Bling Bag is a jewelry subscription from India. Each month you’ll receive jewelry customized to your personal style (you fill out a quiz at sign-up). There are several subscription packages available with different quantities of items.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Bling Bag October 2018 “Festober” Review

You choose from four types of jewelry to receive (you have to pick at least two). I chose to receive necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Rings are also available.

There was an information card talking about the monthly theme. All packages may be different so you also get individual cards with the items you receive (see below).

This month’s theme relates to festive times in India. The people behind Bling Bag told me that this season is a little bit like Christmas would be in the US and that Navaratri (going on now, until October 18) is one of the main festivals; Diwali is also upcoming (in November). So there is lots of dressing up and dancing and visiting friends and family and this month’s collection is meant to reflect that.

Black and Gold Wristlet/Clutch

Every month, your jewelry is packaged in a small bag. I’ve received clutches and wristlets before, as well as wallets, crossbody pouches, and similar. This one is a lightweight fabric and is big enough to fit a few essentials if you don’t want to be burdened with a huge purse.

Gohar Dangler Earrings – Retail Value $12.19 (899 rupees)

As I mentioned earlier, you choose at least two categories of items so if you don’t want earrings, you won’t receive any. All the earrings I have received are pierced. I do not know what metal the posts are made of, but I remember reading that it is nickel free. I tried these without coating the posts and they did not bother my ears, but if you are sensitive, you can always put some clear nail polish over the posts before wearing.

These are lightweight despite the length and they are nice and shiny. I can definitely see how you might wear them when dressing up for a party or other festivities. The relatively neutral colors mean you can pair these with various outfits and get more wear out of them. This is the type of piece I have come to expect from Bling Bag and also a type of item I appreciate getting since this is definitely not something I could make for myself.

Myra Adjustable Bracelet – Listed Value $8.12 (599 rupees)

This is an interesting bracelet. Instead of a clasp, it is more like memory wire (but fancy memory wire with side loops) so it adjusts to many different wrist sizes without getting bent out of shape and without being too tight or too loose. I don’t think I’ve seen a bracelet like this before and I think it’s a really clever idea. This could stand on its own or you could stack it with some other bracelets. You can also see this month’s bag in the last photo for size context.

Oriana Detachable Stud – Listed Value About $9.48 (699 rupees)

These are super versatile. (FYI, it was almost dark outside when we took these pictures so there are some odd shadows inside my ears…) You get two pairs of studs, with one set being more of a decorative arch and one set being some simple rectangles. You also get two dangles. There are so many ways to wear these; I’ve shown you two possibilities above. You can put the dangles in front or in back of your ear, you can switch out the studs, you can leave the dangles off, you can orient the arches either up or down, or if you have multiple piercings, you can wear both pairs simultaneously (I used to have more piercings in my earlobes but most of them closed up when I didn’t wear earrings for a few months after I had surgery last year). These are also very lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Sangam Adjustable Necklace – Listed Value About $13.55 (999 rupees)

And here is this month’s necklace. I have received a necklace with a sliding clasp like this before from Bling Bag and I think it’s great. It takes a little effort to adjust but that means it doesn’t change length on you too easily. You can make it shorter or longer to work with the neckline of whatever you’re wearing. There is a little bit of movement in the pendant as the green stone can slide from side to side in the ring. This one could also work with several different colors of top; as it happens I have two solid green dresses so I have ample occasions to wear this. This one is fancy, but I think definitely suitable for work in a business casual sort of environment as well.

For the record, I am willing to wear pretty much any metal tone so if I have not commented on that, it’s because I don’t have a preference. All the pieces come in cute little bags so if something is not to your taste, it is easy to gift it. All the stones were securely in place, as always, and all the clasps and hinges worked.

Verdict: The Bling Bag subscription costs about $27.65 at the current exchange rate, including shipping. For that cost, you get four pieces of jewelry plus the clutch/wristlet, which I think is a pretty good deal. The total value works out to around $43.34 minus the clutch for which I couldn’t find a value, which is indeed more than the subscription price. I can easily believe that the bag makes brings this to the “double the subscription price” that Bling Bag promises. (What you receive might be different based on your answers to the quiz.) I did feel that everything was of better quality than expected considering the price (this is definitely fashion jewelry, as opposed to fine jewelry). Also, packaging was excellent; my Bling Bag boxes take a beating on the way from India to the US but everything inside always arrives in excellent shape.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? As of publication, they are still offering October boxes on their website, but your items may vary depending on your choices in the profile quiz.

Value Breakdown: At about $27.65 for this box (including shipping), you are paying
approximately the following per item:

  • Clutch/wristlet (unknown and not used in calculations)
  • Gohar earrings $7.78
  • Myra bracelet $5.18
  • Oriana earrings $6.05
  • Sangam necklace $8.64

This looks so beautiful every time I see it and I really want it.

However, when I tried to order it, none of My American credit cards would go through their system. I really wanted to use my Amex, and the site says they take it, but when you click through to their payment facilitator, they don’t. If Blingbag is reading this, please get a Paypal account so I can buy. I think a lot of people also feel more comfortable with Paypal if they are buying from outside America.

I haven’t read anything from anyone who has actually purchased this to see if they have the same difficulties I have.

There were recently some changes in Indian banking regulations that require all data collected on people in India to be stored on servers in India. I know this has caused a huge hassle with credit card processors and international merchants and I wonder if it isn’t having an effect on transactions going the other way as well. I agree, PayPal would be a good option and it is definitely possible to set up recurring transactions there.

Thanks. It’s too bad because I really like the looks of this sub and have tried several times to purchase it, based off your reviews.
