Darn Good Beads of the Month is a monthly subscription for jewelry makers from Darn Good Yarn. (You don’t have to be able to knit or crochet for this subscription!) Every month you’ll receive materials to complete a quick beading project. You will need some basic tools of your own (pliers, crimping pliers, glue) but they provide all the findings, beads, and stringing materials!

This month's box is being reviewed thanks to an MSA reader request!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Darn Good Beads of the Month August 2018 Review

I’ve been receiving Darn Good Beads of the Month for just a few months. I know I will get a simple project with instructions that will be easy to complete in an hour or two, but the projects have been pretty varied.

The package came with this paper, which contained instructions for this month’s project.

I find it a little strange that they sent this large box (instead of the poly mailers of past months) for such a small amount of material, though I guess it kept the beads from getting crushed. (Although the instructions said “strands,” both colors were actually loose and mixed in together.)

Beaded Hoop Earrings

Here’s a better look at the materials. You get earring hooks, hoop findings, wire, and two colors of seed beads (I’d estimate size 6/0).

This is a pretty simple project, you basically just wind the wire around the hoops, string the beads, and finish it off. This is a good thickness of wire for wrapping, which I appreciate.

Here are my completed earrings. Sometimes I follow the pattern from the instructions and sometimes I come up with my own idea, but this month I just stuck to the example (though I ended up with more beads in my rows than they did). I have been wanting to play around with findings like this for a while so I was glad to get the chance to do so.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Darn Good Beads of the Month because the materials were unbranded/not labeled. I do feel that the physical materials provided were of good quality. I appreciated the ease with which I could wrap the wire and even though all the beads were mixed in together, with appropriate lighting, I could pick out the darker and lighter ones. And there were enough that you could make more than three rows, or stick to one color, or whatever.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? In general, you’ll get your first box at sign-up and then move to the regular shipping schedule after that.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $14 (including shipping to the continental US) and you get all the materials to make one jewelry project.
