November 2018 Culture Carton “Alarcon” Review
My husband, John, is helping me with this review by testing all of the products and giving me his perspective. I have to keep him away until I snap photos because he always wants to tear open the boxes.
An info card with an introduction to the month’s theme and contents is included. This month’s theme is “Alarcon.” The items are curated to help you keep warm while looking stylish.
Gentlemen of the North Scarf – Retail Value $29.81
This is such a nice looking scarf and I love the royal blue and white plaid on John. The 60% acrylic/40% polyester material is super soft and lightweight but warm. The scarf is about 12″ wide and 56″ inches long. It looks great worn draped under the lapels of an overcoat or wrapped close to the neck. It’s nice to have a scarf option that pairs well with suites for winter events too.
Tenfed Toque (Beanie) – Retail Value $29.99, Listed Value $25
This 100% acrylic beanie is nice and thick with lots of stretch. The best part about it is the company and their charitable mission. For every Tenfed items sold, 10 meals are provided for hungry children around the world.
Celebrity Sox – Retail Value $12
These wool-blend socks are soft and plush, perfect for wearing with boots or when lounging around. I really like the heather blue and cream details and I think they look nice enough to wear both casually or with going-out looks. They are thick enough to provide padding in boots but thin enough to be able to be worn with more low-profile shoes without being too bulky. I actually love big, thick socks, so John better watch these closely…:)
This month’s novel is about a young actor who lives in Latin America. As he chases his dream of being part of the theater, he becomes wrapped up in the stories of his fellow actors’ lives. The novel was written in 2013 by Daniel Alarcon. John is particularly interested in the author because he was raised in John’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama and is an alumnus of John’s high school, Indian Springs School.
Book summary on Amazon:
The breakout novel from a prizewinning young writer: a “surrealistic tour de force” (O, The Oprah Magazine) about one man’s obsessive search to find the truth of another man’s downfall.
Nelson’s life is not turning out the way he hoped. His girlfriend is sleeping with another man; his brother has left their South American country, leaving Nelson to care for their widowed mother; and his acting career can’t seem to get off the ground. That is, until he lands a starring role in a touring revival of The Idiot President, a legendary play by Nelson’s hero, Henry Nuñez, leader of the storied guerrilla theater troupe Diciembre. And that’s when the real trouble begins.
Nelson’s fate is slowly revealed through the investigation of the narrator, a young man obsessed with Nelson’s story—and perhaps closer to it than he lets on. In sharp, vivid, and beautiful prose, Alarcón delivers a compulsively readable narrative and a provocative meditation on fate, identity, and the large consequences that can result from even our smallest choices.
The Verdict: Culture Carton always has strong curation and great themes. I’m excited that John received a novel he hasn’t read yet. It’s also great that he and the author share some similar background experiences. We are headed to Tulsa, OK soon, so the warm accessories will be perfect for our (unprepared) selves. This box makes for a great gift for any guy who is interested in building his library of classic novels and staple lifestyle items in a fashionable and clever way.
