Birchbox The Makeup Made Easy Kit Review

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Product Info Sheet Front

Here is the info sheet detailing the products included.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara Box Front Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara Front Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara Open Front

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling & Lifting Mascara,  0.1 oz – Estimated Value $8 (buy the full-size version for $24)

I have used this mascara before and I really like it! It has tiny hooks on the wand that reach each and every lash and help them to curl and lengthen. This doesn’t give me the volume I crave, but I am a believer in using two different mascaras for best results anyway.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream Front

M·A·C Cosmetics Strobe Cream in Pinklite, 0.2 oz – Estimated Value $4 (buy the full-size version for $34)

This is a lightly tinted cream that can be used as a moisturizer, a highlighter, or as a cream to blend with your foundation for a lit from within glow. This gives more of a natural highlight rather than one that can be seen from space, but I like the versatility of it.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner Front Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner Open Side

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Black, 0.04 oz – Estimated Value $12.57 (buy the full-size version for $22)

Birchbox really seems to have a love affair with Eyeko - I am always getting new Eyeko eyeliners from them. This gets the job done, but nothing about it is groundbreaking to me.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Stila Cosmetics Liquid Lipstick Front Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Stila Cosmetics Liquid Lipstick Open Front

Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Portofino, 0.05 oz – Estimated Value $11 (buy the full-size version for $22)

Stila Liquid Lipsticks are up there near the top for favorite liquid lipsticks for me, and this Portofino shade is a new one to me that I am absolutely in love with. It is described as a pink rose, and I think it is a really universally flattering shade. I recommend using an oil on your lips while you’re doing your makeup (I use this one), and then right before its time to apply your lipstick wipe it off. This should help with any dryness that liquid lipsticks usually bring!

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Winky Lux Strobing Balm Cream Highlighter Top Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Winky Lux Strobing Balm Cream Highlighter Open Top

Winky Lux Strobing Balm Cream Highlighter in Radiant Pink, 0.05 oz – Estimated Value $7.27 (buy the full-size version for $7.27)

Winky Lux seriously has the cutest packaging, and this pink-tinted highlighter has a cream formulation that makes blending a cinch. A little goes a long way, and if you have oily skin I wouldn't apply this to places that are usually oily.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Love of Color Shadow Stick Front Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Love of Color Shadow Stick Open Front

Love of Color One & Done Shadow Stick in Out of Your Shell, Full-Size! Retail Value $10

I am no stranger to Birchbox’s line of shadow sticks—they’re creamy and apply smoothly. I like this pearly white shade for highlighting the inner corners of my eyes, and it is also easy to blend before it fully sets if you want to diffuse the color.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Love of Color Sharpener Top Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018 - Love of Color Sharpener Open Top

Love of Color Sharpener – Retail Value $5

This sharpener can fit three different pencil sizes and it comes with a small pick for cleaning out crevices in the sharpener. It gets the job done and the price can't be beaten!

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018- Shadow Stick Swatch Front

Here are the swatches. From top to bottom we have the liner, the shadow stick, the lipstick, the winky lux, and the mac strobe cream.

Birchbox Makeup Made Easy October 2018- Selfie

Here I am wearing everything in the box, as well as some brow gel and my powder foundation. I used the Love of Color Shadow stick on my lower lash line and the inner corners, and I used the Winky Lux highlighter on the rest of my eyelid as well as on the apples of my cheeks. I used the Mac strobe cream under my foundation as well as right above the Winky Lux on my cheekbones. Overall, I was really happy with how it looked! Unfortunately, I did forget to use a primer and about five hours later my mascara and eyeliner had smeared on my under-eyes. Definitely use primers if you're going to use either the Roller Lash or Eyeko eyeliner!

The Verdict: I think this discovery kit lived up to its promise— using the products in the kit really takes only a few steps for a full makeup look! My favorites were the Winky Lux highlighter and the Stila lipstick, but I think the overall curation was really well done. Birchbox promises a value of $57, and by my math, they came out above that with a total value of $57.84.

The Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if I sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this box is still available!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $22 + $5 shipping and I calculated a value of $57.84. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Benefit Mascara: $3.73
  • Mac Strobe Cream: $1.87
  • Eyeko Liner: $5.87
  • Stila Lipstick: $5.13
  • Winky Lux Highlighter: $3.39
  • LOC Shadow Stick: $4.67
  • Sharpener: $2.33

I pretty much have all of it.

while these are nice products. This kit doesn’t interest me to due to the fact as of Oct. I own every single product from this kit bc each of these products made it into my monthly box.

But, I do recommend this to anyone interested in trying these products bc they’re nice.

Jessica your review makes me SO excited over the fact I chose the Winky Lux highlighter during October sample choice! Can’t wait now.

I don’t think anyone who has had any makeup or lifestyle box will ever need to buy an Eyeko eye liner in their lifetime.

Isn’t that the truth! Lol

I would not need two different highlighters in this set. A different item would make more sense to me. But I’m assuming they have to push certain products and keep to certain price points to make it profitable.

Oh look, an Eyeko eyeliner! : ) Some of these boxes need to partner up with other eyeliner makers. I’m starting to be a believer in Eyeko eyeliner conspiracy theories lol.

Thanks for the review, Jessica!

I picked out that shade of Stila when they were the weekly special on Sephora just recently and LOVE it. It looks great on you too. And this may be a dumb question but when you suggest to use a primer for the eyeliner and mascara do you mean a face/eye primer or a lash primer? I have super oily lids and always use a lid primer for my shadow and it seems to help prevent my mascara run too. But I was just wondering if mascara primers help with that also or just help add volume? I’ve never tried one…

Hey Jessica, I think you meant to make a link to the oil you use on your lips, but it doesn’t show up.
