Accio! July 2018 Review
The info card for this box is always an “issue” of the Daily Prophet, and it explains all the delights about to be discovered within! In honor of his birthday on the 31st of July, this month’s theme is “The Boy Who Lived”! Dedicated to items centered around Harry himself, I’m really excited to see how this motif manifests itself in each of the items. Shall we take a look?
Hand-Lettered Tee - Listed Value $25
These ultra-soft, super-comfortable tees are always a welcome addition to my wardrobe, and even though this is in Gryffindor colors (and not my beloved Ravenclaw), I’ll let it slide just this once! Just kidding. This tee was designed in a collab with Accio! by Lauren Fairweather, a famed fandom creative, and you can see her talent in this design. If you look closely, you can also see that the gold ink of the snitch is metallic, which basically makes me swoon!
Sterling Pendant Necklace - Listed Value $19
I love seeing how design and fandom intersect in these items, and I’ve seen lots of interpretations of Harry’s famous scar - but usually, they’re presented in conjunction with his equally-famous specs! I really like the design choice here, though, and with just the single lightning bolt of the scar as a delicate centerpiece. I personally don’t have sensitive skin, but I’m sure subscribers who do will appreciate the extra-quality of the sterling silver that was used in this piece, and I have to say, I adore how delicate this tiny charm is.
Lumos! Pen - Listed Value $6
Of all the spells we watched Harry master, I truly think “Lumos!” would be the most useful for day-to-day life. Looking for something in a dark drawer? “Lumos!” Grabbing an outfit from the back of your closet? “Lumos!” Cleaning your supremely messy car? “Lum-” Well, actually, I wish there was a spell just for cleaning out my car, but this pen will certainly prove useful in other applications where darkness is a factor. I love pens, and this would actually be awesome for just scribbling myself a quick to-do or reminder note before bed - I won’t even have to turn on the lamp!
Quidditch Captain Keychain - Listed Value $6
This was a genius way to pair the theme AND still make sure subscribers received a personalized House item! Harry served as Gryffindor’s Quidditch Captain for the last year that he attended Hogwarts (although that year was not the last year he was supposed to attend Hogwarts), and this keychain is a nice nod to something that he did while at the same time offering a useful item that applies to any House!
Verdict: I didn’t know what to expect based on the theme, but I ended up really enjoying the items in this box that celebrate Mr. Potter! I think I’m going to wear the lightning bolt necklace really regularly, the Lumos pen is already in my bag, and I’m going to definitely get use out of the comfy combed tee.
