Play! by Sephora June 2018 #405 Review

The theme for this month’s Box is “Summer Nights”, which is illustrated with a cute neon light font on the info poster. The back of the poster describes the product and how to use it.

Sephora also sends a Play! Pass which gives you 50 extra reward points to use with purchases in store; it can also be used to get tips on the products you received in your box.

Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips

Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips, 1 oz. - Estimated Value $5.62 (buy a 1.69 oz. bottle for $9.50)

I typically go for a gentle micellar water option for makeup removal, but I could see this one doing some heavy duty cleaning (I’m talking lash glue and waterproof mascara territory). It is your traditional two-way formula, so I shook the bottle, saturated a cotton pad and held it to my eyelid for about ten seconds, swiped and (POOF!) my waterproof liner was gone! It left an oily residue, but that washed away easily.

Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder

Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder, 1 g - Estimated Value $3.50 (buy a 10g jar for $35)

This setting powder is a dream for dry skin! It goes on smoothly and my foundation wore for eight hours without any touch-ups. It is a translucent powder with two color options, Light Medium and Medium Deep. Three key features that won my praises: it is talc free (good news for acne prone skin); it is not stark white (no flashback!); and it didn’t make my skin feel tight after a full day’s wear.

Marajo Nourishing Cleansing Cream & Deep Treatment Butter

Marajo Nourishing Cleansing Cream & Deep Treatment Butter - 2, 7ml samples - Estimated Value $1.87 (buy the full-size due for $16)

Both cleansing cream and the treatment butter have thick textures that feel like a luxe treatment you would get at the salon. The cleansing cream smells of coconuts, reminiscent of Nexxus Therappe Shampoo, whereas the treatment butter smells subtly of hair dye solution. The chemical smell didn’t bother me, but I could see it being offensive to some.

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Creme

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Creme, 1 fl oz. - Estimated Value $7 (buy a 4 oz. bottle for $28)

This styling cream was my introduction to the Living Proof No Frizz range, and I’ve never looked back! I apply a dime-sized amount to damp hair, comb through, and blow dry to my heart’s content. This styling creme manages to smooth and nourish my fine hair without weighing it down, and the citrusy floral fragrance is nearly addictive.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, 0.84 oz. - Estimated Value $4.73 (buy an 8 oz. jar for $45) UPDATE: Retail Value $10

I’ve been so curious about this cream after all of the hype, and finally, I understand! The sweet caramel smell and the texture made a great first impression as I opened the sample. This cream goes on like silk, sinks into the skin as it dries in almost record speed, and doesn‘t leave a sticky or greasy feeling after application. This product claims that it will tighten and firm the skin, but I haven’t seen an improvement after just one use. The size of this sample is a bit of a tease (although bigger than I expected!).

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick in Queen B

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick in Queen B, 3 ml - Estimated Value $5.34 (buy a full-size tube for $21)

My sad, desert lips find liquid lipsticks to be intolerable, and this one is, unfortunately, a formidable formula for me. The color is a soft, matte mauve, and even with a balm underneath, I felt the cracking to be inevitable. With over 2,000 reviews and a four-star rating on sephora.com, it looks like a lot of people have had a better experience than me. Queen B swatched on my arm and lips below:

Verdict: This month’s Play! by Sephora box has a value of about $28.06 UPDATE: $33.33.  I can use most of the products in my daily routine, and I love discovering and sampling new high-end products. Sephora has really stepped it up following our individual beauty profiles, too! I remember wondering why I received certain products in the past, but this month’s box felt like it was meant for me.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

