Unique Vintage August 2018 Review

You never quite know what you’re going to get with this subscription.  It could be a party dress or one that you could wear to work.  Let’s see what I got this month:

Unique Vintage 1940s Style Teal Plaid Short Sleeve Erwin Shirtdress – Retail Value $110

I was encouraged when I saw the fabric composition since this is 70% cotton, 25% polyester, and 5% spandex. This means there is a little stretch to the fabric, which is so important to these dresses fitting me around the midsection (I have an XS top/hips and a M waist, and I order S and hope for the best).

Well. This did button up nicely, but whenever I bent my torso, a gap opened up between the two buttons surrounding my stomach (so I probably look like I am sucking in my stomach here, to keep that from happening in the picture). Because the dress fits well otherwise (and is cute, and work-appropriate, and an excellent weight for this time of year), I have ordered some snaps and will sew them into place to keep that gap closed. (I mean, I am also doing ab exercises since I had open abdominal surgery last year, but that takes longer and a waist less than 28 inches may not be in the cards for my body type regardless of the amount of work I put in.)

This is how far out the skirt goes. This is not really a petticoat dress. But it does have pockets!

Verdict: The dress I received has a retail price of $110, which is one of the best values I’ve seen from this subscription. The style is also cute and great for fall (in the South) office wear. Also, this one is machine washable! (That is a major score for Unique Vintage dresses.) I just need to put the snaps in to keep the middle closed and I will be all set.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, all boxes ship out at the same time of the month so it’s too late to get the August shipment. However, if you like the dress, you can order it from the link above. (Sign up for their email list; they have coupons and sales every now and then.)

Value Breakdown: This subscription costs $57 if you include shipping and you get one dress.

  1. The dress gapped so badly for me between those buttons! Full on belly overflow. This was my first dress of the month shipment (which took 30 days to get to me) and I promptly sent it back. Great value, but terrible look on me. Nice to see it on a different body though! It looks great on you!

    • I got my snaps in from Amazon so I just have to sew them in place and it should work. I may have my mom do it when she visits next month because she is better at that kind of thing than I am.

  2. Ragan You look Beautiful it is a smart style on you love it.

  3. I love the mix of sold and plaid and the pockets. The shade of green would not be my choice but if they are trying to accurately produce a vintage dress then that would be the correct shade of green. P.S. I don’t know why you have a problem with your waist—Scarlett O’Hara’s waist was only 17 inches!!!!!

  4. You look great in the style and cut of this dress. I am not too keen on the pattern and color, but that is just a personal preference. When I see these dress reviews I am always wanting them because they look so good on you! I know they wouldn’t look like this on me, lol. I know you say your waist is bigger, but if you didn’t comment on that, I would never notice that looking at you. I think your figure is fantastic!

    • The waist size thing is only a problem because I don’t fit neatly into any of their XS/S/M bins. I just don’t have that hourglass figure thing going for me.

  5. I actually love the dress and the mix of fabric. You look great!

  6. I’ve never seen a dress like this. The fabric choices are so…unique. Ragan, you look great in it. If it were me though, I’d be sending that one back based on fabric.

  7. I wasn’t expecting this dress to be so polarizing. My first thought was early seasons Peggy Olson from Mad Men, so I’m a fan.

  8. Looks like they ran out of fabric and grabbed the cheapest piece they could find.

  9. I like the cut and color of the dress but I don’t get the mix of fabric. It works but I feel like one color or one pattern would look a lot better.

  10. I’m sorry, the dress is awful.

    • It doesn’t compliment her at all. The cut nor the color. Maybe if it was more of a softer green and sleeveless?

      • I don’t like wearing sleeveless anything. If I get something sleeveless, I wear a shrug or a cardigan. Although they are kind of an odd length here.

    • I’m a subscriber and I returned mine. Plus the area where the hips meet the waist is unflatteringly cut and looks boxy. The fabric is thin.

  11. Hi Ragan – Love this dress! Do all who subscribe get the same dress each month?

    • As far as I know, yes. When I go look up the dresses each month, the styles seem to be available in both regular and plus sizes, and past comments on the reviews indicate others have received the same one.

      • Curious why it’s called “Unique” if everyone gets the same… It does look nice on you!

        • “Unique Vintage” is the name of the company.

  12. You look great, but the dress isn’t great. It would be pretty in all the same plaid fabric or the teal alone. Now, it’s a franken-dress.

    • Hahaha! Franken-dress🤣🤣🤣

  13. That dress looks great on you!
