Accio! October 2018 “Potions” Review
The info card for this box is always an “issue” of the Daily Prophet, and it explains all the delights about to be discovered within! This month’s theme is “Potions,” so let’s throw on our school robes and race down to the dungeons because class is in session!
Liquid Luck Tee - Listed Value $25
These tee shirts are usually box-exclusives, and they’re always super, super soft! This one advertises Felix Felicis as if were a marketable product, and I wish it were! It’s a famously hard-to-brew potion, but I don’t know anyone who couldn’t use the good luck it offers. Hopefully, this black tee will offer a similar streak of luck - is that glow-in-the-dark ink I spy in the design?
Skele-Gro Enamel Pin - Listed Value $10
I’m growing my enamel pin collection quite nicely, and happily, so many of my pins now are Harry Potter-themed! This one is really unique and I love it especially because it’s completely immersed in the fandom. Either fellow fans will see it and get it, or it will go unnoticed by those who have not yet visited Hogwarts! I love the design on this - it looks just like the potion from the Potterverse.
Pepperup Potion Shower Steamer - Listed Value $5
It’s only mid-October, but I’ve already gotten a nasty cold - and since my husband got it, too, we’re both taking a little longer to get better than I would like! This shower steamer is an absolute lifesaver; it smells delicious, and it’s perfect for keeping my sinuses open right now as the weather keeps getting colder. This portion was big enough that I was able to put it in for my shower, and have my husband hop in right after me to use it, too! It smells so good, and it was the perfect thing to tide us over until we get our flu shots.
Potions Master Measuring Spoon Set - Listed Value $8
Would you believe I didn’t already own measuring spoons? I was thrilled to see these in the box - I can literally take them off my Christmas list! This was the house-themed item for the month and it really worked out for me; these dark blue Ravenclaw ones look awesome in my mostly-grey kitchen. I like the measurement markings and how they nest together for easy storage. They’re an unexpected but appropriate item for the theme, and they perfectly complement the Death Star measuring cups that I already own.
Pop Soap Potion-Inspired Bars - Retail Value $8
When the box arrived, I swear it smelled good even on the outside, thanks to this awesome vegan soap! There were two possible scents to receive, and I got the Amortentia one, rather than the Felix Felicis. Mine is named for a very strong love potion in the wizarding world, and lists ashwinder egg and rose thorn, which is two of the fictional potion’s ingredients. It’s citrus-scented, and packed with three types of plant-based oils, making this product both totally vegan and super-gentle on my skin.
Verdict: I was extremely curious to see what Accio! would do for October’s box, and the Potions theme was an unexpected and awesome idea for this most-spooky month! The items this month are a listed value of $56, which is slightly lower than last month, but I think the listed values for each item were better estimated, and the bath products this month were so useful, but not something I would’ve thought to buy for myself. The tee shirt is an often-included item, but I don’t really mind because they always vary so widely in both color and theme. The fact that this box sources items from small businesses is probably my favorite aspect of the subscription - I get introduced to lots of artists that love the same fandom as I do, and that makes the items even more fun to receive!
