Whiskerbox September 2018 “High As A Kitty” Review

One thing that’s great about Whiskerbox is the items are usually off the beaten path when it comes to cat subscriptions – you don’t see these anywhere else! Let’s see what was in store this month:

Whiskerbox September 2018 Booklet Front Whiskerbox September 2018 Booklet Back

This month we are back to a standard information card with a list of items on the back.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Hat

Personalized Cat Apparel from Cat Couture – Listed Value $35

This has a hand-knitted feel to it (and it appears to be made from worsted weight or chunky-type yarn). I do not know what type of animal this is, though? Anyway, I always have fun putting these on my cats. (Well, on Madison, Monkey, and Mr. Kitty. I can’t usually get them on Angus and Sneaky.)

Whiskerbox September 2018 Glasses

Retro Sunglasses from Cat Couture – Listed Value $15

My cats were a little less keen on these than on the hat. Except for Monkey. Monkey looked pretty cool in them. You can see some examples below.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Catnip

Certified Organic Catnip from House of Cat – Listed Value $10

This is from a Canadian Etsy seller and there is no plain catnip listed in their shop right now, just valerian and a catnip/valerian mix. So I’ve used the value from the information card, though it seems a bit steep. Monkey enjoyed this right out of the bag but I will be using the bulk of it to refresh all of our various cardboard scratchers.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Puff

Party Puff Catnip Toy from Stark Raving Cat – Listed Value $10

I can’t find this on the Stark Raving Cat site or Etsy shop, so I’ve again used the value from the information card. This is handmade but seems pretty securely put together (as in, no one has been able to destroy it so far). My kitties were mostly interested in the feather, but that is not surprising in the least.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Angus 1 Whiskerbox September 2018 Angus 2

Angus sniffs a few things from the box. I tried to get him into the hat but that was a no-go.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Madison 1 Whiskerbox September 2018 Madison 2 Whiskerbox September 2018 Madison 3

I had to trap Madison in the bathroom to get these things on him. He was not amused.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Sneaky 1

Sneaky says “no” to the glasses.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Sneaky 2 Whiskerbox September 2018 Sneaky 3

Sneaky with some of the other items from the box.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Monkey 1

Monkey sniffed the catnip. Then he started licking it.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Monkey 2 Whiskerbox September 2018 Monkey 3

Monkey in the hat.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Monkey 4 Whiskerbox September 2018 Monkey 5

Monkey looking stylish in the sunglasses. If you wonder why the angles are odd, I was down on the floor with him.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Sparkles 1

Mr. Kitty in the glasses. You can’t even tell he is missing an eye.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Sparkles 2

Mr. Kitty investigates the catnip.

Whiskerbox September 2018 Sparkles 3

And here he is in the hat. I think he was sleepy. But in general, he is doing much better since he started insulin.

Verdict: I could not calculate an independent value for the September 2018 Whiskerbox. None of the items were available for retail purchase on the web so every value up above is from the information card. I would say, these are typical contents for this box – one piece of apparel, a toy, and a few other items that could fall into several categories (treats, catnip, more toys, etc.). If anyone has any ideas what the hat is supposed to be, please let me know in the comments. It is funny regardless of what it is. My cats enjoyed the toy and the catnip, and I got a kick out of the other items. I also appreciate finding out about some smaller/independent makers.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Whiskerbox ships on the 15th of the month so if you sign up before then (assuming they haven’t sold out), you would get October’s box as your first box.

Value Breakdown: At $49.95 for this box, the per-item average value is about $12.49.

  1. 100% thought shark that needs some flattening. Oh my word though. The kittie sunglass pictures are AMAZING. And I work with animals everyday. Totally made my day.

  2. Those glasses are the bomb, but my kids would not be happy.

  3. YOUR. KITTY. PHOTOS. ARE. EVERYTHING!! Totally made my day. I’m thinking the hat is maybe a shark?

    • So the shark thing crossed my mind, but they sent a different shark hat in the March box, so it would be a little weird to get a second.

The top part has a couple of fin-like or horn-like projections, that kind of make me think of a rhinoceros or triceratops, but they’re too far back on the head for that, and the teeth aren’t right for either of those, so maybe it *is* a shark, and we just get two shark hats this year?

  4. kitties in sunglasses!!!! as usual, i love the photos! great review! 🙂

  5. Monkey and Mr Kitty are stylin in those glasses! Love
