September 2018 “First Day of School” Doki Doki by Japan Crate Review

The illustration on the cover of this month’s pamphlet is adorable! I also love reading the comic strip on the back cover.

“First Day of School” is the theme for this month – all of Fall always makes me think of back-to-school season, which I always adored as a kid, so let’s see if these items give me some happy nostalgia.

My Melody Onigiri Maker

The first item is one that goes hand-in-hand with school days (or work days) – prepping for the next day’s lunch! I was lucky enough to have my mom pack my lunch for me as a kid, and now as an adult, I really appreciate having a nice lunch to get through the day. This onigiri maker completely kawaii-ifys rice and makes it an adorable element to what could be an otherwise boring sack lunch.

Amuse Pen

Pens are one of my favorite things to receive in a box because they’re always so useful! The Amuse characters are really cute, but what I really like is how easy the red color will be to spot in my purse, as well as the nice fine point of the tip – it gives me so much control when writing!

Sumikko Gurashi Pen Case

So many Sumikko gurashi friends adorn this case – the scene here totally reminds me of my friends who were in marching band. Pen cases are nice because they can carry so much more than just office supplies; for example, I think I’m going to use this li’l guy to corral some of my eyeshadow brushes.

Aggretsuko Plush Charm

I’m usually introduced to a number of awesome characters through these boxes, but I think that Aggretsuko is the one I relate to the most. I’ve loved red pandas since childhood, but the idea that this character, Retsuko, copes with life by singing death metal karaoke at night, speaks to my soul. She works in an office and just tries to get through the day – I feel you, girl. I received her everyday face, but I’ll be thinking heavy metal thoughts every time I look at it!

Jinesban Folder

I’m a secret folder fiend. I’m not always the most organized person, but I sure try to be through my love of office supplies! The Jinbesan character is a really unique one – he was the winner of a character contest, and just happens to be a whale-shark. How cool is that? I like the translucent quality of this folder, too – it means I can see the contents at a glance!

Verdict: Doki Doki gave a nice helping of office supplies, for sure, but I could’ve used a little more zip this month! Although I appreciated what was in the box, I would’ve liked to see a few higher-value items in this month’s box, and definitely would’ve liked to see some more unique items, like the onigiri maker. I use pens a lot, but for a super-fun box theme like this one, I’d rather receive items that are more unique to Kawaii culture! However, the theme was pretty much on-point, I love the plush charm, and I think the other items will be used pretty regularly. I’m curious to see what next month will bring!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Not this one. Orders close at 11:59 pm PST on the last day of the month. Any orders placed after then will be dated as the 1st of the following month. Check out the most recent spoilers here!

Coupon – Use coupon code MSA3 to save $3 off your first Japan Crate Premium, Doki Doki Crate, Umai Crate, or Kira Kira Crate!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $30 + free shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box has an average cost of $6.

  1. Wow DokiDoki has really gone downhill. I used to subscribe and I absolutely loved it. They sent me a t-shirt every month and a bunch of awesome kawaii items. Then they moved to Japan and have been terrible ever since. Look at the items you get for $30. What a rip off. You are WAY better off going with the Sanrio gift crate or even Kawaii box or even better yume twins. I dont know what happened to these guys but man they are terrible. This box is shameful. $12 at the Blippo store could have gotten you all this and more.
