Our Review

Sephora Faves Mystery Lip Kit 2018 Kat von D lipstick

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Ludwig, 0.1 oz/ 3 mL – Estimated Value $9.09 (Buy a .22 fl oz full size for $20)

Ludwig is a “nude fawn” shade. It looks slightly more cool-toned in person than it shows in the photo. Kat Von D Liquid Lipsticks are my go-to for a long-lasting matte lipstick. I have collected quite a few shades over the years! They feel very comfortable, the formula is super pigmented with just one coat, and it lasts a really long time – basically all day unless you eat or drink something with a lot of oil or grease. I love these lipsticks. I really got into them and wore them daily when I first had my oldest child because I can kiss my babies all day with these on, and little hands and faces won’t transfer, smudge, or smear it.  Ludwig is a shade I’ve never tried before, and it’s a super neutral shade that will work very well, especially with more intense eye looks that I tend to wear in the Fall and Winter, or with dramatic holiday party eyes!

 Bite Beauty Multistick in Almond, 0.07 oz/ 2.1 g – Estimated Value $9.88 (Buy a .17 oz full size for $24)

Ummm, this is my new favorite lip color for the season! This shade, Almond, is a rich mahogany. I love wearing browns in the Fall and Winter. I haven’t tried Bite Beauty’s new multistick formula until now, and I like it! These multisticks are designed for use on eyes, lips, or cheeks. Each stick is actually 35% powder, so it blends easily and wears more like powder, too. For eyes and lips they suggest applying with your finger, but for lipstick, I see no reason not to just use it directly, unless you want to keep it extra sanitary for colors you plan to regularly also use on your eyes or cheeks as well. For cheeks, you can dab this and blend well with your fingers or brush for best results. This wore comfortably on my lips and lasted several hours!

Sephora Faves Mystery Lip Kit 2018 ciate lipstick

Ciaté London Glitter Flip in Infamous, 0.05 oz/ 1.5 mL – Estimated Value $9.50 (Buy a .10 oz full size for $19)

My mystery item was Ciate’s Glitter Flip liquid lipstick. This shade, Infamous, is a very pretty and versatile berry shade. This lipstick also comes with “instructions”: When you apply it, it’s supposed to be a metallic-matte finish. Then you can press your lips together to make it turn into a glitter finish and is meant to get even more glittery the more you do so. I’m not sure I quite see this “magical” transformation – it looks pretty glittery to me from the get-go. Maybe slightly more noticeable with pressing/time? Perhaps it is more obvious with other colors. The reviews on this product sound like others have had success, so I may have to play with this some more and see if I can actually tell a difference next time. I’ve tried it twice, though. Other than that, I’m happy with the performance of this formula! It is comfortably non-drying, transfer-proof, lasts several hours/all day (as I expect from liquid lipsticks), and opaquely pigmented.

Each Mystery Kit also comes with a little “Sephoji” pin, which is a little makeup/beauty-related enamel pin. The one I received in my lip kit says “I came, I saw, I contoured.”

The Verdict: I am smitten with these Sephora Favorites Mystery Kits! I think they are such a great idea for little gifts and stocking stuffers.  I’m thinking of giving them to as Christmas gifts to my friends who love makeup, and even a couple who are just getting into it or looking to be a little more adventurous.

  1. I made the mistake of picking this up at the Sephora inside JC penny’s. I didn’t read it just grabbed it.

It’s literally all rewards points and play items they’ve given away for $16 with a really ugly Sephora branded dirt brown shade.

I’m wondering if I can return bc I have the “special” shades, I got them all as perks. I haven’t opened them but I opened the bag. I didn’t understand that they have different items in JCP?

What do? I’m out $16 on stuff I have/won’t use

    • I think you should be able to return it. I’d definitely give it a try. Tell them straight up that you saw a review online and assumed it was the same kit…it seems like a bit of a bait and switch (whether intentional or not) to have a different one out there that isn’t listed online. I ordered the one here online this morning, and if they send me the other one I’m definitely returning it. The colors suck in that one.

  2. I’ve seen this advertised and wasn’t sure, but then I saw the colors swatched on your review and I really like them! Headed to my local JCP Sephora and found that they had an entirely different mystery lip bag in the store. It didn’t have the Kat Von D at all; it has a Sephora liquid lip in the Pink Tea color and Anastasia St. Tropez, and I think the Bite one in this was listed as one of the possible mystery product options. Anyhow, this particular one in your review is still showing on, so I’ll just get it online. But buyer beware- there are other variations lurking in the stores, so shop carefully!

  3. My local Sephora had these in stock and I was able to get the Nars which is what I wanted. All of the colors in the kit are beautiful and I bought it during the 20% off sale which was a double bonus 👄.

  4. I was told that the glitter flips have to dry completely before you press together. I have the black one, and it makes a big difference when I do it.

    • Thanks for the tip, Janet!! I’ll have to play with it more for sure.

  5. I kind of ignored this kit until I saw this post, the colors look great on you! I’ve added this to my shopping list for the 20% off sale this weekend. Thanks for the review!

    • That’s a good plan! Thanks for reading! 🙂

  6. Cute kit! I really like all of the colors that were included. I’ve seen pics of those Sephora pins, and I want them all!!!! 😀

    • I know! They’re so cute, right?? 😀

  7. Fun! Those kits seem like a great value. Every color is perfect for you, too! Great review.

    • Thank you very much! <3