I received this exact box, and overall I’m pretty happy with it. All the products are great brands and I can get use out of. There is also a good mix of skincare/haircare/makeup even thought here is no fragrance, I didn’t miss it. I did feel this box was well worth the$10, and this month is definitely an improvement on past boxes full of little red lipsticks, little sephora eye pencils, and tiny professionals. Overall, I feel like the past few months have been good and I have enjoyed most of the products. Again, nothing in this box was truly new to me. I have/had full/travel sizes of 4/6 of these products. The standout to me this month was the bum bum cream. I love this stuff and this was a pretty generous sample in cute packaging. I would love to get the other bum bum products such as the lip balm and fragrance mist in future boxes. It smells great and is very suited for summer. Although probably not the most exciting, the Clinique makeup remover always comes in handy. I’m not a fan of oil based makeup removers but with waterproof mascara/eyeliner and glitter it is needed and it is nice to have it for those scenarios without buying a full size. It does leave an oily residue but it does wash off relatively easily. I had a full size of Too Faced Queen B, and do like the mauve color and so happy they stopped sending hot pinks and reds for a change. It is drying but with a balm underneath it is ok. Again, this was a generous sample and in a wearable shade. The only thing slightly disappointing, was the size of the Cover FX powder. I was excited for this product because the powders looks very finely milled and easy to set makeup with. However, the size of the container makes it nearly impossible to use. I’m just going to throw this in my purse to set my nose later in the day to reduce oil with a small brush. The living proof is another decently sized sample that I have yet to use. Smells nice and living proof makes nice products so I’ll see how this works out with heat styling. The foil shampoo/conditioner I haven’t used or really looked at, not a deal breaker for me but I will give it a try.

The bum bum cream covers the cost of the box. I could give the rest away.
I love that my box is almost always reviewed. I was wondering about the lipstick.

On FFF, I saw a review that said the product was no better than others such as Korres, etc, then a retraction as her husband loves the smell and became very amorous. It does smell great.

I don’t get the hype on the Bum Bum cream at all. I loved the lipstick and want all the colors.

I don’t actually like the bum bum Cream. Initially it smells so good but it never goes away and my migraine prone head can’t stand it. I’ve found the Lancer body cream to be incredibly indulgent. Fresh scent and silky smooth texture. Non greasy too.

Abby

It smells nice and feels great going on, but I definitely understand that it is *just* a body cream! I’d hesitate to purchase a full size for myself due to the price, but I think it would make a nice luxury gift for someone special. 🙂

What an exceptional review! I love the humor, honesty and photos! I can’t wait to read your future reviews!

I received the same bag & I rarely (if ever) receive the version that is reviewed. This is the second time that I will actually use most of my Play bag items (not the setting powder or the hair dye-scented product — thanks for the tip!) so it was a huge win for me and yay, no fragrance sample!

Thank you – I can always appreciate when they switch up the usual sample vial of perfume, too! 🙂

That size bum bum cream retails for $10.

Abby, I share your pain on liquid matte lipstick 😕

I have to add that your eyes are STUNNING! 😃 Not even talking about the makeup, you have beautiful eyes, girl.

Abby

This was my box and I liked it a lot. All of the products are useful. The Bum Bum cream smells amazing, the lipstick is great for a daily wear product. I can always use makeup remover (the small bottles are great for travel). And the Living Proof comes at the perfect time, in the middle of the summer heat/humidity when my hair tends to FRIZZ like crazy.

I got a different bag but it had the Clinique in it, too. The remover was extremely oily. I’m dying to try the bum bum Creme but the cheap skate in me won’t buy it until I try the sample. ☺️

I still haven’t received my box, lol.

Great box. This one is more my style but I don’t get the ones I want. And my daughter got the same exact box which we both have different profiles and ages lol

I’ve been subscribed for quite a while, and I feel like I’ve only been getting boxes suiting my wants/needs for the last few months.

Aw, the bag is really cute this month! Not interested in any of the products except the Bum Bum cream though, and I already have some from Boxy and FFF.

I received the same box. I was incredibly disappointed with the size of the setting powder! I actually really liked the lipstick.

Frances

That powder container is definitely Barbie doll sized. I don’t think they could have possibly made it any smaller. Lol On a positive note, it is the perfect size to throw in a small clutch for a night out if you need a touchup, but only once though because that’s all you’re going to get out of it. 😉

This is the exact box I rec’d this month so it’s always fun to see it get reviewed. Welcome Abby – hope to see more reviews from you soon and I love the eyeshadow you have on!

Abby

Thanks, Frances! I lined my eyes with Colourpop’s Piggy Bank eyeliner pot [discontinued :(], then went over it with their Supershock shadow in Daddy. 🙂
