Winc April 2018 Review

When you sign up to join Winc, you take a short, fun “palate profile” quiz that helps determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations or choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection (or skip the month completely).

The bottles come shipped in an upright cardboard box supported by cardboard contraptions that keep the bottles from bumping into one another. The best part is that the box itself has a sturdy plastic handle, which makes carrying it into the kitchen (or to a party) easy as pie!

It makes me feel at ease that all of my wine made it safely through shipping!

Sometimes there are some reading materials with the wine. This month came with an envelope with several offers.

You may have noticed the sticker on the outside of the box. It's for a new show on STARZ called "Sweetbitter" that starts May 6th.

Finally, there is a card from Winc that mentions their partnership with 1% for the Planet in which they donate 1% of the sales from Pacifica Wine towards projects that benefit the environment.

Winc wines = green

The flipside has some quick stats on why they are "green".

Now, let's get to the wines!

2016 Field Theory Albariño back of 2016 Field Theory Albariño 2016 Field Theory Albariño with glass

2016 Field Theory Albariño - Retail Value $25.99 (or $20.00 through the subscription)

Lodi, California

Body: Medium

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 14.1%

Winemaking: Eco-friendly and vegan

First things first, this bottle is so cool! I love how short, chubby, and minimal it is, plus it has the cool mountains on it. I chose this one based on the fruity notes of grapefruit, lime, and peach because those are all top notch in my book. This wine is really crisp and perfect for the warm weather we are finally having! I don't know anything about Albarino (which is a grape that hails from Spain) so it was fun to try something different. This pairs well with fish and salad which is perfect since I've been trying to eat more of both lately.

2016 Honey Beast White Blend back of 2016 Honey Beast White Blend 2016 Honey Beast White Blend with glass

2016 Honey Beast White Blend, 750 ml - Retail Value $16.99 (or $13.00 through the subscription)

Paso Robles, California

Body: Full

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 13.4%

How could I not try something called Honey Beast? The tasting notes of honey, peach, and vanilla are what drew me in. This one seems a bit sweeter than the Albarino and has a creamier texture that goes well with veggies or creamy pasta. Mmm. I'm actually making a Home Chef meal with zucchini and farfalle tonight, so this should be perfect!

2016 Les Bobos Gamay back of 2016 Les Bobos Gamay 2016 Les Bobos Gamay with glass

2016 Les Bobos Gamay, 750 ml - Retail Value $16.99 (or $13.00 through the subscription)

France

Body: Light

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 12.3%

Another unfamiliar wine is this Gamay from France. Winc's site tells me that this one is similar to a Pinot Noir as it comes from the southern part of Burgundy (from which Pinot is associated with). It also says it's "easy to drink" which I wholeheartedly agree with. Dry reds are more up my alley to begin with and this one is nice and light. It seems to go well with a lot since it can be paired with poultry, fish, and cheeses, as well as cured meats. That means that this is a great wine to grab when you're heading to a housewarming party that may involve a charcuterie tray. Yay!

2016 Rosa Obscura Red Blend back of 2016 Rosa Obscura Red Blend 2016 Rosa Obscura Red Blend with glass

2016 Rosa Obscura Red Blend, 750 ml - Retail Value $16.99 (or $13.00 through the subscription)

California

Body: Full

Sweetness: Slightly Sweet

Alcohol: 14.9%

Winemaking: Vegan

Lastly, we have the full-bodied red blend. This one is much heavier than the Gamay, and I would even say is a touch spicy.  Since it has such a full flavor, it goes well with other decadent foods like chocolate or red meat, so that it doesn't overpower the food or get lost. I quite like this one over the rest and appreciate it's strong bite.

Verdict: Although I love tasting new wines with Winc, I still don't feel like it's my preferred drink of choice. For those who love wine or are just starting to get into it, this is a great way to try a wide variety at a discounted price. It's also a great way to have wine on hand for company instead of having to make an extra trip when friends are dropping over. It'd also be an easy way to always have something to bring when you're the one dropping by for dinner at a friend's house.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Since Winc allows you to choose your wine, you can get any combination you'd like any month. Sign up today and you're welcome to curate your own or let them choose.
