Koala Crate "Wild West" June 2018 Review

This month’s theme is WILD WEST!

Koala Crate sends a magazine every month called “imagine!” It’s full of activities and stories for little ones. It is colorful and nicely illustrated. The magazine includes little stories and ideas for the theme.

There is also an instruction booklet included. This is something that makes this box really fun to me. The directions are step-by-step with illustrations. It is very easy to follow. There are three projects this month: Bandana, Horseshoe Toss, and Hobby Horse.

Another thing I like about this booklet is that on the back of the instructions there is a guide that shows a messiness scale and the level of grown-up involvement.  It also shows the skills the project works on, such as fine motor skills, exploring, or creating. I appreciate how the company is thinking about the educational aspects of these projects and what skills they can work on through these activities.

This month two of the activities are maximum messiness...EEEEK! They both involve paint. Let’s see how this goes!

Project 1: Bandana

This project was indeed messy. I wish they had labeled if the paint was washable because it made me nervous to use it. At home, I only use washable paint for all my projects. So, that was one thing that I didn’t like. For this project, you put the paint in the cup, use the sponge to put paint on the stamp, then used the stamp to decorate the bandana. This was a challenge to keep even slightly clean. This was not my favorite project.

Project 2: Horseshoe Toss

The second project used the same paint cup, paint sponge (to put paint on the horseshoe) and the horseshoe stamp. Again, this was very challenging to not get everywhere. The bags needed to dry for several hours before stamping the second side which just isn't realistic for us because I didn’t want to leave the paint out and risk an animal or child grabbing it. Overall, this project was only ok for us.

Project 3: Hobby Horse

This was the least messy project, and I enjoyed it the most. I don’t mind messy projects normally, but the multiple steps required with the paint for the other projects was a bit much for me. This project was straightforward and required some cool skills: tying, using stickers, stuffing, and threading. I liked this project.

Verdict: I enjoy Koala Crate by KiwiCo because it allows my son and I do a few projects I otherwise wouldn’t come up with.  This month wasn’t my favorite because I couldn't figure out if the paint was washable which is a big deal when your child sees paint and gets REALLY excited. Although the paint wasn’t ideal, I still had fun overall. I think it’s a great value for the $20 a month, as thinking of these projects, getting all the supplies, and prepping them would take a VERY LONG time.
