Birchbox Man Sample Box December 2018 Review
I’m having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box since he is the expert in being a guy. 🙂 Just a quick snapshot of his skin and hair:
- Face – Smooth, clear, and in great shape considering he does nothing to keep it that way. He had acne as a teen but took Accutane, so, no more active breakouts but some scarring. I’m currently trying to convince him how important it is to work on preventing aging before they start.
- Hair – Course and wavy.
Each box comes with a card detailing the month’s theme, items included, and some tips on how to use them. Now, on to the items!
Anthony High-Performance Continuous Moisture Eye Cream, 15ml – FULL SIZE! Retail Value $38
I will try my best to motive John to add an eye cream to his (non-existent) skincare routine. But, if that fails, I’m certainly stealing this for myself. I like that it is a pump bottle and that there is no detectable fragrance. Ingredients like caffeine and jojoba oil should help decrease puffiness while keeping the thin skin around the eyes hydrated. The formula is lightweight and sinks in quickly leaving just a little bit of sheen.
Daily Concepts Multi-Functional Charcoal Soap Sponge, 45g – FULL SIZE! Retail Value $8
I’m not sure what John’s thing about soap is, but he loves it. So much so, that he only makes it through a couple of uses before wanting to try a new one. So, this smaller-sized bar is perfect for him. It’s actually not just a bar of soap, but also a sponge, so he gets a little exfoliation while scrubbing. He doesn’t necessarily like rubbing a bar of soap directly to his skin, so it’s taking some getting used to. He loves the spicy scent though.
Hims Everyday Moisturizer, 3ml – Estimated Value $1.80 (Buy a 30ml full size for $18)
I’ve been reading a lot of buzz about this brand recently, so I’m glad John received this sample. I appreciate the simplicity of the brand’s packaging and their goal of getting men to use products they need. This moisturizer is lightweight, subtly scented, and leaves John’s skin moisturized yet mattified. My only complaint is that it’s a day cream but lacks SPF so he has to add that after.
Kiehl’s Age Defender Power Serum, 5ml – Estimated Value $3.33 (Buy a 75ml full size for $50)
Since John is a beginner with skincare, I helped him by giving him a mini facial with this serum and the eye cream and day cream above. When I asked him how his face felt, his exact words were, “My face feels breezy.” I think this is a nice men’s facial serum because it has a gel-lotion texture that rubs in easily and sinks in fast. It is dimethicone-based so it leaves that velvety feel that I associate with makeup primers. John can get away with just wearing this alone (without moisturizer) since it gives him a shot of hydration and a smooth, matte finish.
Oars + Alps Moisturizing Bar Soap, 38.27g – Estimated Value $2.69 (Buy a 171g full size for $12)
To John’s delight, another bar of soap is included this month. This is a sample size, but like I mentioned earlier, perfect for John. The formulation of this bar is more moisturizing and gentle with ingredients like organic, fair trade shea butter and certified sustainable palm oil. The scent is cleaner and earthy too. My sensitive skin even likes it. This bar is the winner of this month’s soap duel.
Verdict: John’s first month of Birchbox Man was a great start to this sub. He loved the soaps and I like that he can become familiar with different types of skincare targeted toward men, both in branding and formulation. He received two full-sized products which is awesome! I estimate a value of about $53.82 for this box. For a cost of $10 with free shipping, I think that’s great.
