby oil will do it. Put that on the lips and let it soak in a minute, then wipe off. Don’t scrub your lips raw!

Both Vaseline and baby oil are great for removing stubborn eye makeup too. Minimal pulling is required, and no one is allergic to Vaseline, so it’s non-irritating. While I like to try different eye makeup removers, I always go back to Vaseline as the skin around my eyes is so sensitive.

That’s good to know! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 Usually the other methods I used work just fine, but I guess I needed just a bit more this time! lol

The colors look great on you. It convinced me to sign up. I did click on the link but it didn’t give me the 20% off. Is there a code I could use instead?

Love the colors on you! I had signed up for a 3 month subscription and had shipping issues….where I had to email them constantly to ask for my “bag”! The website was down for quite awhile and when it was back up….it said I didnt have an account! I ended up cancelling.

Kids say some of the funniest things! I received a tube of the hola neon in my Ipsy last month and fell in love with it. After it dried my lips felt like velvet and I actually forgot I even had lipstick on after awhile. And it did stay on for hours and hours. All the shades you received look really nice on you. Thanks for sharing!

Reply ButtonReply

Brandi D.

Thanks, Alisha! It was definitely long-lasting, but the texture was not velvety at all for me. Maybe it really was just a bad tube! I’ll keep an open mind on this one knowing you had a different experience! 🙂

Lol my three year old always comments that my “mouth looks funny” when I wear lipstick too. Everything looks great on you!

Wow! I don’t think I’ve seen you look bad in any lip colors! That balm looks tempting, it pays for the rest of the box.

I’m subscribed to this. I signed up in October. I had problems with not receiving my bag. Customer service did help. They had website issues. My address keeped changing back to their address so the bag never shipped. Now everything is fixed finally I hope. I actually got my bag for this month. Worth the price. But shipping issues can happen which is ok as long as I got what I paid for.

Brandi D.

Oh no! Well I’m glad you finally got your bag! 🙂

I was subscribed to Lip Monthly for 2 years. I cancelled almost a year ago. It was a very rare occurrence to receive colors I liked or wanted to use. Almost EVERYTHING I received was dark shades of red, brownish red, brown or blackish purple. I’m pretty reasonable but after 24 months of lip products, all I kept was just a little over a handful of lip products I wanted or could wear. And 24 very little bags I really couldn’t put anything in. I gave almost 99 % away. I had to cancel because for me personally it was a waste of money. Even though they can give you a chance to personalize your bag by choosing 1 or 2 of the colors of you lip products, I never chose 1 that I really wanted because I had to choose between 2 colors they had that weren’t right for me. After 24 months, 96 products, to only keep 8 products was not worth it for me. It they’d offer 1 shade in each shade category (i.e. nude, red, pink, etc), I would’ve stayed. But everything is red, brown or dark shades.

I got the Hola Neon in ipsy, and the same thing happened to me. It was awful!! I couldn’t get it off, and it felt so horrible on my lips. Yuck!!
