Makeup Geek Purple Passion Mystery Box Review

Duochrome Eyeshadow in Backlight, 1.8 g

Duochrome Eyeshadow in Backlight, 1.8 g - Retail Value $6

I am in love with this eyeshadow! It is a frosty light purple with a light blue shift when the light hits, and I think it is absolutely ethereal. This duochrome shade is unique to my makeup collection, and I have more eyeshadow palettes than I care to admit. The formula of the eyeshadow itself was really lovely, as it was creamy and smooth to apply. I would recommend using a dense brush (or your finger) for this cover to really pack on the pigment!

Foiled Eyeshadow in Hype, 1.8 g - Retail Value $10

Here is another shade that really brings the color, and I am loving it! Hype is described as an amethyst purple with a metallic foil finish, and this is another shade with a creamy and smooth formula. Since it is a metallic I would recommend applying with your finger for the bright punch of color, or with a brush if you don’t want the purple to be too intense!

Signature Eyeshadow in Vintage, 1.8 g

Signature Eyeshadow in Vintage, 1.8 g - Retail Value $6

Vintage is matte medium brown with mauve undertones, and I think it compliments Hype and Backlight really well! This is a good transition shade to make the brighter colors more wearable in an overall eyeshadow look for people who aren’t used to colorful looks or can’t go all out with the purple.

Signature Eyeshadow in Taboo, 1.8 g - Retail Value $6

Taboo is a matte ultra-deep raisin purple that fits right into a smoky eye look. On me, I couldn't really tell that this was a shade of purple, and I thought it was another deep brown. This eyeshadow is still pretty pigmented, though not as much as the other shades. I like that because if my brush picks up too much of a dark, pigmented color I am stuck blending for five minutes just to get the look I was originally going for.

Showstopper Creme Stain in Grapevine, Full-Size! Retail Value $10

I was excited to see this crème stain in the box because if I am going to wear a bold purple lip like Grapevine it is going to need to stay put. Unfortunately, this was heavy on the crème and light on the stain, and it didn't last through a non-greasy, non-messy meal. That is a bummer, but grapevine is still a beauty. Thanks to the crème formula it is very comfortable and non-drying, it just lacks the staying power I would expect from a product labeled stain.

Iconic Lipstick in Savvy, Full-Size! Retail Value $12

This was a surprise favorite in the box for me! Savvy is a muted medium purple with subtle pink undertones, and it is the perfect purple lipstick to wear when you still want to look professional. I would totally wear this to work at the law office without feeling out of place because on me this wears as a deep mauve with purple undertones. I feel polished wearing it, but also fun because it is still purple! The formula is pretty great, as it is non-drying and once applied it feels like I’m not wearing lipstick! I also appreciate that this didn’t really transfer once it was set.

Here are the swatches of all the colors. From top to bottom we have Grapevine, Savvy, Vintage, Backlight, Hype, and Taboo.

Here is a look I did using all of the eyeshadows plus Grapevine. I started with a fluffy blending brush and applied Vintage in a windshield wiper motion into my crease. I then took Taboo and blended it out in the outer corner of my lid. Next, I took Blacklight and applied it into the inner third of my lid before going in with my fingers to pat Hype into the center of my lid. I then took the fluffy brush I used to apply Vintage and blended all the colors into each other. I finished with a coat of Grapevine on my lips! Overall I liked how the colors looked, but in the future, I wouldn't personally pair a bright purple lip with a purple eyeshadow look—I felt like the colors were competing.

The Verdict: I thought this box was a great assortment of different shades of purple! True purple makeup lovers may be disappointed as some of the shades are definitely muted purples, but I think that makes this box more versatile and universally appealing. I also love that all of the products included aren't clearance items that the brand needed to unload—all of the items are available for sale at full price on the website! Because of that, the value of this mystery box is also pretty great—I calculated a value of an even $50 which is more than double the cost of the box! This was my first time trying makeup geek, and though I am not used to products that come in pans needing a z-palette, overall I think the quality is awesome for the price you pay.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $23.99 ($20 + $3.99 shipping) which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Backlight: $2.88
  • Hype: $4.80
  • Vintage: $2.88
  • Taboo: $2.88
  • Grapevine: $4.80
  • Savvy: $5.76

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

I got one of these too. Haven’t really seriously tried any of the colors, I am having major skin issues and it’s making me feel ugly.

I was surprised to find out that MG is based a couple of hours away from me.

I’m expecting a shipment of the Lipstick Day sale items I bought. It seems to be stuck at the Jackson Post Office, but that just could be that someone forgot to scan it as they put it in a truck. Hope so.

I struggle with pretty severe cystic acne, so I totally understand what you mean about skin issues bringing you down. Take my word for it though– you’re gorgeous! Play with the fun colors 🙂

Jessica – thanks for reviewing this box! And FYI, the correct name for the shadow is called Blacklight, not Backlight 🙂

Grapevine stayed decently well on my lips, I didn’t have to touch it up more than once or twice though out the workday. My only gripe is that it was super dry coming out of the tube. U don’t know if mine was just defective? How was yours?
