Green Piñata August 2018 Review
My son, Fox, is 2-years-old and very active. Let’s see what toys this month’s Green Piñata brought:
Mini Monster Game of Skill by Haba – Retail Value $15.49
This game notes that it is for kids from 2 to 3 years of age, but I think this game seems pretty hard for that age range. What you want to do is “feed” the monster the balls by spinning the game piece to get all balls in each hole (other known as the monster’s mouth). My son gravitated towards this game first, most likely because of the cool monsters, but quickly became frustrated and moved onto the next thing. I have kept this out for him to try and we have shown him, but he has not taken to it much. Even at 2 and a half, I think this game that is meant to focus on cognitive and fine motor skills might be a bit tricky just yet.
Clickety Clack Clapper by Hape – Retail Value $25.14
These are little castanets that are made to fit your little one’s hands! They make a fun clicking sound when you press them together. These are fun to use to make music or to dance with. Fox loved dancing with these in his hands around the house. This toy is meant to help your little one with their fine motor skills as well as building their creativity!
These sets are always fun to play with! The story matches the character set so my son can continue the story with the farmer and his tractor even after we are done reading. This can be a toy that is a bit “short-lived” as far as my son’s attention span goes so I don’t think it is one that I would ever purchase at the store, but that is why this box is so great! We can read the story a few times and play with the figures before sending it back for a new set right around the time that my son decides he isn’t as interested in it anymore.
Teddy’s Colors and Shapes by Haba – Retail Value $17.99
This game is meant to help build your little one’s cognitive and social skills. I always love receiving a beginners boardgame because it really helps my son learn how to take turns and to play games. I am going to be honest here, I found the instructions on how to play to be a bit confusing even after we read over it a few times. It comes with two dice that you have to roll as well which my son was not interested in rolling both to select shape and color. That could just be his age and attention span though whereas another child might really enjoy! We decided to just take turns selecting a shape, identifying it and the color before placing it into one of the puzzle pieces. This was a fun and interactive way to play and to get my son focusing on his shapes and colors.
Verdict: Green Piñata was a bit of a miss this month for us in terms of toys that Fox really engaged with. He will typically play with his new box of toys for some time and then come back to them again day after day, but he really only played with these a few times here and there. That’s not a problem though since this is a rental box and we can quickly send these back for a fresh new box of toys! That is really where I see the value because we are never just stuck with something that we aren’t going to use, I am just going to pass these back into my free shipping return box and wait for our next box.
