Scent Box December 2018 Review

This month, I received Scent Box’s “Scent of the Month.” Although I’ve tried similar services in the past, this subscription is relatively new for me, so let’s take a look:

In the past, I have received an information card with details about the men’s and women’s fragrances for the month, but I did not receive any paperwork this time. In case I have not mentioned it in the past, you get a new holder every month and the fragrance vials actually cannot be removed from the holders. But the fragrance is printed on a sticker on the bottom, and the holders tend to be different colors each month, so you can still keep them sorted out.

DKNY Be Tempted – Estimated Value $14.10 (buy 1 fl oz for $52)

Interestingly, this is currently unavailable from the Donna Karan main site, Macy’s, and Ulta, though I found it for sale at Kohl’s (linked above) and Amazon (not always trustworthy for designer fragrances from third-party sellers). It was only introduced in 2016 so I am not sure what is going on. If it is discontinued, it is probably not all that old for a fragrance so it is still just fine to wear and it may mean that Scent Box is a good place to stock up on favorite fragrances that are no longer available elsewhere.

Anyway, I found this kind of sweet in a way that really agreed with me. (Lately I have liked other sweet fragrances like Prada Candy and Aquolina Pink Sugar.) Top notes are red berries, vanilla, and apple, and of these, I’d say the vanilla was most noticeable to me. I am a fan of vanilla in fragrances so this was a win.

Mid notes include licorice, patchouli, myrrh, and rose. I am not a fan of the *flavor* of licorice, but I think as a fragrance note, it works. The patchouli wasn’t super strong, nor was the rose. I think the mid notes mostly just blended in and enhanced the overall experience instead of defining the fragrance on their own.

Base notes include cassia, lemon, violet, and orange blossom. Despite the number of fruit and floral notes, I didn’t find this to be an overall fruity or floral fragrance (maybe a little fruitier, in line with the sweetness mentioned earlier). On the other hand, everyone’s body chemistry is different and that could just be how this one works for me. Sillage and longevity were average.

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $14.10. That is pretty close to the month-to-month cost of the subscription. I do want to point out a couple of things. (1) The value in fragrance subscriptions can be manipulated based on what fragrances you choose to fill your queue with (you can go with all super expensive ones if that’s what you want). (2) Unlike with some of the other fragrance subscriptions, you get a new case every month with Scent Box. (3) If you end up with a fragrance you don’t like, you can do up to one free exchange per month. That last point is what really sets Scent Box apart from similar services, I think.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $14.10 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent or product you choose).

Actually, the bottles can be removed from the holder. They can also be twisted off when empty to refill the bottle with the same fragrance if you like the fragrance enough to buy a bottle of it.
When you twist up the scetnt to spray it, you can pull it up and it’ll come off. The bottle doesn’t have to scent labelled on the bottle but that’s ok.
The packaging is exactly like the atomizers & bottles that Scentbird offers (which I subscribe to as well).
I refill the little bottles with fragrance to go back in the atomizer all of the time.
Hope this helps.

When I tried to pull the bottle out, the sprayer cap came off but the bottle did not come out. Maybe it was just stuck that time? But I stopped trying after that.
