Pet Treater December 2018 Review

There’s not a traditional information card with this subscription so there’s not always a stated theme, but you will occasionally see some commonalities running throughout the box contents.  This month, I guess it was Christmas-related, but then Nyx doesn’t care about themes.

There isn’t an item list with this subscription (it is my understanding some items may vary), but you usually get a picture of a dog.

There are sometimes advertisements in the box, as well.  They may or may not relate to the box contents.

Artist Collection “The Dog” Playing Cards – Retail Value $9.99 (found here for $7.49)

Every month (or almost every month) Pet Treater will send a “for your human” item.  This month, it is these playing cards. This is probably one of my favorite “for your human” items ever received, mostly because the photographs are just so adorable.

Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations Tree Cookie – Buy 6 for $6.50

Most months, there will be a treat from Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations.  They are usually seasonal, like this tree, and sometimes they are exclusive to the box.  I like how Pet Treater has partnered with this small company to send out a new, exclusive item (even if it is a relatively low-value item).

Little Critters PetProtect Quality First Aid Kit – Retail Value $14.99

This has various first-aid items including a tick removal device, which is probably good to have around although Nyx is on Simparica (she had a Demodex problem due to being immune suppressed and Simparica controls those mites) so she probably won’t need it.  There is quite a lot packed in here and I’m thinking a lot of it could be used on cats as well, so I will hang onto it and hope I don’t need it!  (Luckily the emergency vet is super close to our house as well…)

Seasonal Kerchief

Pet Treater sends these out pretty often.  They aren’t the highest quality of printing (single color on rather rough material) but they are large enough for a Rottie neck, which is nice.

Bow Wow Pet Pixel Monkey Dog Toy – Retail Value $13.58

This brand shows up in Pet Treater fairly often.  It’s hard to find these items for sale online although Amazon third party sellers and eBay sellers do often have them available.  I think this is a reasonable price for a dog toy this size. Nyx thought this was pretty awesome although it was not the most durable toy ever.  (Pet Treater isn’t really for heavy or destructive chewers.)

Puppy Scoops Ice Cream Mix 5.25 oz – Retail Value $6.99

Puppy Scoops shows up pretty often in Pet Treater.  You add hot water and stir, then put it in the freezer.  This has a much shorter ingredients list than most of the ice cream products for dogs from the supermarket.  Nyx isn’t able to have dairy, but I happen to know that my parents’ dog loves this stuff, so I’ll be sending it on to them.

Bow Wow Pet Knotted Barrel Rope for Dogs

This is one of those Bow Wow Pet products I can’t find available online, but I think this is entirely reasonable for a second toy and Nyx enjoyed it quite a bit (though she did gnaw it until it was destroyed).  This one was big enough for Nyx but not so big a somewhat smaller dog couldn’t enjoy it too (though dogs under 10 pounds might have trouble).

Loving Pets Nature’s Choice Apple Wrapped with Chicken1.25 oz – Buy 6 oz for $10.75

This appears to be a sample-sized bag rather than a full-sized one (apparently you can buy this size of package at Dollar Tree stores according to my online research, which would be an inexpensive place to pick one up if you want to see if your dog likes it).  These have a pretty simple ingredients list – just apple and chicken, plus glucosamine and chondroitin (good for the joints) plus vitamin C. Because there aren’t really preservatives, I’d finish this off within a few days after opening, or else refrigerate.

I finally cornered her in the kitchen for this photo.

Nyx enjoyed the pixel monkey toy although she did destroy it pretty quickly.

Verdict: There were 8 items in the December 2018 Pet Treater box, for an average value of about $3.12.  I couldn’t find everything online (some closeouts, custom items, etc.) so I didn’t try to calculate a total value.  I feel that the contents of the box this month are representative of what you’d receive in a typical month. I think the toys were size-appropriate for an 80+ pound dog but would also work for 50-60 pound dogs.  (Pet Treater is generally quite good about sending size-appropriate toys for large dogs, though I hear they sometimes send the exact same toys for small dogs.)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription would start with the January box.

Value Breakdown: At $24.99 for the box, you are paying about $3.12 per item.

I am really unhappy with this company. You can not cancel online and I have been calling them since the 26th of Dec and get no answer, just a canned message, and left several messages. I have sent emails and I don’t know what else to do. I am going to be livid if my card gets charged again.

I have gotten through to them a few times through email, just recently. It takes a few days. I found the customer service email address on their site (don’t reply to shipping emails, etc. — they won’t get those).

You may be able to have your credit card company stop future charges from them, I have had to do that with another company in the past where they charged me four times for a subscription and never sent anything.
