Trunk Club For Women May 2018 Review
My month’s trunk arrived to me in its Trunk Club trademark cardboard shipping box fashioned to resemble a suitcase. I am rather fond of the personalized details in their packaging, especially the note from my stylist and itemized invoice.
They include a pamphlet that provides product information, how to get the most from your trunk, and free shipping label and tape strips.
Here is a close up of the list of items I received and their costs.
Phoenix Dress by City Chic, Size XL (22W) - Retail Value $89
This dress gives ultra- Stevie Nicks Summertime vibes, so I appreciate it for the style. This piece has Bishop sleeves with a gorgeous floral and Phoenix embroidered design. The fabric feels like a gauzy lightweight material but has stretch. There is a partial lining as well to make the dress more opaque. The waist has elastic in it to add definition and to provide stretch. The dress is a wee bit big on me, especially in the sleeves. It is beautiful, but I feel like I was wearing the poofy sleeve top from Seinfeld. I am wondering how a size down would have fit. This dress would look great with perforated, open-toed bootie heel shoes and large brimmed hat to keep the sun out of your face!
Dot Tie Waist A-Line Dress by EVANS, Size 22W - Retail Value $75
This dress may be my favorite of the selections that Stefania sent my way. I have said in various reviews how I love leopard print because it is neutral, but the same applies to polka dots. This dress is so versatile and can be styled a number of ways! I could wear it with red platform heels and a blazer for the office or with some simple yellow accessories like a beret and sunglasses as I did for my styling. The fabric is a light viscose, it is a very easy piece to wear! The length of this dress makes it perfect for the office, weddings, summer parties, or even to travel in. I debated keeping this dress but opted against it because I feel I have rather similar pieces.
Palm Print Off the Shoulder Top by EVANS, Size 22W - Retail Value $59
The cold /off the shoulder trend is alive and well if you were wondering. It is like Twinkies, it won’t go away! This top’s print makes me think of my mom’s 80s rattan couch cushions. Though the tropical print feels like it is from a different era, it is brought to current with the trendy cut and style of the top. The shirt is a bit too big and baggy on me. I feel I could stand to go down a size. I am not keen on this top anyhow due to the fact I would have to wear my strapless bra with it. I also don’t find the sleeve ruching to be a necessary touch. I styled the top with a pair of grey rinse Rawan jeans featured in my upcoming Dia & Co box review!
Floral Stripe Belted Dress by Glamorous, Size 22W - Retail Value $69 (found on sale here for $46.23)
This dress screams 'the 80s' to me due to the daisy and stripes print, but the cut more so. The sleeves on this dress are rather puffy, which doesn’t work for my already broad shoulders. The dress has limited stretch, but that was not an issue for me since the dress was rather roomy. I would have liked to see if the fit was better for me in a size 20.
Brasilia Maxi Dress by City Chic, Size XL (22W) - Retail Value $99 (found on sale here for $66.33)
This dress is the perfect beach dress. I can envision wearing this while walking in the sand, feeling the wind blow my dress around. This piece has limited stretch, but the size XL was rather roomy in the top. I don’t know if the intended fit is meant to be more body skimming or loose. The dress is rather lightweight and comfy. This would look great with some jeweled sandal and with a denim jacket during chillier evenings.
Side Vent Shorts by SLINK Jeans, Size 24W - Retail Value $59
I told Stefania I was on a mission for jean shorts. I wear a ton of dresses and skirts, but shorts have always been rough for me. Mainly because I can never find a pair that doesn’t look like a diaper on me. In addition, shorts always look like they are being devoured by my inner thighs! The inside always seems to crawl up in the front. The struggle is real for a good pair of shorts! It is in the 90s out here and I refuse to wear capris or pants in this weather! Stefania delivered and sent me three pairs to try. These SLINK Jeans’ fit was a tad baggier than I would have preferred, but the length was perfect. These were ultra-comfy and provided a great chub rub barrier. I also liked the dark denim rinse and that the fabric has a lot of stretch. The stretchiness is in part why I would prefer a size down. Not too shabby, though!
Briella Fray Hem Denim Bermuda Shorts in Rinse by NYDJ, Size 22W - Retail Value $69 (found on sale here for $46.23)
These may be my favorite shorts of the bunch sent my way in this May Trunk Club. The dark blue rinse is my ideal, the fit is snugger than the first pair, the fabric has great stretch, and they are able to be cuffed to adjust the length. These were immensely comfortable to boot! They also definitely prevent any chafing on the thighs and legs which is a BIG thumbs up! I paired the shorts with a leopard print v-neck and my new summer go-to shoes. This would look great with a bandana tied at the neck, striped boatneck shirt, and sneakers.
Palma Print Tank by Sanctuary, Size 2x - Retail Value $89
This top was not my favorite of the bunch sadly. The fit was a bit too baggy, but the color scheme of khakis and muted neons harkened some bad early 90s fashions. I wanted to love this top because I am a sucker for palm prints, but this one just didn’t do it for me. This top would look great with light washed jeans and baby pink flats and turquoise accessories to bring out the shades in the top!
The Starling Boyfriend Shorts by Rebel Wilson X Angels in Harbor, Size 24W - Retail Value $59 (found on sale here for $39.53)
These shorts, were sadly, the pair I liked least; mainly due to cut and because they were big on me. The Rebel Wilson X Angels line usually has a vanity sizing. I also seem to go down a size or so with their pieces for an ideal fit. The shorts have ample stretch and this rinse is a nice middle ground if you aren’t a fan of extremely light or dark rinse jeans.
Verdict: This month had some hits and misses, but I genuinely feel that my stylist, Stefania, listens to me and takes my feedback to heart. I told her I have a trip later in June and she made a point of sending me vacation-ready pieces. My favorites this month were the EVANS Polka Dot dress, SLINK Jeans shorts, NYDJ shorts, and the Brasilia Maxi dress. The other ones were misses due to sizing and cut issues, and a few due to style like the Palma Print tank. I spoke to my stylist about these matters and plan to update my size listed on my profile again. I really cannot gauge these things because I range between a 20-24 in bottoms these days, depending on cut, fabric, and brand. My stylist is always incredibly accommodating through these issues. I also appreciate that I can communicate with her so frequently through the Trunk Club app. I have said it before and I will say it again, but the app truly is one of my favorite features that Trunk Club offers.
