Birchbox The Makeup Made Easy Kit Review
Here is the info sheet detailing the products included.
Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling & Lifting Mascara, 0.1 oz – Estimated Value $8 (buy the full-size version for $24)
I have used this mascara before and I really like it! It has tiny hooks on the wand that reach each and every lash and help them to curl and lengthen. This doesn’t give me the volume I crave, but I am a believer in using two different mascaras for best results anyway.
M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream in Pinklite, 0.2 oz – Estimated Value $4 (buy the full-size version for $34)
This is a lightly tinted cream that can be used as a moisturizer, a highlighter, or as a cream to blend with your foundation for a lit from within glow. This gives more of a natural highlight rather than one that can be seen from space, but I like the versatility of it.
Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black, 0.04 oz – Estimated Value $12.57 (buy the full-size version for $22)
Birchbox really seems to have a love affair with Eyeko - I am always getting new Eyeko eyeliners from them. This gets the job done, but nothing about it is groundbreaking to me.
Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Portofino, 0.05 oz – Estimated Value $11 (buy the full-size version for $22)
Stila Liquid Lipsticks are up there near the top for favorite liquid lipsticks for me, and this Portofino shade is a new one to me that I am absolutely in love with. It is described as a pink rose, and I think it is a really universally flattering shade. I recommend using an oil on your lips while you’re doing your makeup (I use this one), and then right before its time to apply your lipstick wipe it off. This should help with any dryness that liquid lipsticks usually bring!
Winky Lux Strobing Balm Cream Highlighter in Radiant Pink, 0.05 oz – Estimated Value $7.27 (buy the full-size version for $7.27)
Winky Lux seriously has the cutest packaging, and this pink-tinted highlighter has a cream formulation that makes blending a cinch. A little goes a long way, and if you have oily skin I wouldn't apply this to places that are usually oily.
Love of Color One & Done Shadow Stick in Out of Your Shell, Full-Size! Retail Value $10
I am no stranger to Birchbox’s line of shadow sticks—they’re creamy and apply smoothly. I like this pearly white shade for highlighting the inner corners of my eyes, and it is also easy to blend before it fully sets if you want to diffuse the color.
Love of Color Sharpener – Retail Value $5
This sharpener can fit three different pencil sizes and it comes with a small pick for cleaning out crevices in the sharpener. It gets the job done and the price can't be beaten!
Here are the swatches. From top to bottom we have the liner, the shadow stick, the lipstick, the winky lux, and the mac strobe cream.
Here I am wearing everything in the box, as well as some brow gel and my powder foundation. I used the Love of Color Shadow stick on my lower lash line and the inner corners, and I used the Winky Lux highlighter on the rest of my eyelid as well as on the apples of my cheeks. I used the Mac strobe cream under my foundation as well as right above the Winky Lux on my cheekbones. Overall, I was really happy with how it looked! Unfortunately, I did forget to use a primer and about five hours later my mascara and eyeliner had smeared on my under-eyes. Definitely use primers if you're going to use either the Roller Lash or Eyeko eyeliner!
The Verdict: I think this discovery kit lived up to its promise— using the products in the kit really takes only a few steps for a full makeup look! My favorites were the Winky Lux highlighter and the Stila lipstick, but I think the overall curation was really well done. Birchbox promises a value of $57, and by my math, they came out above that with a total value of $57.84.
