Facet Jewelry Stringing May 2018 Box

Facet Jewelry Box is a new subscription box from the editors at Facet Jewelry and Bead & Button magazine. They offer two versions: the “Quick and Easy Stringing” box and the “Bead Stitching” box, so you can choose a subscription based on your skill level and interests, as well as the amount of time you want to invest in the projects.

This is a review of the $24.95 a month “Quick and Easy Stringing” box (both versions cost the same).

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Facet Jewelry Box Quick & Easy Stringing May 2018 Review

This is still a fairly new subscription so I really didn’t know what was in store:

The first thing you see when you open the box is this full-color booklet. I haven’t shown you all of the pages inside, because part of the subscription fee is for the projects that are included.

This is a really nice booklet, honestly, but I’d expect nothing less from the folks at Bead & Button (I’ve been a subscriber for awhile now). There are also links to online resources if you need a little help with a technique.

Dramatic Angle Earrings

The first project this month was making a pair of earrings using crystal bicones and some fancy spacers. These were pretty straightforward and easy to do. The only challenge was connecting the earring hooks – the chain was a little too dainty to put the earring hook through an individual link, so I ended up just putting the whole chain through the loop at the bottom of the earring finding. I think it worked well enough.

You need basic pliers set for this project. This one is good for a beginner (actually I still use it regularly, two years after ordering it).

Triad Bicone Bracelet

I guess bicones and spacers are the themes for this month? This one was also pretty simple to complete and I like that crimp covers were provided. (The advice in the booklet was to close the crimp covers using your crimping pliers and that worked well, although I do also have a separate pair of pliers *just* for closing crimp covers.) I made this a bit shorter than the default, but the default bracelet sizes for this subscription are around 7 inches and that would about fall off my hand. Instructions for lengthening and shortening were provided in the booklet.

You’ll need some cutters here (my Xuron shears that I usually use for Fireline worked, but good scissors probably also would) and crimping pliers.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Facet Jewelry Box. I feel that the projects definitely fit the “quick and easy” description. I thought the instructional booklet was excellent (and well-edited; I didn’t notice any errors). I like the overall finished look of both projects, as well.

I was not frustrated by either project this month (not like the bracelet from last month). Both were easy to complete and the use of bicones and spacers made them look extra nice.

I think that, in general, the people who will enjoy this version of the box the most are (1) people new to beading or (2) people who like to bead but don’t have a ton of time.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You will receive the June box. Boxes go out after the 20th and people who sign up before the 15th will get that month’s box. If you sign up after the 15th, you may still be able to get that month’s box but this is not guaranteed.

I was very frustrated by the earrings because, as you noted, the links on the chain that was provided were too small for the provided findings. This is kindof an important detail! Yes, there is a work around, but in my opinion, when paying for a kit like this, I expect the components to work together. Second, I did not choose to shorten the bracelet, and was unimpressed to find that, once again, they did not provide a single spare bead. Often you get an imperfect bead that cannot be used. Or, God forbid!, what if you dropped one?

I think they need to be a little more generous in their supplies and careful that all of the pieces work together (last month I was shorted several beads on one project and the beads didn’t fit well into the provided spacers on the other project). These kits are supposed to be about making the process simpler but I think they need to do a better job with their quality control.

Yes, in the stitching review (I think that one has posted already) I did get a silky bead with only one hole instead of two. And there was not a single extra there so one of my earrings is wonky.
