Facet Jewelry Box is a new subscription box from the editors at Facet Jewelry and Bead & Button magazine. They offer two versions: the “Quick and Easy Stringing” box and the “Bead Stitching” box, so you can choose a subscription based on your skill level and interests, as well as the amount of time you want to invest in the projects.

This is a review of the $24.95 a month “Bead Stitching” box (both versions cost the same).

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Psst.  It is “Czechmates,” not “Checkmates” for the brick beads.  I’m sure that is a spellcheck error:

Facet Jewelry Box Bead Stitching June 2018 Review

This is still a pretty new subscription and they are still working out a few kinks so I really didn’t know what was in store:

The first thing you see when you open the box is this full-color booklet. I haven’t shown you all of the pages inside, because part of the subscription fee is for the projects that are included.

This is a really nice booklet, honestly, but I’d expect nothing less from the folks at Bead & Button (I’ve been a subscriber for awhile now). There are also links to online resources if you need a little help with a technique.

Cinch Stitch Bracelet

This was a pretty simple project to complete, you do daisy chain with some peanut/farfalle beads in the middle and then a few right angle weave sections. I liked the look better when it was finished than I thought I would, although there is more thread showing than I would prefer but it was not possible to follow the pattern and have the thread hidden because six seed beads were not enough to fully surround the size of peanut/farfalle beads we were provided. I had leftover materials but once again, I did shorten the bracelet to better fit my wrist.

One minor complaint about the layout of the instructions on this one: Who arranges steps like this?  I kept trying to go from step 1 to step 3, which was right below it, rather than going over to the right to see step 2 and then back down the column for steps 3 and 4.

Chevron Necklace

Oh, my goodness, did this take a LONG time to finish. Hours and hours and hours. I like the way it turned out, though. I was a little afraid I was going to run out of the silver-lined clear seed beads, although I ended up having a few extras. I made the necklace the length suggested by the instructions although you could probably get another inch or two out of it by using all the beads.

I ran out of Fireline with this project but I had been saving up all the spools from past boxes so I had plenty with which to complete the project. I did lose some because I left the project on my dining room table one weekend and Sneaky ATE part of the necklace. I found her licking her lips and saw the thread and gently tugged at it and out came lots of Fireline, some beads, AND A NEEDLE. Of course, I watched her like a hawk after that in case we needed to go to the emergency vet but it’s been enough time now (several days) that I am convinced she’s OK. Monkey also tried to eat some Fireline yesterday but I was right there and stopped him. Anyway, if you have cats, keep your in-progress projects in a tray or something so you can pick it up and put it out of reach when you are not working on it.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Facet Jewelry Box, but you get the materials and instructions for making two complete pieces of jewelry. Despite the hiccup with the weird instructions layout for the first project, overall, this was a pretty good month, especially if you like doing intricate seed bead work.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You will receive the July box. Boxes go out after the 20th and people who sign up before the 15th will get that month’s box. If you sign up after the 15th, you may still be able to get that month’s box but this is not guaranteed.

LIMITED TIME DEAL: Use code SAVE50 for 50% off your first box! Or, use code FACET to save 10% off your first box!

Value Breakdown: At $24.95 per box, you are paying about $12.48 per project.

Omg! My cat LOOOVED licking plastic grocery bags and that little repetitive rustling sound drive me bonkers! My boyfriend & I had her for 11.5 years after she wandered into our lives. Sadly she became very ill in March of this year and we had to do the humane thing. We both miss her terribly and even fond & funny memories turn into tears. 😺😢💔 Love to you Succotash😚, and keep an eye on those clever inquisitive beasts Ragan.
P.S. great job on the beadwork!

Lovely necklace. I believe it took many hours to do. My cat eats paper but I have never heard about taking food out of a pot or eating items used for beading.

In fairness, both Sneaky and Mr. Kitty are on prednisolone, for asthma and inflammatory bowel disease, respectively, and that increases appetite to the point where they eat inappropriate things. They also both like to lick plastic bags.

Smiles good catch on monkey…. def keep all thread and thread like product out of reach. Cats can’t help but swallow the stuff, due to their tongue. Had a cat swallow a bunch of thread had to follow her for a week and cut the thread as it came out, you can’t pull it because it can gather their intestines, so vet had me just snip it after she did her business. NOT something I’d want to do agsin… lol

Wowza. So relieved your kittle was alright! There’s no way to predict what they’re going to take an interest in. I wish we knew what they were thinking.

Stringing is such a snooze! This was a great box to see reviewed. I primarily do bead weaving and love the time investment, as well as the reward of finishing a piece.

Beautiful necklace! I would have given up after an hour.
Btw Today I caught my cat licking a pat of butter she’d stolen from the table, so I laughed at your story about Sneaky. Glad she’s ok.

Yeah, it’s been more than a week now so I’m not worried about her any more, if something bad was going to happen it would have already. But I am now more careful about keeping all Fireline out of reach.

I used to have to worry about Mr. Kitty stealing things — he once hopped on the counter and stole spinach out of a pot cooking on the stove. He’d probably still do things like that if he could see very well. Monkey is the food thief now. He insists on sitting at the table with us (we have a little ledge and we have an upside-down plastic tub for him there) for each meal. But if there is cheese on the table, or if there are scrambled eggs, it has to be covered or he will get into it.

I always love the finished projects in this box and would love to be able to do these projects. But since I’ve been struggling a bit to finish projects in the easier stringing box, I’ve decided to just admire from afar, lol.
