Good to know: Green Chef lists the nutrition info for each meal on their website. You have to go under delivery schedule and click on the meal to find the nutrition breakdown. Here’s the catch with the calories listed on the recipe cards: they don’t include the oils you add while cooking which can add another 100-200 calories per serving! I would like to see at least a macro breakdown on the recipe card (calories, carbs, fat, and protein) so that I could plan my day without having to hunt down the nutrition online. I’m glad to know it is there though.
Green Chef Keto Meal Plan May 2018 Review
My husband and I have been following the keto diet on and off for several months now. Green Chef’s Keto plan works well for us because eating low carb helps to control my blood sugar and he is lactose-intolerance (the plan is dairy-free). There isn’t the same level of customization offered with this plan that is available with some of the other plans, but it has forced me to vary my diet.
Green Chef makes sourcing sustainable, organic ingredients top priority. They are thorough in the ingredient list and allergy warnings on their recipes. The prices per meal are higher than some other competitors, but like eating high-quality, organic food from the grocery store, it costs more. Plus, we found that we spend much less than eating out and love not having to play the “what should we eat for dinner” game.
They also have a page on their site that walks you through how you can recycle all of the packagings.
As for shipping, you get to choose from weekly (1-3 boxes per), bi-weekly, or monthly deliveries on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays. The box is well insulated and you don’t have to be at home when it is delivered. Your food will stay fresh and cool. They make it very easy to change your delivery schedule or skip a week anytime. You don’t have the option of switching out meals, but you can see your menus a couple of weeks in advance so you can skip whichever weeks you don’t like.

Brazilian Tuna Moqueca
Collards with radishes & coconut, bell peppers

The recipe cards include the amounts of each ingredient so the meals are easy to recreate if you keep them. There is a short description of the dinner, prep + cook time, calorie count, allergen info, tools you’ll need, and each meal is color-coded to help you organize your ingredients.
On the back, you will find a step-by-step guide with pictures on how to prepare your meal. The checkboxes help a lot if you jump around or split the prep between two people. You’ll also find chef’s tips and helpful bits of info to help if you aren’t a seasoned cook.
We’ve made moqueca from Green Chef once before and liked it, so I was happy to see this meal. It was pretty simple to make and only required 2 pans. There was a little veggie prep and then cooking. Then we cooked the fish and made the moqueca, which is a stew made with coconut milk and lime juice added to the veggies and fish.

Overall, this was a pretty simple meal to make. I have liked most of the cod dishes from Green Chef and I wasn’t disappointed with the tuna. This was just ok. The flavor wasn’t very exciting and there wasn’t enough texture variation for me.
Braised endive & cremini mushrooms, kale salad

This meal looks like it will be hearty and savory.
This meal had lots of steps but all of them were fairly easy. First is some veggie prep. BTW, thyme is the most fickle herb to de-stem! The chicken and endives went into a hot pan to sear together and then were removed from the pan. Then the other veggies and broth went into the pan to simmer and the chicken and endive were added back. We popped that whole pan into the oven and prepped the salad while it was cooking.

This had some really good parts and some bad parts. The chicken was juicy and the veggies added lots of flavors. I liked the added crunchy texture of the kale and nuts in the salad. Kale seems to hold up well against more hearty pairings. I just could not get into the endives. They were bitter and not very easy to cut up to eat. Unfortunately, they were a big part of this meal, but there was plenty of salad to fill me up.
Five-Spice Pork Chops
Sauteed mushrooms & veggies with green curry sauce

I love curry and kimchi so this meal is looking yummy!
This meal was simple and quick to make. Just a bit of prep, slicing mushrooms, de-stemming cilantro, and mincing garlic. We seasoned the pork and dropped it into a hot pan to cook. After removing the pork, we added basically all of the rest of the ingredients to simmer and were done. I loved the smells while cooking this meal.

Yum! This meal was good. It had great textures with the cashews and cabbage adding crunch. The flavors were robust and so different. The pork was the classic five-spice while the curry sauce added some creamy sweetness and the kimchi added a kick of vinegar to brighten everything up. This one was my favorite of this week’s meals.
The Verdict: Our Green Chef keto box was kind of hit or miss this month. I’d say we were only completely happy with the pork meal. The other two had parts we did not enjoy. I do appreciate learning new ways to prepare vegetables that I’ve not had a lot of experience with. And, we feel great about eating organic, sustainable ingredients and love getting all of the ingredients needed delivered right to our door. Even though this plan cost a little more than the other plans offered by Green Chef, a meal for both of us (John and I) breaks down to about $30, we end up saving money versus if we went out and we stick to our eating plan.
