I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

Play! by Sephora #214 Review

Sephora Play November 2018 info

Each box comes with a foldable info sheet. The front always has a design related to the theme. This month, they offer a Holiday Survival Guide with lots of tips and fun infographics.

Sephora Play November 2018 play pass

Each box comes with a Play! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips of products from a Sephora consultant.

The opposite side of the info sheet has pictures of each item and details about what they are, how to use them, and why Sephora thinks you’ll love them.

Sephora Play November 2018 bag

Sephora Play October Box 795 monthly bag back

Every month they include all of the samples in a mini bag with a different design. This month’s bag is 100% recyclable and zips shut, which I like more than the typical drawstring bags. They’ve had these recyclable bags for a couple months now. If they’re the new normal, I’m happy!

Sephora Play November 2018 ceramidin

Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream, 5 mL – Estimated Value $4.80 (Buy a 1.69 oz/50 mL for $48)

This is a big favorite for many from Dr. Jart+. It is an ultra-hydrating cream that leaves my skin very happy and moisturized after using. It absorbs well without leaving any kind of residue on my skin. My makeup applies well over it, and I can use this either day or night.

Sephora Play November 2018 pep start

Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream, .1 oz – Estimated Value $5.30 (Buy a .5 oz full size for $26.50)

I always use eye cream morning and night. I’ve used this eye cream before, and I like it. It’s lightweight, hydrates well, and I see some brightening when I use this, too. My only gripe is that this sample tube was less than half full.

Sephora Play November 2018 moroccanoil

Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray, .67 fl oz – Estimated Value $5.12 (Buy 1.7 oz mini size for $13 or a 5.4 oz full-size for $30)

Leave-in products are another thing I use daily. I’ve never tried Moroccanoil’s before, but this is nice. A little goes a long way, and I only need a little in the ends of my hair to brush through and notice detangling, smoothing, and some added strength after blow-drying.

Sephora Play November 2018 lip cream

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in Pink Tea, .04 fl oz – Estimated Value $3.31 (Buy a .169 full-size for $14)

Sephora Collection’s Cream Lip Stains are quite good! They don’t feel drying but the staying power is great, and they dry to be transfer-resistant. This shade, Pink Tea, is one you’ll find in a lot of the sample sets of these lip creams. I am always for a neutral pink, but this particular color felt like it was much more neutral/beige than what I was expecting. It’s still a nice shade and I’ll wear it, but I’m not sure this shade will work well for everyone. (Also to clarify: they call it a “lip stain liquid lipstick” but to me, a true stain and liquid lipstick are two different things – this is a liquid lipstick, that you “paint” onto your lips and it dries down matte.)

Sephora Play November 2018 HD powder

Sephora Play November 2018 HD powder

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Microfinishing Powder, 1g – Estimated Value $5.00 (Buy a .14 oz. mini size for $20 or an 8.5 g/.29 oz full-size for $35)

I can honestly tell you this is the only setting powder I have used for about four years now. I bought a full-size while working at Sephora and use it to finish up every single time I wear makeup, and it’s still at least a third full still! A little goes a long way with this product so I know this sample will last for a while, even though it looks small. I love this powder because the actual powder bits are round so they diffuse light, making skin look slightly blurred with a natural finish. I notice the difference most in pictures, which makes sense because this product is designed for HD photography.

Sephora Play November 2018 tory burch

Sephora Play November 2018 tory burch 2

Tory Burch Just Like Heaven, .05 fl oz – Estimated Value $3.18 (Buy a 1.7 fl oz Full-Size for $108)

This fragrance is light and fresh, with floral and citrus notes, including hyacinth, heliotrope, Tonka Bean.

Verdict: This month’s Play! by Sephora box has an estimated value of $26.71, which isn’t the highest value I’ve received but still quite good for a $10 box. I enjoy my Sephora Play! boxes because they will always feature high-end brands. I love trying new things or getting extras of things I already love.

  1. This is a general help question please: With Sephora (which hasn’t sent me much in this category but I want to prevent getting it in the future), and other subscription boxes, I don’t want any hair care oils, sprays, etc. I always fill out the profiles and indicate what I really like (nail polish! skin care). Am I missing something obvious that I can do to help get more of what I want and less of what I don’t want? Thank you!

  2. Planning to cancel soon. So tired of the same nide lipstick of the same color. Do they know that nide can have various shades? They keep sending me this stuff like the matte lipstick above and i look like a corpse with it!

Or the purple one I got in the first boxes.
Purple? Seriously? That would be appropriate for October before Halloween!

Like come on. If you are that incredible and popular make up store, you HAVE to have variety. Don’t send people trash that no one is buying (apparently).

What do you have quizzes for then?

  3. Haley, your eye makeup is stunning, what products did you use?😍

    • Thank you, Jenn! In this picture I’m wearing the Love of Color liquid shimmer shadow in Aurora – I got in in my Birchbox this month! And also used a crease shade from the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette. Mascara is Benefit’s Bad Gal Bang. 💕

      • Thank you so much! I have a similar eye color and I love the way yours pop! Have a great evening! 🙂

    • Oh, and I’m also wearing Urban Decay eyeliner in Corrupt.

  4. I’m so done with sephora play! Why They can’t give us a Full size lipstick from THEIR own Brand? 😑

    • Exactly! Such a small sample! It’s not even half the size of the tube. SMH!

  5. I received the same box and I liked everything except the lip color. I look awful in these pale shades, but boxes keep sending them out.

    • Agreed! I tried it on. I looked like a cadaver. I promptly threw it away. LOL. But they accidentally sent me 2 of the Dr Jart samples, so I still came out even I think. 🙂

      • Totally agree – was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the rest of the box. Hated the lip color.

      • I have rarely hated any product as much as I hate that lip cream. The color made me look like a corpse, too. Also, when it dried on my lips it accentuated every line in a very unflattering way. I sure hope I never get one of those again.

  6. This was my first Play! box and I was disappointed. The perfume sample was half full like it was already used. The lip gloss was super tiny. I get bigger samples from Birchbox and Ipsy. Needless to say, I cancelled after one month.

  7. I liked my box this time. I did not get the Moroccan oil leave in conditioner rather the OUAI which had a VERY strong musky smell. It gave me a headache after a few hours. BUT i loved everything else. Laura Mercer setting powder, grande lip plumper, eye cream, purity face wash. didn’t care for the perfume again to musky BUT will stick in one of my friends’ gift for Christmas.

  8. This wasn’t my favorite box. I got the same one you reviewed. I got to try the Dr. Jart cream which I Really liked, and fell in love with the perfume!

  9. On my lips, those colors look like shades of concealers. I’m so tired of getting them. Please start sending berries, wines, something of a different colors.

    • I prefer those color families, too!

  10. I got a similar box (I think I got the Christopher Robin mask instead of the morrocan oil spray and a different perfume) and that lip sample is crazy small! It was a bit disappointing, especially since the other variation was Grande Lips and I generally like those. Overall it was a decent box but I’m on the fence about staying. I like deluxe size samples because they are great for make-up on the go, but this was basically just a step above a blister sample card size wise.

  11. That lip stain was the smallest sample of a liquid lipstick I think I’ve ever seen…and it just seems a bit more lame that it’s a relatively inexpensive Sephora brand. But as the review said, the color wasn’t my favorite anyways so I guess it’s all for the best.

    • Exactly! So ridiculous!
