RescueBox is a monthly subscription box for dogs or cats. For dogs, choose from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), and large (50+ pounds). They are associated with Greater Good (the folks who brought you The Hunger Site, The Animal Rescue Site, and more), and your purchase of a subscription will help provide food and vaccines to shelter pets!

RescueBox May 2018 Review

This box is pretty reliably holiday-themed in months where there is a major holiday occurring, but they opted for a non-holiday theme this month:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box and more information on The RescueBox’s charity efforts.

There was also a flyer relating to pet insurance. Somehow, I think the pet insurance companies would run screaming when they heard about my animals and their issues…

There was also a discount for a company called “Chewsurance.” I guess you buy into this and send pictures of toys (any toys) your dog destroys and they will send you new dog toys. I am telling you right now, Nyx could bankrupt these people.

Puppy Pizza Treat by Pawsitively Gourmet – Listed Value $5.99

Pawsitively Gourmet is wholesale-only so I’ve had to take the value from the information card. It honestly seems a bit high for a single dog cookie but I guess some artisan-type items are like that. Anyway, the decoration is adorable and it held up well during shipping (which is not something I can say for every dog cookie).

Pizza Slice Dog toy by Pridebites

Pizza Slice Dog toy by Pridebites – Retail Value $9.99

We’ve received quite a few Pridebites toys in dog subscription boxes. They all have the same basic concept – some floatable foam material with a squeaker embedded, then covered with a plush fabric. Nyx hates water so we don’t know about the floating aspect, but these are hardier than they look and so far, this one is holding up pretty well.

Yaky Puffs by Himalayan Dog Chews (2 oz) – Retail Value $5.99 (found here for $3.99)

I have seen this company’s products in a lot of dog subscription boxes in the past, though this particular item is new to me. The only ingredients here are potato starch, cheese, and potassium sorbate. Nyx is currently undergoing a slight adjustment in her medications due to some acid reflux that’s developed, but once she’s better, I am going to let her have some of these, as I don’t see any particular ingredients that I think will cause an issue. I have to say, I do like this short-ingredient-list, minimally-processed treats – it’s much easier for me to find items Nyx can actually have.

K9 Bacon Roll by Jones Natural Chews

K9 Bacon Roll by Jones Natural Chews – Retail Value $2.99

This brand shows up fairly often in RescueBox, but all their items have seemed high quality. This is just rolled up pork skin that is baked (not fried) in the USA, from USA-raised pork. These are free of preservatives but individually shrink-wrapped, so they have a decent shelf life.

Scoochzilla Puppy Popcorn – Retail Value $11.98

This is a canvas-type plush toy with some popcorn printed on it. Nyx is pretty hard on plush toys, and she did destroy this one in one session (see below), but it lasted a lot longer than I expected it to.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the popcorn toy. A few bonus Angus shots, as well.

Here is the toy after Nyx had it for awhile. I actually didn’t expect it to last as long as it did.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $36.94 for May’s RescueBox; I didn’t have to use too many values from the information card this time. That is a few dollars over the cost of the box on a month-to-month basis, which is great. I feel like this particular box was representative of the subscription as a whole as it’s been for the past few months. Nyx enjoyed the toys and the treats are from companies focusing on simple ingredients lists. Overall, I think this was a decent month.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be June.

  • Cookie $4.86
  • Pridebites toy $8.10
