This is the only box I’ve seen for a (long) while that managed to keep the tissue paper neatly in place during shipping. (Actually, they are really good at filling the box and packing everything neatly together to take advantage of all the available space.)

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

A Little Touch of Magick June 2018 Review

I am still fairly new to reviewing this subscription and was excited to see what they had in store:

The box came with this information card listing the items and retail values. Since the items were unbranded, I used these values when writing the review.

Bonus: Original Short Fiction

This was the first thing I saw when I opened the box. I suppose I didn’t follow directions because I had to take photos during unboxing, but I did read this last night. It is a fair amount shorter than last month’s story and is somewhat dark in tone.

JULY SPOILER:

And tucked into the end of the story booklet was a preview for next month.

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt Bath Soak

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt Bath Soak – Listed Value $12

It seems that you’ll get a few bath/body type items each month in this box. I have been wanting to give my feet some TLC lately so I used some of this in a foot soak prior to doing a home pedicure and it worked nicely for that (plus I used less than with a full bath, so I still have plenty left over to use again). It softened up my skin a bit which helped with the pumice I used later on and it had a pleasant fragrance.

Vintage Style Mermaid Note Cards

Vintage Style Mermaid Note Cards – Listed Value $8

It also seems that you’ll get a few cards and/or prints each month in this box. What I like about these: (1) they’re blank inside, so they can be used for any occasion and (2) the art on the front is pretty enough that you could display these as prints instead of sending them if you were so inclined.

Handmade Seashell Accent Comb – Listed Value $38

This was created custom for this box by Spoiled Rotten Lilith and Lady Luna Adornments. I am one of those people who air dries my hair and just brushes it and have never put my hair up in my adult life (I am 40) so please don’t make too much fun of my bun but I wanted to show this in use. I am now kind of tempted to make my own combs with supplies from bead boxes.

Dolphin Earrings on Stainless Steel Wires

Dolphin Earrings on Stainless Steel Wires – Listed Value $18

I appreciate the mention of earwire material. I did coat these with clear nail polish as I can only wear titanium and niobium without doing that, but stainless steel should work for a lot of people as-is, and coated, these were pretty comfortable. (Just reapply the coating every now and then between wearings.) These are delicate and don’t get tangled in my hair, which is definitely nice.

Silver Net Kimono – Listed Value $45

I took the first picture and then realized no one would ever be able to make heads or tails of it, so I put it on for a few more pictures. The one with my arms out is to give you an idea of the size. I would classify this as “one size fits all.” For some perspective, I am 5’5” and a US size 2. I don’t want to speculate how this would fit different sizes but as you can see, this was roomy on me, and what you can’t see is that the material is a bit stretchy, as well, so I think it should work for a lot of people. Also, I realize it is difficult to assess quality from a photo like this, but it does seem really well-made. And, I think this is nice enough to use to dress up a plain dress for a holiday party or an event of that nature (i.e., not strictly limited to cosplay or anything).

Mermaid Necklace

Mermaid Necklace – Listed Value $24

This is actually pretty long, which you can see in the last photo (I tucked some of the chain away on the necklace stand). It fit over my head without unclasping although it does have a lobster claw clasp. The charm says “mermaid squad” although it’s not super obvious if you’re not someone who wears jewelry with words (I rarely do). This made a fair amount of noise when I walked around. I think this would work well with casual attire but could also go with a tunic or solid-colored dress for the office.

Mermaid Coin Purse – Listed Value $5

This is just a simple zipper pouch but it does have a keyring attachment. I often have need of a little pouch like this (for earbuds, or chapstick, or dog waste bags, or whatever) and I like the pattern on this so I’m going to attach it to my house key for future use.

Mermaid Tears Soap

Mermaid Tears Soap – Listed Value $6

This is the second bath/body item for the month. Two scents were possible and I received “mermaid tears” which includes notes of jasmine, violet, moss, and sandalwood. Although I don’t care for floral fragrances in perfume so much, I love them in bath and body items, and sandalwood is one of my favorite scents as well, so I am a fan of this. I tend to switch off between shower gel and bar soap and getting one bar soap a month is an amount that one person could conceivably finish up (we also received soap last month).

Verdict: I calculated a total value of $156 for the June 2018 A Little Touch of Magick (fantasy version).  Granted, I did have to use all values from the information card, but that is about triple the cost of the subscription plus shipping on a month-to-month basis, and that includes several unique handcrafted items. Interestingly, when I put on all the wearable items for photos, my husband complimented the look, and he doesn’t usually make comments about such things (he usually just takes the pictures without further comment).

I also think there is something to be said for curation here. Opening this box isn’t just about the items (which were all lovely), but there is also an element of experience here, helped along by the story. Although this is a relatively new subscription, I can tell that a great deal of thought has been put into it, from sourcing the items on down to the careful packaging.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive July's. From A Little Touch of Magick:

We will begin shipping on the 14th of each month and we will continue to ship that month's box until the last day of the month or until we run out.

Thanks for the great review! I have to say that you kicked butt putting your hair up! It’s not easy to do whether it’s your 1st or 599th time lol. Also I think the shell comb looks beautiful in your hair and if you do start making your own with the bead box items I hope you will take pictures and share how your creations turn out!

I just received my first box this month as well. I enjoyed all of the items and while I wouldn’t use the Kimono it makes a wonderful coverup for the beach and I will be gifting it to my mother in law who would love it. I was so impressed that I subbed to their Le Noir Bazaar as they are part of that box as well. Love them both and looking forward to next month’s surprises

Ragan, did you like having your hair up? IMO, it is one of the perks of having hair long enough to do so. I feel more ‘elegant’ perhaps, when I pin it up. Also, I really loved the shawl! It looked lovely on you.

You are one of the best reviewers. Thanks for the reminder about the clear coating on the earrings.
