Accio! August 2018 “Wizard Wheezes” Review

The info card for this box is always an “issue” of the Daily Prophet, and it explains all the delights about to be discovered within! The theme of this month’s box is “Wizard Wheezes,” and it’s dedicated to our favorite Potterverse pranksters, Fred and George. I really liked what the Prophet had to say about the value of laughter in darker times: “...even when the world feels heavy and grim, a little levity can go a long way toward making us feel like everything is going to turn out okay in the end.” I’m going to keep that in mind, and hopefully, these items will help me remember! Let’s check ‘em out.

Joke Shop Staff Tee

Joke Shop Staff Tee - Listed Value $25

This soft tee shirt mimics the robes worn by employees at the joke shop - and look at that purple color! There’s a “W” on the front that marks the wearer as “staff,” and the back advertises a Weasley product! My tee advertises Wildfire Wizbangs on the back, the fireworks that the twins used to torture Dolores Umbridge on her first day. Every time she tried to make them vanish with magic, they multiplied by ten! I love that this is so deeply entrenched in the fandom, without any clues to its references. Either someone will get it, or not, but if they do - you know they’re just as big of a fan!

Extendable Ears Cord Keeper

Extendable Ears Cord Keeper - Listed Value $6

One of the twins’ early inventions, Extendable Ears allowed Harry and his friends to hear important conversations happening between Order of the Phoenix members. This Accio!-exclusive, neoprene sleeve for earbuds is clever, and although it’s not the most complex item I’ve ever received, the creativity it took to connect it to one of the Weasley inventions has me extremely impressed. It’s also doing a great job of keeping my wireless earbuds corralled together with their charging cord!

Kawaii Pygmy Puff Enamel Pin - Listed Value $10

Fred and George’s talents extended beyond mere joke item creation - with these li’l creatures, they dabbled a bit in breeding, creating the breed of Pygmy Puff. Magical folk will tell you that they’re miniature Puffskeins, and therefore that might be why Fred and George were never investigated by the Ministry for their creative pursuit here. This pin is fantastic! The Puff has been Kawaii-fied, making it even cuter than normal, and I’m thrilled I got the limited-edition pink, glittery option in my box - only 100 of them were made!

Instant Darkness Black Bath Powder

Instant Darkness Black Bath Powder, 10 oz. - Retail Value $13, Listed Value $10 (found here for $9.75)

I actually laughed out loud when I found this item - how clever! Darkness powder is one of the twins’ imports - they get it from Peru, and when used, it creates complete darkness to aid one’s escape. I love that it’s taken the form of bath powder. The color is so deep and rich, like a green-black, and it has almost an earthy, mineral smell to it. It contains coconut oil, which made my skin really soft, and the biodegradable glitter is appreciated. There’s enough in this bag for at least three baths!

Magical Joke Shop Vinyl Decal - Listed Value $6

The final item in the box is also an Accio! Exclusive. The decal, boasting the Wizard Wheezes logo, also includes the shop’s address in Diagon Alley. I’m not one much for car decals, so I may take the Prophet’s suggestion that I affix to something else, like a water bottle, for maximum enjoyment!

Verdict: There was so much magic to be had this month! I thought the theme was incredibly strong, and I marveled at the cleverness of several of the item tie-ins (here’s looking at you, cord keeper and bath powder). I can’t wait to debut the tee shirt at a nerd event, and the pin and decal are awesome additions to my household. Many of these items were incredibly exclusive, and I felt like the whole Accio! box was a good value for the money.

This is one of the best boxes this sub has done! The price point is a little high for me, and I think it would be too much stuff. I think this box would be better as a quarterly.

It’s definitely a cute box but at $50 cost with shipping and RV of $57 you have to love every item and be willing to pay retail for it.
