Kal-Elle Fandom Monthly "Firefly/Serenity" Review

This month’s box was differently-shaped than the usual pink one, and we’ll get to the reason why in just a second. This month’s box is “Firefly/Serenity”-themed, and it looks like a great variety of items. As a pop-culture reminder, “Firefly” is the television show, and “Serenity” is the movie that came out after the show was canceled. For the sake of geeky simplicity, I’ll refer to the entity as “the series”!

The card is a really nice design; it features the Serenity along with a quote from Mal and the main line from the show’s theme song.

Firefly Poster - Estimated Value $20.00 (based on similar product)

Aha! The reason for the differently-shaped box this month. This box is long because this poster is huuuge! It measures about 19 by 13 inches, which means it would definitely make a statement on the wall! It features all nine main characters from the Firefly series, and it’s done in the watercolor-esque style that I’ve come to expect from Kal-Elle. It’s so beautifully rendered and delightfully geeky!

Serenity Magnet - Estimated Value $2.73 (based on similar product)
This piece is quite similar in spirit to the information card this month; it features artwork of Serenity taking off with the quote from the theme song.

Aim to Misbehave Necklace - Estimated Value $16.00  (based on similar product)

These bar-style necklaces are such a nice statement, and I love this spin on it with Mal Reynold’s quote “ Aim to Misbehave” with a small star. The quality on this is really nice; both the bar and the chain are pleasingly dainty without feeling like the materials are cheap. I have a friend who almost got this quote tattooed on herself, so maybe she’d be interested in some jewelry instead!

Serenity Bracelet - Estimated Value $15.00 (based on similar product)

I love that the bracelet and necklace this month go together nicely without being too matchy! This bracelet is a little sturdier than the necklace; the plate’s a little bigger and the chain is a little thicker. They still feel high-quality, though, and I like that the writing on this piece is a slight nod to the font used for the movie!

Captain Malcolm Makeup Bag - Estimated Value $15.00 (based on similar product)

I’ve received a lot of bags this size this year, but this one has got to be my favorite design of all year! I love the minimalist silhouette design of Nate Fillion’s profile, and the bag is made from sturdy cotton. It’s the perfect shape, too, for full-size items; sometimes makeup bags are a little too tailored for sample-size items, and I really like that my regular mascara tube will fit in here.

Browncoats Patch - Estimated Value $8.00 (based on similar product)

How cool is this patch? Like many of their kind, this patch appears to be iron-on, but I would be inclined to add just a couple of stitches to secure it in place. This piece is a nice nod to Mal and Zoe, and would be such a cool piece to affix to a messenger bag or a denim jacket to show that yes, you weren’t on the winning side of the war, but you were on the right side.

Kaylee Parasol Earrings - Estimated Value $12.00  (based on similar product)

These might be my favorite earrings in the ‘Verse! I love how colorful these are, just like Kaylee’s parasol. They may not shield you from the sun on Persephone, but I think they’d pop so nicely against a white cotton sundress or a solid-colored button down. That’s the greatest thing about these earrings; unless you come across another fan of the series, most people won’t even notice the significance of these!

4x6 Art Print - Estimated Value $5.05 (based on similar product)

So much great art in this box! Again we see Serenity traveling in space, in a bright watercolor rendering. The style is like other pieces I’ve received before; I really enjoy seeing the different fandoms through the same artistic lens.

Verdict: As always, these boxes deliver both in the quality of items and the high-level of fandom love! I really loved the jewelry items this month; they’re so easy to wear together for major impact, or separately for just subtle hints of fandom. The art this month was also so fantastic! The poster is the biggest I’ve seen in a Kal-Elle box, and I can’t believe how highly-valued all of the comparable items were! There is so much craftsmanship and value in this box, as well as so much love for a series that was definitely canceled too soon.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the May box. From Kal-Elle:

Boxes ship every month between the 23rd-27th.

Coupon – Save 25% off your first box with code MSA25!

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $19 + $3.75 shipping, which means that each of the 8 items in the box has an average cost of $2.84. The fact that this box is always so highly curated, and offers a wide variety of items adds value, and the items are well-designed and made.

Interesting…I got the same earrings but the metal part was yellow instead of pink.

I really want this box. I didn’t know this was the theme or I would have subbed. I already have the patch and I probably wouldn’t wear the bracelet but I want everything else 🙁

Definitely check out Kal Elle on FB and her site, Jessica! She often sells partial or full boxes when she has leftovers. 😀

Great point, Carrie! I would also follow Kal-Elle’s social media page, too, Minne – their Facebook is really active and she always mentions there if she’s selling extra boxes. ^_^
