Quirky Crate April 2018 Box Review
The info card for the box lists out all of the products in the box on one side, then spotlights the month's featured artist, Liz Harry, on the other.
Liz Harry Dare to Dream Rainbow Enamel Pin - Retail Value $9.95, Listed Value $10.00
I love the colors of this pin! The text is cool, too—I really like how the words almost look like they're written out in shapes rather than letters. I'm getting very into the whole rainbow moment that's been happening this spring, so this will be a fun way to bring rainbows into my neutral-toned wardrobe. The pin is 1.5" wide and has two posts on the back to help it stay flush with whatever fabric you tack it onto.
Tarte Brighter Days Highlighting Moisturizer, 0.25 fl. oz. - Estimated Value $7.22, Listed Value $10.00 (Buy a 1.69 fl. oz. version for $32.00 here)
This super lightweight moisturizer has a pop of subtle shimmer to it. It's the kind of thing that'd be a lot of fun on a day out at the beach where the sun can catch all of the itty bitty glitter. I liked how quickly it absorbed into my skin and the low-key primer-ish smoothness it gave my skin.
Quirky Girl Holographic Ice Cream Clutch - Listed Value $18.00
I am digging this metallic clutch! This 8" x 12" clutch has ample room for my (giant) phone, keys, wallet, makeup... heck, I could even shove a small paperback book in there if I wanted. There's a wrist strap for easy toting and a fuzzy ice cream cone keychain to boot. (It's removable, but... why would you want to remove it?) Super cute! I brought this bag along to a performance art event that I went to this weekend—compliments galore!
Girl Gang Patch - Listed Value $5.00
I love the iron-on patches I get from this subscription! This one is about 2.5" wide—I save most of my patches for jackets, but I'm thinking that this one might look cute as an emblem on the front of a denim shirt (right where you'd expect a breast pocket or a logo to be).
Happy Greetings Set of 3 Cards - Listed Value $13.50
How cute are these greeting cards?! I really like that they included a Mother's Day card, though I don't know that these playful rainbows are quite right for my mom. I love the rainbow pattern, though, so I think I'll keep the card and repurpose the paper for a craft (or even frame it as art). The gem card is super cute and a great all-purpose sentiment that'll work for all sorts of occasions. And the balloon dog card will be a great pick for any of my friends with summer birthdays. I really like how unique and fun these designs are. They match my personal style a lot better than cards I find at big chain greeting card shops.
YAY! Cell Phone Stand/Holder - Listed Value $10.00
Marne turned me onto these cell phone holder/stand thingamajigs a month or so ago, but I hadn't actually buckled down to buy one yet. Lucky me, this cactus one arrived before I bought one at the store! I don't think I understood just how cumbersome my phone was to hold until I had this little button on the back helping me out. It's seriously SO much more comfortable to page through Pinterest or Instagram when my fingers can rest around this gadget (rather than gripping the phone itself). You can pop it out whenever you need, or smush it down so it's flat and out of the way. Popped out, it works great as a stand, too. The 3M adhesive is no joke. It seals tight to your phone in a snap. Just take a second and plan out where you're going to stick it first. You don't want it to be in an uncomfortable position!
Flamingo Pen - Listed Value $3.00
I don't know if this pen (which really seems more like a swan than a flamingo, right?) is worth $3.00, but it sure is fun. The black ink flows smoothly and evenly from the fine metal nib and the bird (whatever breed it is...) makes the pen feel fun and flirty to write with. It looks like the plastic around the bird's neck didn't fully split from whatever mold it was in. (You can see in the photo how there's white plastic between the head and neck area.) I'm picky about those kinds of things, so I literally picked that plastic loose. It looks a little more elegant now without that extra glob of white.
Strawberry Pocky, 1.41 oz. - Retail Value $1.48, Listed Value $1.19
Ugh, Pocky is so rad. I remember first trying this treat in high school during the height of my fascination with Japanese culture. I felt SO COOL getting a literal taste of Japan through this popular snack. If you've never had Pocky, it's basically a crunchy breadstick (kind of like a milder pretzel stick minus the salt) dipped in flavored cream. The cream has a chocolate-like consistency. The matcha ones are my absolute fave, followed by the classic chocolate style. But these strawberry ones are sweet, creamy, and yummy. The cream tastes like strawberry frosting—it's not the most authentic fruit flavor, but it has all the joy and cheer of eating a strawberry-frosted cupcake. Partly because, helloooo, it's PINK!
Cactus Socks - Listed Value $7.00
Every month of this subscription, you get a new pair of super cute socks. This month, I got this cactus pair! I recently caught the plant bug and am looking forward to filling my house with plants this summer. (My office windowsill is already filling up with succulents that I am doing everything in my power not to accidentally kill...) These socks are soft and on the thinner side, so they're good for warm weather days. They're crew socks, but they don't go super high above my ankles like bulk bag crew socks often do. Of course, the things I love the most about these socks are the little green cactus shapes and their purple and periwinkle pots. Socks with sandals are in this year, right? Because I totally want to rock that look with these cuties.
Message in a Bottle Luggage Tag - Listed Value $10.00
I'm always the person grabbing those crummy paper luggage tags at the airport check-in desk and worrying whether I'll ever see my bag again once it rides the conveyor belt beyond the little flappy curtain. This luggage tag isn't just sturdier than those paper-and-string tags, but also wayyyy cuter! You fill out the tag part, then shove the "message" inside the squishy plastic bottle. The bottle then secures around your luggage handle with a sturdy, stretchy plastic loop. The only weird part is that the bottom of the bottle remains open—there's no plug or anything. But oddly, the paper seems super secure inside the open bottle—the plastic is a little clingy, so as the rolled paper expands inside the bottle, it also presses against the grippy plastic, holding it in place.
Also now I can't get this (bangin') song out of my head...
The Verdict: It's hard for me NOT to get excited when this colorful box arrives. I loved digging through the super cute finds inside this month's box. As usual, the pin was a hit with me (also HOORAY for supporting indie artists!!!), I love my new socks, and I'm already making waves with this statement-making clutch. Most of the items in the box are hard to find reliable prices for online, which always makes me take the listed values with a grain of salt. But given the cost of the box, I can assume the average value of each item is $4.09. To me, that feels fair, especially because this box is reliably a big beam of sunshine in my month. The presentation, the items inside—it's definitely a treat yourself subscription box, but if it fits your budget and your style, I feel like it's totally worth it.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order soon to get the May box! Order by the 13th of the month to get that month's box. Boxes ship of the 15th of each month.
Value Breakdown: This box cost $40.94 (price + US shipping) and has an estimated value of $85.15. That value total relies on a lot of listed values rather than ones found online, so take it with a grain of salt. Another way to look at it is that given the cost of the box, each of the 10 items has an average value of $4.09.
