Darn Good Beads of the Month is a monthly subscription for jewelry makers from Darn Good Yarn.  (You don’t have to be able to knit or crochet for this subscription!) Every month you’ll receive materials to complete a quick beading project. You will need some basic tools of your own (pliers, crimping pliers, glue) but they provide all the findings, beads, and stringing materials!

This month's box is being reviewed thanks to an MSA reader request!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Darn Good Beads of the Month June 2018 Review

This is only my second time receiving Darn Good Beads of the Month so I still don’t have a good sense of what to expect.

The package came with this card, which contained instructions for this month’s project. This is pretty simple instruction but they are clear.  I am an experienced jewelry-maker but I think a beginner could also follow these.

You get a charm, some eyeglass holder findings, some seed beads (I estimate them as size 6/0) in two colors, and a whole spool of Stretch Magic elastic cord.

Here are some in-progress photos. Rather than tying the elastic around a bead to keep beads from sliding off, I just started off by tying it to the findings. I chose to add the beads in a random pattern (just mixed them together and grabbed a few at a time). I did use a bit of GS Hypo Cement to secure the knots when I am done, as I didn’t feel they were super strong knots.

I had a few beads left over.  There was quite a lot of Stretch Magic left over, which you could easily use for other projects. Alternatively, you could make this a bit longer if you wanted to.

Here is the finished product:

I don’t see why you couldn’t use this with regular glasses or reading glasses, as well.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Darn Good Beads of the Month because some of the materials were unbranded/not labeled. But you get all the beads, findings, and stringing materials to finish one complete project, and the instructions were really easy to follow (though you may want to secure your knots with some type of glue). I have not received this particular type of project before in any subscription box, and this was an item I don’t already have but could use (I wear contacts some of the time, and I easily lose track of sunglasses because I’m not used to having them on).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? In general, you’ll get your first box at sign-up and then move to the regular shipping schedule after that.

Value Breakdown: this box costs $14 (including shipping to the continental US) and you get all the materials to make one jewelry project.

Great idea. Something useful but different from jewelry. I could even probably do this.
