The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club September 2018 Review

A detailed newsletter is included each month where you can read about the two featured breweries and the beer that you will find in your box. The newsletter really provides more education on each beer and the background of the breweries, which is awesome. The featured breweries for September are Dominion Brewing Company in Dover, DE, and Shmaltz Brewing Company out of Clifton Park, NY. Let’s try these beers, eh?

Dominion Brewing Co. Candi Belgian Tripel

Dominion Brewing Co. Candi Belgian Tripel

Belgian tripels can really vary from brewery to brewery, but they all have one thing in common - they’re strong! This one, in particular, is 10.0% alcohol by volume, or ABV for short. That’s about as strong as I like a beer if I’m just sipping on one while watching hockey in the evenings. This had a nice balanced flavor of some sweetness, a little bit of spice, and some pear like they mentioned in its description. Tripels usually pair well with game meats, so this would be awesome with a venison roast, or with a huuuge cheese and charcuterie platter!

Dominion Brewing Co. Morning Glory Espresso Stout

Ahh, espresso stout! One of my very favorite varieties of beer of all time, I was thrilled to see this in the box. Like most stouts, this was also a little higher on the alcohol content at 8.0% ABV. It was extremely rich-tasting to me, and had a lighter, almost sour-tasting finish - but it wasn't a bad thing! The lighter finishing note kept it from being too heavy. I imagine this would be amazing with a fruity and chocolatey dessert, maybe Black Forest Cake?

Shmaltz Messiah Nut Brown Ale

Shmaltz Messiah Nut Brown Ale

This nut brown was my husband’s favorite of the entire box! He tends to like beers on the darker side of the spectrum, and he likes brown ales as a rule. This one clocked in at the lowest ABV of the box - 5.2%. I thought it had a nice hearty complexity and almost a caramel-like finish. It wasn’t too sweet, but I detected a light vanilla finish. This would be delicious on through the holidays - I can totally see pairing this with a German-style supper of brats and potatoes, or maybe with a sticky toffee pudding!

Shmaltz Brewing Company No Schtick Hoppy Ale

I’m going to make a confession: even though I love beer, I’m not a huge fan of hops. (I know, being a craft beer fan, this might be hard to believe, but I’m sorry, readers - I don’t like IPA’s!) I experienced a bit of trepidation towards this brew when I opened the box, but I’m pleased to report that I actually ended up enjoying this beer very much! It wasn’t bitter and intensely dry like hop-forward beers can be, but the hops drove that ABV up - this brew was also at 8.0%. It had a clean, crisp finish and was really refreshing. I bet this would be great with grilled meats or nachos!

Here’s a collage of all this month’s brews, for color comparison!

Verdict: I enjoyed this The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club box so, so much! This was something great to share with my husband; we have slightly different beer tastes, but we always agree - tasting different things is always the best part! I loved the espresso stout and he loved the nut brown, but we both really appreciated the chance to try the tripel and the hoppy ale. I’d never heard of these breweries before, and I’m fairly familiar with the brewing world, so having a smaller company’s wares curated for me really added to the value of this box. I also love the format - three of four different types of beer is awesome, and I loved that they were such a nice variety from each other. My only complaint in the whole box was the bosomed damsels on two of the labels - I wasn’t crazy about the overly doe-eyed renderings of women on the beers.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? September is no longer available. You are able to choose which month you'd like to start with (the earliest option is currently November).

Value Breakdown: This box costs $42.95 a month including the shipping cost. I received a total of 12 beers which is a value of $3.57 per bottle of beer, much less than you would pay for these beers if you ordered them at a pub. Plus, the overall curation and exclusivity of each brewery is where I really see the value each month, not to mention the home delivery!
