Birchbox Nighttime - Info Sheet 1

Here is the info sheet detailing the products included.

Birchbox Nighttime - Cicapair 1

Birchbox Nighttime - Cicapair 2

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair™ Tiger Grass Cream, 0.17 oz - Estimated Value $4.80 (buy the 1.7 oz version for $48)

Tiger Grass is the easier way to say Centella Asiatica, a plant that is native to Asia and is known for its antioxidant properties and the ability to soothe skin. It is actually called tiger grass because tigers would roll around in this plant to soothe wounds. If it is good enough for a tiger it is good enough for me, and I actually am deeply in love with the entire Cicapair line from Dr. Jart+ because of the drastic difference it has made in my skin. If you are acne-prone, have sensitive skin, or have natural redness or rosacea, you need to give this a try. Honestly, even if you have none of those skin ailments you'll probably still love this cream.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix - Buy the 0.5 oz bottle for $69

I can forgive Birchbox for sending a single-use foil sample since a half ounce bottle of this stuff is so expensive. That being said, my one night of use didn't really show any results. If you want me to spend $69 on an eye cream you have to show me results first. #sorrynotsorry

Birchbox Nighttime - Huxley

Huxley Secret of Sahara Oil Essence, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $9.76 (buy the full-size version for $58)

Huxley is a luxe Korean skincare brand, and I am always happy to try more products from their lineup. Even though it feels like I have a pretty involved skincare routine, I don’t currently use essence. You apply this after cleansing and toning to add hydration, which should help your treatment serums be more effective. I definitely think my skin has been more hydrated while using, so I think it is safe to say this product does what it says it’ll do. I will say that I am not impressed that this has alcohol in the ingredients list, but it isn’t at the top so it shouldn’t irritate your skin.

Birchbox Nighttime - Pillow

Thisworks® Deep Sleep™ Pillow Spray, 0.17 oz - Estimated Value $1.97 (buy the 2.5 oz version for $29)

I still have my full-size bottle of this stuff from a past FabFitFun box and I use it every night. This is an essential oil blend of lavender, patchouli, and chamomile, and the aromatherapy really does help me to quickly drift off to sleep.

Birchbox Nighttime - Ptr

PETER THOMAS ROTH Retinol Fusion PM Night Serum, 0.40 oz - Estimated Value $26 (buy the 1 oz version for $65)

Even though I am relatively young at 24 I have been very curious about adding a retinol in my routine as a preventative measure, but at 1.5% retinol, this is WAY too strong for my skin (the recommended percentage is 0.1% when you're first starting off). I still want to try this, so I currently have a patch test chilling on my inner arm that is a mix of one drop of this with a dose of my Drunk Elephant Marula Oil, and if there's no irritation I will be applying this once a week. If you're curious about retinol products please be sure to be careful with sun exposure, as you will be much more sensitive. Also be sure to not over-exfoliate if you want to try retinol but also use other chemical exfoliants (for example, Sunday Riley Good Genes or Drunk Elephant Baby Facial).

Birchbox Nighttime - Derma e

DERMA E Overnight Peel with AHAs, 0.25 oz - Estimated Value $2.34 (buy the 2 oz version for $18.75)

This is a prime example of a product you wouldn't want to mix with a retinol until you know how your skin reacts. This is an AHA treatment that should work well for my sensitive skin friends because it is gentle and hydrating while still be effective. I love overnight AHA treatments because I always wake up the next day with glowing skin, but be sure to use sunscreen because this is another product that can make you sensitive to the sun (though you should be wearing sunscreen regardless).

Birchbox Nighttime - Kiehls

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil, 1.4 oz - Estimated Value $7.59 (buy the 5.9 oz version for $32)

I love Kiehl’s! This cleansing oil completely removed a full face of makeup with ease, and I love that it has squalene. Squalene is a derived from olives and it is a skin-softening ingredient packed with antioxidants.

GLOV Bunny Ears Headband - Retail Value $9.40

When I first saw this I thought it was just another animal ear headband, so I was a bit surprised to open it and see that it wasn’t in the shape of a normal headband— that is, the ends are not connected. You actually tie the headband in a knot (over/under style), and when you’re done you can adjust the flexible bunny ears to stand up. This actually is one of the most comfortable and cute skincare headbands I have used, and I like that by tying my own knot I am getting the perfect fit for my head.

The Verdict: This box had everything- soothing skincare goodies, potent nighttime treatments, and even a cute bunny ears headband! I am really excited to own my first retinol, and, though I wasn't expecting it, the headband is one of my favorite products in the box! It's a bit of a bummer to get a single-use foil sample, but as a whole, I think this was a great discovery kit. Birchbox promised a value of $64 with this kit, and by my math, they came pretty close for a total value of $61.86, not including the eye serum.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this kit is still available.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $30 ($25 + $5 shipping), and I calculated a value of $61.86. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Tiger Grass: $2.34
  • Huxley Essence: $4.73
  • Pillow Spray: $0.95
  • PTR Retinol: $12.61
  • Derma E Peel: $1.13
  • Kiehl’s Cleansing Oil: $3.68
  • Glov Headband: $4.56
  • Eye Serum – not included.

Does the headband have some sort of wire in it to make it bend and stand up easily? What a great idea. I don’t have any like this.
